25 Essential Expressions

This is a challenge and an exercise that I find incredibly helpful when hashing out a new character. It's good to have nearby when doing your panels and you're thinking, "Damn, what does So-and-so's nose do in this expression?" Or maybe your drawing isn't consistent and you want to keep a certain look? Catalogue them on this sheet first and keep it nearby for easy reference!

I'd be more than happy to see filled out sheets in other people's devs! Let me know if you do post it cause I'd like to see it!

EDIT: Fixed typo, took away 'surprised' and replaced it with 'tired', then added 'surprised' to 'shocked'. I want to thank the forum folk at girl-wonder.org for the suggested changes!

EDIT the 2nd: WOW. This thing has taken off! I will read all your comments eventually, it'll just take me some time!

This is my latest time-killing work (I mean I spent almost 3 weeks on it)... Look out, the full view is huge )))

It was inspired by a song named "Gabriel" by Lamb. Even though the picture and the song have different meanings I felt like rendering something like this.

EDIT: Treyos finally finished writing his version of the full story! Yeeeeeey!!! And it's sooooooo wonderful, it like a second life to my painting! Thank you so much, Trey-kun!!!

The actual story behind this peace is that the girl was a "witch" who heeled people with the help of her spirits. They told her what the problem was and how to solve it or which herbs she must use to cure a person. The villagers often visited her for advice though steel fearing her powers much, but the head people and citizens of the town did not trust her and called her a "dark child". One day she saw something she never had seen before - an angel. It was the most beautiful creature she had ever laid eyes upon. She instantly felt so captivated by him she couldn't utter a word. She didn't even know if he was real or just a hallucination... He called himself Gabriel and told her that she must go to the governor and tell him that if his army will go north it'll be destroyed (the city was in state of war). And when the girl did what she was told the commanders went mad and began to threaten her, they said that they had enough information about the location of their enemies and that she just tries to lead them in the wrong direction, that she is a traitor! They did not believe her... Especially when she said that it was a message from an angel. They proclaimed her as insane and put her in irons into a cave in the woods. The situation went even worse when she told that the country will probably fall if they did not follow the advise of Gabriel!... they put out her eyes saying that she will never ever see that "angel" again!... The spirits had gone wild but couldn't do anything because they had no power in the physical world...... Time went by in hunger and coldness, and the girl started to think that she had imagined the holy creature... but then he came! And here she was, sitting on ice-cold ground, feeling the warm touch of his hands, stroking the soft and subtle feathers of his wings and thinking one thing - "He is real!" She did not care about the cold or her sudden blindness (though she craved to see him one more time); she "saw" the light he brought, the warmth he gave her... "He is real!"... But WHAT THE HELL! The story cannot end just like that! -___- So then Gabriel made her see again, took her to Heavens and they lived happily ever after! or maybe not...

Quite a few people have asked me about this now. So here is a full tutorial/documentation on how to do it, with complete instructions, including how to use multiple boxes of different sizes.

YAY.

Just... YAY.

Yes, the metallic black DID in fact turn blue in some minor areas, but other than that, HOLYCRAPILOVEHOWTHISTHINGTURNEDOUT.

This took... what, since the middle of October? Then again, I only had a few hours every two days to devote to this project, add to that the backlog of stuff to be fired (since there were 4 - 5 classes all using them)... Yeah. But just wow.

The bone sutures got eaten up by the glaze sadly, but I really like how the black and brown interacted. I'm not fond of the gas kiln for most of my stuff... but it turned out alright.

Medium: Standard Stoneware Clay
Glazes: John's Shino (under) + Metallic Black (over)

It's shrunken about 2 1/2 inches from the two firings, so it's now like... 24 inches long. That's still two feet though. XD

EDIT: I made a spiffy collage of some different detail shots I just took. Ooooooo.

Attention!
Considering the great amount of time since I have thought about emotes, never mind the neglect I've put on my emoting programs, I can no longer truly provide satisfactory advice for all you budding emoticonists. I still love to see a new emote now and then, and the comments on both my tutorials are very uplifting. However, the flood of questions must come to an end.
But, I won't just leave you in the dark. There are many resources out there in the deviantART community that can really help.
Be sure to check out #Emotication for other tutorials and a long list of resources for all aspects of emoticon creation. If you need a mentor, they have a program set up to give you the kind of help you need.
If you have a specific question about emoticons or emoticon creation (including animation), head over to #WeEmote. The group there are sure to have an answer for you, or at least point you in the right direction.

And of course, dA has a massive section on tutorials for some of the most popular programs (as well as general tutorials) that can be easily found in the Resources and Stock Images > Tutorials gallery.

If you comment or send me a note, please don't be offended if I direct you elsewhere. I really can't provide you with the help you deserve.

Well, seeing as how I had a tutorial for GIMP emoticon animations, I figured I'd make an actual emoticon tutorial.
This is a beginners tutorial, and the likelihood of me teaching more complicated colouring styles, how to colour and how not to colour, and things like that is fairly minimal. Be happy with what you have, people.

(Oh, and this one has a prettier layout than the last one. )

The tutorial covers programs, outlines, two colouring styles, and hands. And again, this is just a simple tutorial. Build off and learn from it; I recommend any new emoticonist that REALLY feels comfortable with the above two colouring styles to try their own; make more complicated symbols and gradually make your way to something unique to yourself.

And if you make an emote with the help of this tutorial, don't be afraid to show and tell. :D I'd love to see 'em. ^__^

I supposse we could say this is like a twisted version of the Frog Prince tale, or something like that . I have the sketch of this one done since last year, but couldn't work on it because of the lack of time. So when I was able to work on it again, I spent most time than usual, trying to have all the fun possible .

A project well over a year in planning, finished.

The Stone:
The Spinel shows a nice range of color from light red to very deep, blood red. Cynthia chose this stone specifically for it's high degree of extinction, which enhances the blood-pool effect of the deep red reflections. When worn it tends to only show the deep reds in one side of the stone at a time.

The Ring:
The prongs are meant to resemble teeth or claws, and the shank texture is an abstracted scale pattern.

This is my first lost-wax piece. A local jeweler taught me how to carve wax and create prongs for this project. A local casting professional did the actual cast. Meeting these people through this project has taught me a lot and opened up many doors.

We have a rubber mould to make another if we please, but sometimes it's more fun to fight over who gets to wear it.

In Greek mythology, Thanatos (in Ancient Greek, θάνατος "Death") was the Daemon personification of Death and Mortality. He was a minor figure in Greek mythology, often referred to but rarely appearing in person. His name is transliterated in Latin as Thanatus, but his Roman equivalent was Mors or Letus/Letum, and he was sometimes identified (perhaps erroneously) with Orcus.

The Golden One dazzles all who behold her. Her form is uncertain and flows with her shimmering robes. Her memory will not tarnish in the eyes of those she meets fleetingly but she holds a secret no one knows, for no one can see her true form.
....

She is roughly related to my online comic [link] in a way that probably only I understand. It's just a character design I wanted to work out, which was getting nowhere in sketches. She's not an elf, or an angel and not quite a fairy. The dragon was just for fun and the background is inspired by Chinese paintings.

Long time overdue commission for ~Litwolf689 She wanted a dragon sticking its head out of the water, startling a heron standing on the shore: ) I had fun with this pic although that these hills and stones were a bit boring. Anyway I finally tried my Prismas properly and I am really satisfied with them : ) Hope you Litwolf like it and thx again for our SD business!

A ) You DO NOT have to use just a fandom. I will not shoot you for using more than one character, or if you mix fandom with your original characters. For all I care you can make up a different character for each song.

Q ) Do I have to use iTunes?
A ) You DO NOT have to use iTunes. Heck the radio is fine. You can even ask your annoying neighbor to play their trombone.

Q ) Do I have to use a tablet/computer?
A ) No you DO NOT. You don't even have to use this template either. Do it however you want; be innovative. All my friends did it with a pen and paper.

Q ) I can't save the picture! It comes up as a blank image, what do I do?
A ) Buy a new computer. Or just pretend the picture is there. Heck, why not make your own template and have fun! I promise not to beat you because *gasp* you didn't use my image. There are a lot of people on DA who aren't using it; be creative.

Q ) Its too big to print! Make it smaller!
A ) No.

Q ) This is a great idea! / I'm gonna do this later.
A ) Uh, thanks. / That's nice.

A ) No thank you. I prefer to search "music meme" at the top. I think its fun to be surprised by searching.

(2008) 2"x 2.5" for each of the pendants including the bail.

Art Clay Silver (cut, sculpted, fired and patinaed), 10 mm gemstone cabs (onyx, amethyst, chalcedony, moonstone, Aventurine, carnelian, amber), bezel wire, silver wire, bail findings.

And here is the whole set in the traditional arrangement for the original planets (before Neptune and Uranus were discovered and before anyone even thought of fighting about the status of Pluto)

From the top clockwise:
Saturn - onyx
Jupiter - amethyst
Venus - chalcedony (pearl is more traditional)
Moon - moonstone
Mercury - aventurine
Mars - carnelian
Sun - amber

The markings on each of the planetary seals are taken from The Key of Solomon.

So yeah... I was making a WEBCAM picture for my front page here on dA. As I got along... I just shook my head and said: "Daniel... there's no way this is going to work out as a gif animation...", So I decided to just make it into an actual flash mini cartoon.

We see Ally and San, as Ally is playing some Pop'n Music (for those of you who don't know, or recognize the Pop'n Controller she's bashing.) Fully concentrated in her game, San think up random ways to amuse himself...
You think she'll notice? :0

Now, I know what most of you are thinking after watching this.... 'no sound', and yes, I don't have a massive arsenal of Sound Effects, but I'm hoping to invest in the grand package of cartoon sound effect collection, some day. :3

I didn't feel like adding a bunch of miscellaneous sounds, scruffled up from the net, by people who stick mics up to their TV speakers, while watching Loonytunes. >_> Further more, I was running out of time... for you see, today is...

Many of you will be rather enigmated by the rather "acidic" scene... I just felt like adding it in there because of Ally's motion with her arms; it reminded me of this.... awesome WEIRD flash, that I saw long, long ago... that had like a white cat, and a big yellow... elk?.. reindeer? and they were doing something weird like that, to a flashing, seizure-causing background, to some crazy Japanese techno or so. o_o; Nothing more to explain there. xD;

An assassin of the night. As she runs by the brightness of the moon, her ribbons fly out behind her, as if she had wings. Thus they named this unknown one of the darkness, ironically, as the "White Butterfly"

This is the picture I was talking about, went through so many changes its ridiculous, doesn't look at all like the first version, it's like 2 different drawings. Oh well..

This is the wind spirit calming this girl with her soothing touch.
