Ugh, this took me SUCH a long time D'':
Colouring was just a mission
The amount of neckache I had to endure because of this..

So anyway, yeah, I haven't spent much time on any art lately, so I decided to really push myself with this and try different coouring techniques

Although admittingly I did copy and paste the background for panels 2, 3 and 4.. but come on- the characters hardly change position, there was no point repainting it >8P

All lineart was done by tablet, which was also a time-consumer.

--- but yeah, on a more positive note- I love drawing these guys D: they're fun to draw together because they're practically complete opposites.

Solar Plate Print- Vivi

Hey Y'all! Just wanting to show what I am doing a bit in school right now.

This is a solar plate print for my printmaking class. [link]
Our teacher said we should try to use a photograph or some other digital image for our first try at solar plate, so I picked my Vivi image [link] since I knew it would have a good range of deep blacks and clear whites.

I also have two zinc litho prints I am working on, but they won't be done for another week or two, so you'll just have to wait!

Anyway, this is 5x7, on BFK Reeves and inked with intaglio ink.

PS. Sorry for the little bit of crookedness and blurriness in areas. The paper is slightly larger than my scanner @___@

Fable 3 Poster, Remember...

Cheating backgrounds and Props

I know its very anti-art of me to prevent people from practicing their own backgrounds. But then again, there are 3d modules that are used professionally in comics and manga. And to speak on behalf of webcomic artists, I'm sure as hell not going to draw going to draw a FedEx truck over...and over...and over again... (the process does get time consuming!)

Allow me to answer a few of your questions regarding my process. Every painting begins with several thumbnail sketches to work out the general composition. I take the best one and make a larger drawing of about 8 or so then check the composition with the principals of Dynamic Symmetry.

I then look for photographic reference from my picture morgue for clouds and such. Then I shoot other required elements like rocks on glass if I need the reflection too. Then I take all these image elements into PhotoShop and create a final composite reference image mostly in black and white.

The next step is to make several pastel studies to decide on the color harmony. The process up to this point is very similar to how Maxfield Parrish developed his work. Once all this preparation is complete I execute the painting using traditional methods.

If it is painted in acrylics it requires many, many layers taking up to 5 times the effort than oil paint. This is why Im now only painting with oils. The process is similar though; you start with blocking the entire image with the darks to midtones. I work from dark to light not necessarily from background to foreground. Once the thing is blocked, you are working with finishing areas or middle stuff. I generally add the lightest passages later in the process especially misty or haloing effects.

My palette consists of, Ultramarine Blue, Phthalo Blue, Cadmium Red Medium, Permanent Rose or Quinacridone Red, Hansa Yellow Medium or Windsor Yellow, Titanium White, and Ivory Black. For acrylics I use only water as a medium. For oils I use Neo Megilp by Gamblin. I do not use or recommend turpentine or mineral spirits for oil painting. If you learn to use a brush properly, you can just wipe your brush between colors with little to no contamination.

Once the painting is finished and dry, I always varnish them with appropriate varnish.

For the moment, if you'd like to know, most of my watercolor technique is based on the teachings of Lian Zhen ( [link] <-- his page here), who is a -huge- inspiration to me. I can only hope to be as skilled as he is one day... He has published a number of books, I recommend them highly.

Also, you can credit for introducing me to Doctor PH Martin's Pen White ink, which is what I used to do the highlights/white lines on this picture.

So this is another of my final paintings for my degree show. I know the head looks hideously enormous, but I promise you it's in proportion. It was a weird photo - my hands are massive too. EDIT I just worked out that the shadows make the body look smaller than it physically is - look on the bottom right and you can see where the body is and it suddenly looks right. I feel better now!

Acrylic on unprimed canvas 4'x6' (ie massive!) Less dripping than normal as this one was painted much more quickly than normally - about 20 hours over a week.

Here is a vector of my friend Stuart~ It's been a few years since I've made a vector and I thought I could make one better than before. I looked at making this the same way I would use color pencils in a traditional piece... having the skin shaded using purple-red hues instead of gray-toning the original hue like I used to.

The time I spent on this is about the same amount of time it takes for me to draw a color pencil piece! I really like how this piece came out and Stuart likes it too. I hope you guys like it as well~
