Anyway: Finally done with this! Sorry for being mostly silent over the last week or so, but I've been focusing on finishing this, among other things. I have rather come to the conclusion that so long as Karbo keeps extending a deadline, I'll keep procrastinating/expanding so that I finish just in time. I intended this to be a short, silly, self-indulgently vorish story . . . I suppose I got at 2 out of 3 right.

I'm really not sure how good this one came out overall though. It's pretty much my most lengthy story to date, and while there are a number of sections I'm very pleased with, I'm not quite sure how well it all comes together. I think I ended up developing Becky's quartermaster a lot more than the mermaid herself, and I couldn't resist bringing in one of my previous characters as a sort of means by which to perceive the wackiness . . . but that's just the way the neko bounces I guess.

In any case, this was a ton of fun, but now I'm going to take a long overdue break from writing for a little while, and perhaps catch up on my reading, check out some of the other Becky entries, etc.

The morning hours of Halcandria tended to be the louder hours. It was when crewmen hobbled out of their ships or stumbled from out of the pubs to prepare themselves for the voyage ahead. But as far as John, Becky and Raun were concerned, time was meaningless. They had all spent the entire night swapping stories and telling tales about what had happened in their lives, how each other met, and what had happened after that fateful night.
John was wrapping up one of his stories with, "…and from then on I was on my own. And that's how I ended up going to the Salty Anchor down the coast."

The sailors readying their ships weren't swarming the docks, making Fangbeard and Raun's search easier, but with no more luck. They trailed up and down every pier they could find but still couldn't find what they were looking for. As Fangbeard searched about desperately for any signs of Becky, Raun was still entranced by the tale of the mermaid ship.
"So, you actually sailed about ON a mermaid," he asked. "That's really nuts. I wouldn't think any mermaid would even subject herself to that kind of thing." Fangbeard s ]]>

The call of the gulls and the murmur of the sea had woken Fangbeard. As his eyes opened, he was blinded by the intense light the sun was giving off. It shone brightly as it climbed over the horizon to start a new day. Fangbeard's eyes now adjusted to the light and he found himself on the docks somehow. He was incredibly confused as he looked about his surroundings, when he found the orange mermaid leaning her back on one of the piers. She looked at him with a small, gentle smile and Fangbeard came to the realization.
"I'm dreaming."

"Aye lad," Fangbeard answered, "it is. Perhaps I can find what I'm lookin' fer there." It barely a few seconds after Fangbeard said this when Raun piped in with a question.

Fangbeard stood at the edge of the sand of the Torpaline Coast. The water glimmered gold as the sun was setting. The water's calm surface was broken softly by a large figure. He stared in awe as it was a mermaid. She sported orange hair, vibrant blue eyes, a few pirate tattoos and some scars on her right arm. Her tail fin lifted from the water to reveal gilded scales that shone brightly in the sun's light. Fangbeard could only look at her with a longing face. She noticed his slight grief and asked him.

Nights along the Torpaline Coast have always been cold. The night was clear of clouds so the stars and moon could shine their dull, brilliant light over the sand. Fangbeard appreciated nights like this out on ships, but from the shoreline it had a sort of magical feel about it. He looked off into the distance and saw some of the arthronodes sending off their electrical charges. It was like watching lights come alive; it was something he'd never seen before and looked at it in awe. Fangbeard sighed, knowing he had no time to sight see; he had plenty of coastline to cover. Halcandria was still a day or two away.

The wind was blowing, the sea was calm and the sand was warm. As Captain Fangbeard walked out onto the beach he breathed deep the smell of the ocean.  The birds were cawing through the clear blue skies of the Torpaline Coast. Indeed, it was a huge contrast to the storm last night.  Fangbeard looked ahead toward the northern part of the coast and realized that he had a long walk ahead of him.  It could take a couple days or so just to walk to Halcandria Port.  At the very least it was a good day to walk. Without a crew, supplies or a boat for that matter, he inhaled the sea air again and proceeded to walk north.

The vastness of the Topazial sea, to the uninitiated, might have appeared monotonous, an unchanging expanse of bright, mostly calm water, reflecting the sunlight. A deep blue surface, mirroring the paler, clear blue sky. It was flat, unbroken, unmarked by any feature that might have guided a lost traveller. By contrast with the rich, diverse sceneries of dry land, it appeared to be a an emptiness, a liquid desert, a maze without walls.

The sun sets over the horizon, coating the sky in stars, the pirates reach shallow waters filled with jagged rocks jutting out of the water keeping any usual ship from passing. Becky slows to a hault, the sea eye bumps into her butt sending her forward a bit. Thinking quickly Becky grabs the ground so she won't crash into one of the rocks. Stran waves back at the men on the sea eye and they wave back,the men drop anchor then gather on becky's  deck.

"Okay crew this is where we say goodbye to the creaking tub over there and take all her bounty!" The deep blue seas of Felarya shimmer in the light of the midday sun, a trade ship cruises along  the vast waters along it's usual route the belly filled with treasure that is to be delivered to a large city on the northern continent. The crew is relaxing on the deck. Some playing instruments, others drinking gords of various alcoholic drinks, the captain, an old man with a large bushy beard and an eye as white as snow dances with a fair looking young blonde woman. A man resting in the crow nest looks through a telescope at the horizon notices an object approaching.

Where do I start? From the beginning I suppose...
The tavern was dark, and foreboding, the floored filled with pirates both drunk and on there way to it. Among the throng were flashes of scarves in ruby reds and vibrant oranges and deep sea blues, all to denote a specific crew, but looking like wild medley of circus performers. They made the tavern even harder to navigate. It was already dim, the only light from lanterns strewn along the walls, their flames dwindled to nothing but blue sparks, like a field of will-o-wisps to light the room. This is my second entry into Karbo's and zalzas's portal/felarya contest

I had a couple ideas I wanted to do with this, becouse one of the first things i thought of when i read about the contest was the borealis being there. Its said that it teleported out of its dock and was never seen from again. well, at least untill episode 2. Its fun to think of where it might of gone before it landed back on earth.

My eraser is also MIA at the moment so i didnt want to add to much detail or shading. I'm just assuming that it got raptured. That was one damn good eraser. ]]>

So in the actual description of the contest, Karbo said something about the possibilities of characters from felarya dressing up as characters from portal. Well, I also skimmed the word companion cube, and, since my brain is wired all funny like, I got the idea of Crisis dressed up as a companion cube. I actually think it fits very well since Crisis can be a little ditzy or silly sometimes, and the companion cube comes off as goofy as well. So yeah, did the math, this is the result.

I hope to complete a digital version of this too, and if/when I do, then I will update this deviation with it. Ciao! ]]>

So I happened to look over at the calender and realized the deadline was in two days x.x This weekend was spent finishing and finalizing this to its completion before this week started-- even if would accept it later, I would have absolutely no time to work on it, as any and all of my spare time would HAVE to be spent on commissions

I realized why I love coloring contests so much; coming in such close proximity with someone else' lineart is, in my opinion, a very intimate experience. If you look hard enough, you get to know the artist's personality and style, and through that encounter, you gain slivers of wisdom you would have to work for much longer to earn on your own.

In this case, with this being my 2nd "Karbo" contest, I used this opportunity to see just how much I had grown stylistically compared to the contest I entered almost 2 years ago [link]

I feel that both and I had grown quite a bit since that last contest

Since Demi-chimera's are so BAMF, they wouldn't need to blend in with their environment...at all. So~ red on blue is purty to me I guess I also tried to correspond the feel and environment of this piece to my first contest entry. Wheee~

omg my eyes hurrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrt.

Actually happy how this turned out which isnt normal lol. Learned alot from coloring karbos lines. I felt with detailed lineart I had better control on what brush strokes I should be useing and where to place them. I'll have to step up my game with my lineart in the future.

Improved a bit on drawing grass, its starting to enter my comfort zone, yeaaaa all those grass strands where individual brush strokes >__>........

This biggest thing im happy about is that it took me 3 days not even to color it. Thats a big improvment for me, I useally color so sloooooooooooooooow.

I went with a colorful enviroment to compliment the Chimera. I firmly beleive that illustrateing a character in a enviroment, the enviroment should compliment the character, and the character should compliment the enviroment.

WIP for anyone curious how I plan out my lights and shadows.
