Dominace War Final Pose

Like I said, this year I decided to do the final pose in a different style, this been a style that I've been doing a lot for work and never really been used for and public work. I know most of you probably perfer the painted look, I just got a little tired of the painted look all the time and want to a somewhat cellcut style.

Anyways, this is 80% done for the final pose, I'll be adding moore detail design to the arm maybe and bg,etc. Just don't want to make it too busy.

Also added the tiny sword at the demon arm that's left from the dead hero which was used to seal the demon so the arm can never be reattached to the great demon,etc.
Just something small that I thought was fun~

Anyways I'll be working on the 3view ortho sheet first before coming back to this piece.

Any comment are always welcome, I do like to hear what people think of this style of coloring, it'll most likely cost me since i don't think any of the top 100 DW last year was cellshaded so ya... but still it was really fun! Thanks again everyone!

I was having a hard time deciding between the one dragging the arm from behind, and the mid right design from last batch of sketches (link)

Thanks for everyone's feedback, I really took it into consideration when deciding >.<

The arm dragging one would be fun but this sihoulette seems to work better for me and in terms of the overall design how it'd work attacking,etc. I decided to still go with this direction, made more changes and detail to push the design to be a tad unique hopefully.

Any feedback and crit and ideas to push this even crazier or unique would be great!

This was made for CGSociety's "Strange Behaviour" Challenge. The story goes: In vertical oriental cities, gas-filled floating fish are commonly used for cargo transport. Being very docile creatures, they normally create no fuss. They glide slowly though the crowded markets, letting themselves be steered by their drivers to their docking stations deep within the city. But then once in a while a fish panics in the narrow passages and tries to get away, shaking off the little people climbing all over it and tearing down wooden bridges and market stands. Such behaviour is considered unacceptable and most strange. This painting depicts one such event.

Another 'sketch' for the gentleman who waited too many years for it, so he got the top-shelf treatment. On a strange note, it felt weird to do a Power Girl drawing and NOT have it be silly or goofy. I wonder why Power Girl and Batgirl strike me as characters best suited for humor?

The automata proved to be a very effective deterrent to intruders.

I was asked to create a magical warmachine armed with a range of weaponry which is also decoratively gilded. I had fun trying to create something 'alien' lookig, but also possessing character.

I tried to keep focus with the lighting on the machine being focused around the 'head' and receding into deep shadow as it moves down the body. The figure is also the highest contrast area possessing the strongest lights and darks. Alternately the background is less well defined and the values are concentrated in the mid/light range.

Im having real hard trouble to get a nice video capture software, Some process in the video got lost, if some one knows a cool software for video capture, and codecs and settings that support around 1400 x 900, it will be a lot of help for future videos. cause my videos ends like 4 gigs and most of the time crashes. Any help its welcome.

Here's a rare excursion into REAL PAINT. Hands inside the vehicle, children - we're in the wild country.

This was done as a Christmas gift for a friend, who loves this era and the James Bond of that period specifically.

Done on illustration board with acrylic paints. All kinds. Liquitex, Holbein, anything I had laying around that wasn't drier than a pharaoh's tomb.

I think I went with the blue & orange complimentary color theory on this one simply because they were the paints that were still wet enough to use. Seriously.

Yeah, this is the color version. I´ve chosen same color for a more simply comparison between the two types of Space marine. The high-tech armored Terran, and the genetically modified superhuman from Imperium. It seems that Terran marine have just shot all their amunition and Ultramarine sergeant is about to do same...

So, the Big Debate can be ended; someone slapped a label on the silly thing. I apologoze for not reading DA's article defining mature content as regards to items posted on their site.

Since the Mature Label has been placed firmly on this dangerous piece of propaganda, and therefore cancers have been cured, poverty ended, and terrorism defeated in our lifetime, I think we can all MOVE ON.

Just an update of one of the projects I did. This is some of the illustrations I did for Web&Circus called FurTrade.
There’s even a audiobook for the scripts I did for this, and it was pretty fun to listen as I illustrate them out.

The Chinese boy and girl’s name is Vo and Li, they’re characters in the comic called Zoovolution which Jack Lawrence is the main artist doing the interiors.
He did the concepts too for the characters.

Zoovolution is also an 2d MMO game

Nite Owl for WATCHMEN Film

Since the ART OF WATCHMEN book has come out, I feel comfortable posting the art I did for the 8 minutes I worked on the film...

First, the back story. I was contacted by representatives of 300 director Zack Snyder, while 300 was in postproduction, about doing designs for 4 of the 6 main characters from WATCHMEN. Zack wanted me to design the look of the characters, and then do 4 'cover-quality' color illustrations to hep convince the suits & ties at Warner Bros. Pictures to green-light his WATCHMEN film.

I did a first round of sketches, talked with Mr. Snyder, did a second round of looser sketches based on our discussions, and then was given the go-ahead to proceed with designing full illustrations. Since I was running late on CATWOMAN covers as well as other things, I was juggling the assignments. Since I do art for whomever yells the loudest, the WATCHMEN stuff took a minor backburner placing on my To Do List. I never heard from them, they never called or e-mailed saying "Hey, hurry up, you bastard!", so I worked on Selina Kyle.

Then, 300 came out.

It did so well in its opening weekend, Warner Bros. green-lit WATCHMEN the following Monday.

I guess my services weren't required, because I never heard back from the WATCHMEN people. I could've finished the color pieces on principle, like a good freelancer, but I'm so slow that my time is kinda precious, and I don't want to waste time drawing something that isn't going to be used. So, I just chalked it up to "That's business...".

The WATCHMEN people contacted me much later, asking for high-rez versions of the sketches for the inevitable ART OF book. I pointed out that, since I never actually did the assignment I was asked to do, I had never been paid. To their credit, once we agreed on a rate for just the sketches, they check arrived so fast, the envelope was warm, the ink was still wet, and the FedEx guy was out of breath. The WATCHMEN movie guys are a pretty respectable gang, as far as my experience goes.

*****Nite Owl*****

Zack Snyder told me he wanted a BATMAN movie approach to Nite Owl's look; the body-armor with believable tech and all that. No problem.

Now, I think WATCHMEN is one of the greatest novels ever written, and it'd Dave Gibbons' finest work in a brilliant career. I was actually working in a comic shop in New Jersey when the original issues were coming out, and I was there, reading every one as they came out. Dave's storytelling, his design work, EVERYTHING about WATCHMEN was, and remains, brilliant.

I wanted to give Zach what he asked for, but I wanted to honor Dave Gibbons' designs as well. I know that comics (like books and anything else) cannot be translated VERBATUM to the Big Screen, but I am not a big fan of the X-MEN/GI JOE approach, where the original look of the characters is almost ignored for the sake of not alienating the non-fan audience, and you end up with black leather jumpsuits and you almost need name tags on the chests to recognize characters. "Hello, My Name Is Wolverine".

I thought that no matter what details Nite Owl's costume had, as long as he kept Gibbons' 'owl silhouette', it would be a good design. Since the reason movie studios don't like superheros in tights (with the exception of Spider-Man and Superman, my 'never worked in Hollywood' first design (on the left) was a moody shot. If we don't show the general audience the 'silly superhero' by cloaking him in shadow (the way I figure guys like Nite Owl and Batman would prefer to operate), then everyone wins. Zack liked it, but rightly asked for a sketch showing details. Hence, the second looser sketch.

When I saw the first WATCHMEN trailer in front of DARK KNIGHT, I was tickled to see some of my suggestions surviving to the Big Screen. With Nite Owl, they seem to have kept my idea of Captain America-style scale mail, but elongated to look like bird feathers. Other than that, they took the design in a different direction.

I always go into a film with an open mind; I didn't care for the look of Heath Ledger's Joker in DARK KNIGHT, but once I saw it in the context of the film, I fell in love with it. I hope that's the case with Nite Owl, who is my favorite charatcer from the novel; I agree with his stance that it's OK to compromise your morals if it serves a greater good.

That being said, I really DON'T like how Nite Owl's costume looks in the film. They seem to have abandoned Dave Gibbon's wonderful design for what a pal of mine refers to as the 'Sad Batman' look. The type of owl that Nite Owl's mask is supposed to look like makes him look like he has Batman ears that are sad & droopy.

I look forward to having my opinion changed on March 6th!

*****Silk Spectre*****

When director Zack Snyder spoke about Silk Spectre, he confessed she was the one character he was really unsure of how to tackle, costume-wise. In the comics, she is pretty much wearing black lingerie covered in a gossamer camisole; he felt that was not gonna work onscreen.

I think he must've been relieved when I blurted out "Dude! Do her outfit in latex! You can make it have the same lines as her comic outfit, but it'll look cool onscreen and all the cosplayers will go nuts; it'll be a big fan-favorite!" When I saw the WATCHMEN trailer in front of DARK KNIGHT, and saw Silk Spectre in latex, I almost turned to the stranger next to me and bragged "That was my idea! Eeee!" Yes, I am functionally retarded.

OK, first sketch, on the left. Pretty basic. It matches Gibbons' design relatively closely, I think. I imagined it as a chin-to-toe full latex suit; that way the actress and stuntwomen would have some protection while kicking alternate 1986 ass. I even thought the gossamer cammy would work. Zack liked it, but wanted her to have a domino mask. Bless his zombies-that-run-fast heart, he wanted to make sure the Watchmen looked like damn superheroes. The second sketch reflects that, plus his request that she have some weapons. I thought those telescoping truncheons would fit the bill.

From what I've seen, the screen version doesn't have a mask, and shouldn't! The actress in the costume looks so PERFECT, they nailed it. Silk Spectre (both 1940s and 1980s versions) should have a fetich quality to the look, and what I see onscreen NAILS IT. I can't wait.

LEAGUE is one of my all-time favorite comics, made into one of the all-time worst film adaptations ever. If you've only seen the film PLEASE read the comic, available in trade paperback form. I beg you.

Catwoman 79

OK, let's call this Rough Sunday. I'm going to post a few peices that are not as polished as my regular work; they fall somewhere in between finished work and con sketches.

Catwoman 79. This is about as rough as it gets. Because of scheduling problems (meaning: I was behind on everything), I didn't have time to do this cover. So, I colored my prelim and handed it in. Thinking it intentional, everyone at DC liked my 'rougher approach'. Yikes.

This prelim was done on animation paper with Pitt pens, and then scanned and colored in Photoshop (where all the lettering was slapped together).

I really wanted to go all-out on this one, but wasn't able to. Looking at it now, it does have a nice rough quality that my admittedly anal work us missing. Maybe someday I'll grow some balls and do more work like this.

I loved the concept they let me go for on this. Selina returns to Gotham from a long adventure abroad (i.e. outer space) and is overjoyed to be home, in a "THAT'S ENTERTAINMENT!" musical number kind of way. But since she's back in Gotham City, the worst city in the world, it's chock full of your daily FDA dose of irony.

Power Girl Issue 2 Cover

This is my second POWER GIRL cover. As with the first one, these are variants; the book is actually being drawn by Amanda Conner and she rightfully gets the main cover.

This is one of those exercises in creativity to get the job done. The end of February was a tad nightmarish; being the shortest month of the year, I was closing on a house, and I had MegaCon to head off to the day after closing.

I needed to hand in a Power Girl cover before I left, and I needed it to look decent. There wasn't time for anything elaborate or full of backgrounds. One option is to do a rougher cover like the one I did for CATWOMAN 79. Looser inks, less rendering, but still throwing in a background full of details.

The other option is: do something designy and graphic. All I had time for was a nice shot of her standing there, so I thought it'd be eye-catching of the parts of her that are lit by direct lighting are kind of washed out, but she is standing in the shade of her own logo. My art director kinda liked the idea, so the end was result this quickie.

One of my recent work for my portfolio.
Both of this characters are some of my favorite ones from Marvel.
I always felt that Gambit had the coolest design including his abilities though not everyone think so. Blowing up probably anything with his kinetic powers that alone i thought was so cool.

Infamous Mary Jane litho/print for Sideshow Collectibles. A fun drawing, a cute idea, all kinda ruined by some people who don't have the ability to see anything that exists outside their agendas.

Much fuss made about Mary Jane doing Spider-Man's laundry, to which I respond with: who the hell does laundry in a basket on a table? Even if they are so poor that they don't own their own washing machine, you'd hand-wash clothes in the SINK. Maybe she's not doing his laundry.... maybe this is about that classic couple moment when someone finds out their partner's dirty little secret in the wash? Maybe THAT makes mroe sense?

Also: I'm much funnier than that. If I was ACTUALLY going to do a statue/print about Mary Jane doing Spider-Man's laundry, it would be a HELL of a lot funnier. Washboard, do-rag, apron..... Mary Jane would've had a really dirty look on her face that said "You bastard... I better get breakfast in bed for this!!!"

Bottom line: look at my other 20+ years of work. Yes, i darw overly sexy women. But they are all powerful women in control of their own lives. Why would I become a mysogynist overnight, do this peice, and then go back to my previous behavior?

I wish people would redirect their anger & energies in productive ways.

Rargh.
