The Jōmon were inhabitants of prehistoric Japan. They, along with the Ainu people, are debated to be the ancestors of modern Japanese people. (If that makes sense.)

This was pretty challenging. I should have separated the colors of her clothes on different layers, but I didn't.
It made shading really difficult. She's standing pretty awkwardly too.

New Beginnings

"New Beginnings" -- line art in pen on paper, free-hand digital color in Corel Painter on Intuos 3 tablet.

"New Beginnings" was the prompt/theme given for October 2012 to the member artists of the Enchanted Visions Project. We've been on a summer hiatus since June (May?), and this is the first theme as we resume regular activity. It's perfect to have "New Beginnings" as the first theme since we are getting a brand new web site with lots of new things implemented.

For my piece, I brainstormed a little bit on the theme (It only took me minutes to come up with the idea... for a change!), and decided to do a wedding-related piece since weddings are life's major new beginnings for many of us. I meddle in feng shui as a hobby, and I like putting the celestial creatures of good fortune in my paintings (like my "Dragon Lore"), and since the traditional headdress for the Chinese brides are so ornate and gorgeous, I decided to put a bride and a phoenix together. The phoenix is often seen paired with a dragon in Chinese wedding decor since these celestial beings are used to represent the bride and the groom and all the good luck and fortune they can bring to their marriage. They are as ubiquitous as the red and gold color scheme.

In my interpretation of "New Beginnings", a new bride is receiving the blessings of a celestial phoenix on her wedding day. I had fun with the headdress. I really love the red and gold -- I was in great mood as I painted this piece over 3 days. ^^

Just after I woke up in this most beautiful place, many miles into a remote region of Washington's North Cascades. I'd been dropped off by boat and backpacked for 8 days. It was such a wonderful experience. This is Whatcom peak with clouds streaking overhead, the result of a 40-second exposure and the direction of the clouds themselves.

Removing the Thorn came to me in a dream in 2008 when I began to journal about the path of life. In the dream, a white haired man came to my door. Wanting to buy my house on the spot, he handed me a handful of cash. As I invited him inside I explained to him that I was only renting. I offered to show him a map of the area but he didn’t seem too interested. I looked for one anyway while he sat at my dining room table. When I returned with the map, this painting is what I saw sitting in front of him as though he had just painted it. I was drawn in by the unconventional Jesus whose Lordship is not the clipping of claws as we might fear, but rather the digging out of our deepest hindrances so that the lion within us can be liberated. The symbolism of the peacock that emerges from the lion’s chest represents the beauty that comes after we surrender our brokenness to the healer rather than trying to conceal our limp.

Yuki-onna is a legendary demon/ghost from Japanese mythology. She kills unwary travelers by freezing them to death.

The white kimono with silver flecks is a vintage odori (dance) piece. The obi, underkimono and sheer overkimono were made by me. It's hard to see in this picture but the overkimono has snowflakes hand-embroidered all over it.

It celebrates the meeting of Orihime (Vega) and Hikoboshi (Altair), which live on the different banks of Amanogava (Milky Way, lit. We shouldn't blame ourselves for bad things that happened to us. Sometimes, no matter what we do, we are victims of the circumstances. We should just have to pull ourselves out.

Kenshin, Kaoru, Yahiko and Sano managed to fight their way through the tribulations that bound them, and found purpose and a different kind of strength through each other.

For this group shot, we tried to visually depict their relationships. I chose to unsheathe a part of the reverse-edged blade to show how Kenshin vowed to protect the innocent and the people who are important to him, without resorting to killing. Miguel propped his arm on my shoulder to represent how Sano is Kenshin's trusted friend and self-appointed partner _{(in fighting, you silly Yaoi Enforcers)}. Yahiko stands close by, eager to learn from the man who acknowledged his strength when no one else did, and helped him grow. Kaoru stays by Kenshin's side, to literally portray how she stands by him and never loses faith regardless of the circumstances.

Asaragi: Morning mist

a contest piece for the club.

originally i was going to make kanzashi but it would take me so long.

So instead i made this. i really didn't know how to make a morning mist type scene... so i used alot of references to help me out. all of the cranes and flowers are hand drawn and colored in PS. the moon/sun and clouds i had made digitally myself. while the only actual thing in there i did not use were the green flower patterns on the sleeves and the tiny random pink sakura. those are actually bushes i used. but the majority of it all i had created myself with references to help. one reference you can directly see in my kanzashi gallery...it is the pink kimono fabric.

Here, when i first through of morning mist i had the idea of cranes doing their mating dance and flying. since i see alot of crane motifs on kimonos i thought it would have been a good idea. you see two cranes dancing atop water while two are flying off in the distance.

A fantastic storm approaches the Pic du Midi d'Ossau in the French Pyrenees, one of the top climbing peaks in Europe. A really memorable day which highlighted just how unpredictable mountain weather can be.

One of my favourite places in the world to climb, so many good routes and memories.

Junihitoe is a kind of formal kimono developed in Heian era. I fall in love with it since the first time i see it from manga(for example Genji Monogatari).

I finally got to try it on in Kyoto^_^ The set i was wearing has 9 layers of beatiful clothes, weight totally around 15kilos(YES IT'S VERY HEAVY!) I used photoshop to change the background becz the original photo taking place wasn't very nice. Hope you like the effect~

For Hina Matsuri, I went to Shimogamo Shrine in Kyoto to see the Hina Dolls and this Junihitoe presentation. The Junihitoe (also called Karaginu mo) is the clothing of the nobility of the Heian Period (794-1185). Seeing as I could go on and on about Heian Period garb, I'll just reccomend a site for those who might only be casually interested, [link] .

She was constantly referred to as 'Hime-Sama', or princess. I'm not sure, but I think she won some sort of competition for her role. She later presented offerings to the Sacred River in Shimogamo Shrine along with some dignitaries.

One of the leading writers of the Heian Period, Sei Shonagon was well known for also having something of a rivalry with Murasaki Shikibu. Her writing style usually involved list taking, and it is with her help that much of the culture of ancient Japan can be understood.

This year, Sei Shonagon was played by the geiko Mameya.

Traditionally worn by senior maiko during the month of March, the botan (peony) flower is loved and revered as the "king of flowers" for its rich and ornate beauty. In tsumami kanzashi, it is represented with multiple stacked layers of petals with carefully ruffled edges, finished with a fluffy center and light green leaves. Mounted on an alligator clip for easy wear, this piece measures approximately 2.5" in diameter.

November sees the leave change their colors from green, to yellow to fiery red! Large bouquets of small maple leaves Autumn are popular with junior Maiko and are especially attractive thanks to shidare.

You can easily see the difference between the first and last leaves I've made - practice makes perfect!

I've been trying to make a picture catalogue of my kimono collection for insurance and organization needs, and I thought I might put it up here for everyone's amusement (and in case my other copies of it get lost).

This is a Taisho period geisha's hikizuri, or a long, trailing kimono from the mid-late 1920s. It is made from ro silk, which is silk woven in an open style that is worn for a few months in the height of summer. The design is of flowing water, always a classic summer image, and autumn grasses, a common motif for ro kimono that are worn around the end of summer. Autumn grasses are one of my favorite motifs, they have such an elegant feeling of melancholy, I think.

For a name I chose Kayaka, combining the kanji for grasses and song. Looking at this piece I can almost feel and hear the breeze rustling the grasses, and I wanted a name that reflected that.

Moi pobratymcy nie lubią kiedy krwiopijna padlina podbiera im upatrzoną ofiarę. Twoje dzisiejsze śniadanie było wyjątkowym chłopcem. Jego przyszłość była dla nas cenna. Czasami, piękna pani, należy trzymać ząbki przy sobie. Wbiła kołek w pierś wijącej się na bruku postaci. Łatwo poszło. Aż za bardzo.

Yes, yet another in "asian inspired" series. One more to come, I think. I'm sick of the series already, but I have to finish it soon for the diploma.
