Witness the power of nature...

The last image of the "Twilight Towers" series. As this updraft progressed eastward, its shield of mammatus clouds continued to flicker with lightning. Its updraft appeared to be struggling with inflow, but it sustained itself until it was too distant to be visible. Don't worry though, this shouldn't be the last you see of this storm. I've got enough frames of it to make a timelapse

Montserrat Monastery

I went on a trip with a Korean friend through Europe two summers ago. One of our stops backpacking through Europe was Barcelona. Someone had mentioned this amazing monastery up in the Montserrat mountains and said it was worth the day trip to get there. So we went and it was definitely an incredible experience. The view was fantastic and the hike up the mountain was unforgettable.

The first night here was rainy and grey skies stayed another night to see if it would be a little more colorful sunset, it choked out in the end, but there was a little color to be seen, amazing

I took this panorama the morning past "Quietly". The alpenglow at sunrise wasn't very strong and because of the wind I didn't took a worth photo but the weather turned better later.

There are certain scenes, moments, and feelings in life which linger on in your memory. Like catching the eye of the one you fall in love with, the first kiss, holding hands and watching the sunset, hearing the first piece of music send a chill down your spine, which then forms your favourite band, musician, or genre. These are the types of things that stay with you the rest of your life; things you can look back upon and smile with a light heart.

My life's goal is to capture precious light -- whether it be in the form of photons that have potentially travelled millions of years to fall upon my camera's sensor from the most distant celestial wonders, to the light that travels 8 minutes from our own star, to strike the Earth in the guise of a beautiful sunrise -- when I do capture something special, it lingers within me and leaves a lasting impression.

This scene was captured after 3 days of waiting for the right light. I feel very lucky and blessed to have been able to witness (and, experience) one of the, if not, the most beautiful sunrise I have ever seen, at one of the most remote, primal and pristine places left in the world -- Milford Sound.

To give you an idea as to the sheer scale of this place, the waterfall that you can see at centre right (Stirling Falls) is approximately 8 km away.

With the soft light illuminating the clouds from the western horizon to the east and to the south behind me, in a gorgeous pink, it is something that I will never forget.

The 5D Mark II remains a landscape eating machine.

ABOUT THE IMAGE:
During my time in the Canadian Rockies of Alberta Canada I visited Moraine Lake on a number of occasions. I continually went back there not only to capture it under varying conditions but simply because the place is AMAZING. Each and every time I made it up there I would sit and stare in awe. It is hard not to.

Prior to my latest visit of this location I had captured it under your typical sunny summer conditions and on other occasions completely or partially frozen over but I still wasnt satisfied. I wanted it snow covered with the lake in its liquid state.

On this particular occasion I was driving back to where I was living in Canmore, Alberta, Canada from Olympic National Park in Washington U.S.A. It was a long day of driving and after just having spent almost 2 months living out of my van/tent on the road I was ready to get home to Canmore. Anyway, I was just one hour from Canmore at 10:30pm when it started to snow pretty heavily, enough so that I was convinced it was going to stick (It was fall so the temperatures had just began to take a dive becoming cold enough for snow to not melt as soon as it landed). I thought to myself, this may be the last and only opportunity I get to shoot Moraine Lake and the Valley of the Ten Peaks blanketed in snow. I figured it was too good of an opportunity to pass up and spent the night in the van hoping the conditions cleared in the morning.

Im happy I decided to stick it out for one last night. What a magic morning.

Good morning in Icelandic

My second picture of this wonderful place - this time an original without panoramacrop.
That perspective is well known among us photographers. I couldn´t leave without hasn´t shoot it .
Of course i don´t want to deprive you not this gigantic "almost" arctic sunrise.
Thanks to my extreme wide angle I could bring the Kirkjufellfalls with the Kirkjufell in the background and the rising sun on one photo.
You are on the legendary Peninsula Snaefellsness in Iceland.

Extravagant Garden

Regarding Mount Rainier's grand flower-filled, subalpine meadows, renowned naturalist John Muir once stated the following: "Every one of these parks, great and small, is a garden filled knee-deep with fresh, lovely flowers of every hue, the most luxuriant and the most extravagantly beautiful of all the alpine gardens I ever beheld in all my mountain-top wanderings."

In late summer, the subalpine meadows around the Paradise area of Mount Rainier erupt with vibrant, kaleidoscopic wildflowers. On this August morning, a lenticular cloud hovers atop the Rainier's peak as the first rays of light flood Mazama Ridge, revealing the vibrant purple Subalpine Lupine and red Indian Paintbrush.

Kirkjufell Panorama

We came here on our first night in Iceland. The wind was very strong which make it hard to get sharp shots and keep the tripod steady, but I managed to get a few I was happy with. This was made up of 6 vertical photos - 3 for the land & 3 for the sky, then merged in Photoshop. On the left the sun is setting, on the right the moon is rising.

Thanks for the overwhelming response to this picture, as a bonus I share some information I usually keep for myself.

This picture was taken freehand, I used my Canon 5D Mark II and my 70-200 2.8 IS USM lens. It was then taken to Lightroom3, I used NIK HDR EFEX Pro (GREAT piece of software) to pull out some more detail in the shadows and to make the steam POP out of the image. Then I applied a bit of color look, thats it. This picture was finished in under five minutes in post production.

I don't remember exactly when this was shot--this year, for sure. I remember the storm and the HUGE shelf that formed right before my very lens. I rememeber how freakin' fast that sucker was moving towards me too I tried to take a quick panorama of it but it didn't work out and since I am all about the lightning I didn't worry too much about the rest of the storm.

I shot until the shelf was almost on top of me and broke down my tripod and camera and climbed back into my truck just as the gust front hit

Too bad I didn't get a fantastic capture out of it

BTW~I've been insanely busy lately and I'm way behind on messages and deviations--I'll get to them though so, if you get a message from me that doesn't make any kind of sense just know that at some point in the past you made a comment to me that I am JUST NOW responding to!

Walt made the comparison between these two shots--strangely similar, no?

I took this picture on July 28th 2009 at Lac Blanc, located at 2,352 m (7,716 ft) on the Aiguilles Rouges above Chamonix, France.

The hour was around 6pm... I think the cable car La Flégère is closed around that time, so the number of tourists drastically reduces...  I remember that day I've been waiting really a lot before start shooting, and not only for the presence of people, but also because in the early afternoon the mirror reflection was totally absent and the very special design of clouds appeared only in the early evening.  But, you know, it's a great stunning place, and really it was a true pleasure that waiting time
This area is well known indeed, from here you can admire all the magnificence of the Mont Blanc massif French side!

Water washes in all directions as waves batter the multi layer rocks of the Arniston coastline in warm dawn light. This specific cauldron in the coastline is very curteous to photographers as it absorbs the kinetic energy of the wave and softly pushes over the edge instead of crashing over in a dramatic display of camera wrecking water. Once the wave pulls away and the water flows back off the rock shelf it creates brilliant water cascades.

Arniston is just a few kilometers from the geographic confluence of the Indian and Atlantic oceans at the Southernmost tip of Africa, hence the title.

This was taken in the french Pyrénées. A delicious morning light revealed the true splendor of those mountains, complimented by pretty cirrus clouds... a great moment.
The lake is called "Lac d'Aumar", definitely a very nice place !

Sacred Land

The Navajo reservation land Arizona. A storm cloud was just making it's way across the plain, and ended up ruining a great photo shoot of the Monument Valley park. I was able to get some great shots of the other spires though.

I should clarify that the photo I am speaking of that was ruined was of the Monument Valley, not this shot here. I guess I should have clarified that earlier. Sorry about the confusion, I don't think this shot was ruined, these are the other spires.

Alone watching one of the most incredible sunsets I've seen in years. This place became an instant favorite the moment I laid eyes on the tufa formations. I've seen so many images from here I knew I had to add it to my list of travels. I could spend weeks here photographing all there is around the lake and want to return for another few weeks. All within two days, I took some of my favorite images to date. I have heard that a sierra sunset is something to see once in your life, and I was lucky enough to get one within hours of my trip. This image was taken just a few yards from :thumb305033607: and shows a more traditional composition. My favorite part about this image, is that there is an active osprey nest on the tufa formation in the back and I was lucky enough to view them interacting with one another. Just wish I could have gotten a great shot of them over the tufas.

After an evening of 2 rain storms and a hail storm the clouds passed on through and revealed a beautifully clear night sky. Here is a shot of the milky way over Mt Assiniboine in the BC backcountry. The amount of stars that were visible was just incredible!

I love this one. I love low key, the heavy black and low light in photos. Perhaps this is my new style, who knows?
