This is a piece originally made for the Prismatic Art Collection. The intention was to do a big fantasy battle featuring women heroes of different backgrounds. It was fun doing a fantasy scene where I got to choose all the parts rather than work solely from a strict description (although it did end up taking longer for me to complete, since I kept changing my mind).

my fb hit 10k likes last month and I asked everyone what they wanted to see in celebration, and a tutorial was one of the popular choices! So I painted this freshly and recorded the entire process. I will organize it once I have the time and make a video/pictorial tutorial out of it! In the meantime pls bathe in sexual tension

a lot of ppl asked for large resolution pics too for celebration, but I couldn't think of a way to distribute these without risking some asshole taking it and selling it. during the second arenian expansion, lady ophelia , ruler of the corredan dukedom was on her own after the death of her husband. many worried how the generally silent duchess who rarely spoke in any of the political meetings would hold the reigns on the one of the greatest lordships in the continent.

some thought that the silent duchess might be manipulated, used for their own plans. first year of her reign she fulfilled the expectations nobles had of her. she kept things going as well as she could in times of war.

rumors spread. corredan dukedom was bordering the arenian expanse, and with many messengers of areni dropping by, lords presumed that lady ophelia would ally the corredan lands with areni.

little did they know that in silence lady ophelia listened. while many shouted, and argued , she pondered. she worried. she was a smart woman. proficient in histories and lore. and a great worry burdened her.

it was over a year since arenians started slaying dragons. harvesting their tears, all for the purpose of gaining the greater military edge.

most say in it only that. the sole danger was with arenians. ophelia had her own opinions. she knew of old alliances dragons made with people of ravine. of old promises sealed in blood and fire.

she saw the mistrust in dragons recently, aggression even. she saw and heard them roaring towards west. calling.

it would be an understatement to say that the lords and kings of the lands that opposed arenians were shocked to receive a summon from lady corredan. yet most of them answered it. and so, on an autumn night, ophelia corredan shared with them her fear.

arenians broke the pact with the dragons, old code that said man would not slay a dragon nor a dragon man. , now dragons called. they called for justice, they called for blood...and she thought there is one that might answer

baran, the eldest living dragon, giver of magic and son of mergarand the dragonfather, and barahea the dragonmother. of the eldest , he alone lives.... somewhere in the west.

ophelia proposed that they must stand alongside dragons. show their allegiances, and stop the bloodshed.

some agreed, possibly more for personal interests. united alliance is far more efficient at scaring off the opponent.
some said they would consider it.

and so corredans organized raids in which dragons were released, saved again and again.

still..arenians were relentless... and dragons, kept calling.

it was late winter that baran answered their call, and obliterated arenian borders. he then called his kin, and from them hr found out that not all have broken the code. many defended it with their very lives. baran learned of the woman. lady corredan. and with her he made the final pact. that of corredan flame. not a pact of mastery, but protection. just as corredans protected his kind, so will his kind treat corredans and all blessed by them as family.

and dragons take good care of their family.

ophelia's wisdom saved many lives that year, and later on she was inducted as an honorary matriarch of the sisterhood of anya. what was once the dukedom of corredans had become a great city. it's name was dregya, and it was protected

The process went by receiving the colored sketches originally done by Alex and re-inking/coloring them and then changing their expressions. Some of these got changed around a bit for the final release. Minette was the only NPC I basically got to freehand completely.

Ellipse Tutorial

You know that green ellipse tool that you bought in art school? Do you know how to use it for something other than oval shapes? Do you know what those "cross-hair" marks are for? And do you know how to use it for technically correct perspective drawings?

TOO many comics artists don't, and it's driving me crazy. So instead of starting a blog that starts showing examples and naming names, I figured it was better to make a quick tutorial. And this isn't just for cars but also for guns, fire hydrants, and millions of other machined objects found in comics.

If you go through this and you're still stuck, please don't write to me. I'm happy to show you at a convention to make it clearer, but within a blog this is the best I can do. Check out "Perspective for Comic Artists by David Chelsea" for more.

TIP #1

Cars are a whole lot easier to draw if you know how to properly use perspective and ellipses. The more familiar you are with the math, the more fun it is to draw cars. Once I figured out the ellipse tool and starting drawing tires that actually looked like they fit the car, I was hooked. A good car drawing is 50% about making the tires look correct. Check out the tutorial I'm posting in my gallery.

TIP #2

Comic artists are usually good at drawing Batman because they care about Batman. Batman resonates with them on a personal level of some kind whether from watching the cartoon, playing a video game, or dressing up like him for holidays. It's easier to draw things when you care about them.

It's my opinion that most artists are bad at drawing cars because they don't really care about them. Sure, they like driving them or maybe they like the engine noise, but they still see them as machines and not as works of art (maybe because most artists are poor, they can't afford a cool one that they would see as a work of art). In other words, they don't care about cars like they care about Batman.

The first car I got good at drawing was my car in high school: a yellow Honda CRX. Because it was mine (and because I had all kinds of memories and feelings wrapped up in it), I found I could draw it better than I could the Batmobile. From then one out, the more I learned about cars, the more interesting I found them, and the better I got at drawing them. Understanding terms like "down-force", "apexing", and "four-on-the-floor" makes me draw better cars because it's using more of my brain to do it. I don't want to JUST draw a Batmobile, I want it to have the correct spoiler and be leaning on the correct wheel as it power-slides through a corner. I want readers to be infected by my love of the Batmobile via my drawing.

As an exercise, find a car that you like and do some research on it. Learn about it's design team, the time in which is was created, and why it was a good or bad car (or pick a plane, a boat or any other machined object). Try to build a connection to it by understanding it's story.

If you're having trouble, here's a link to a Top Gear episode where they did a quick documentary about the history of Saab (it's 12 minutes). I never liked Saabs, but the history of Saab issuch a cool story that it makes me want to draw one. Watch it and see if it does the same for you.

It's okay if you're the type who hates drawing cars and will always hate drawing cars. To be honest, I hate drawing poker tables. And it wouldn't matter if I learned about the history of poker tables, I'd still hate it. But I bet it'd still get better at it.

TIP #3

It goes without saying that practice makes perfect. And it's the same for cars. It's hard at first, but the more you draw cars, the more familiar you are with their basic principles and curves. Soon you will be able to quickly sketch a convincing car into the background of a panel without referencing.

Most of all, be patient. Cars are one of the hardest things to draw, I find. But once you get good at them, every other machined object is easy.

I could have easily spent another day or so just going over this and trying to perfect everything, but alas; I'm out of time! So here it is, imperfections and all.

I don't make a habit out of entering contests, but I figured as the last one I entered was about 12 years ago... It was probably about time, plus I love the sound of this one! I wanted to give it a bit of a poster feel and took a little inspiration from some of my favorite movies and posters; Indiana Jones, Back to The Future... all my favorites, you get the idea.

No references for this one, just a butt load of grain and grunge textures! Grrrrr.

I have drawn this character a few time in my sketchbook and in a couple of speedpaintings but it occured to me that I never uploaded any of it. I really need to practice my brushpen skills, so I made this.

I like the illustration but I'm not satisfied with the suit design, because it doesn't reflect what I wanted the character to be.
05 is supposed to be eternal and indestructible, while in this design, there are too many small pieces and exposed articulations. I'll try again sometime

I got back to drawing for myself recently and I plan to continue uploading stuff regularly from now on.

About this image. I have been listening to podcasts and lectures about writing over the past few weeks and it made me understand something. I'm not ready to write and draw Among The Waves (the project about Marine, the witch). So instead I picked another of my ideas, a much simpler one, and decided to start with this instead.
However, I wanted to start drawing again and since it's been a long time I haven't drawn anything on paper instead of photoshop, I had to pick a subject I'm familiar with .

I just finished up illustrations for the 2014 Astrology Calendar for Llewellyn Worldwide. Here is the cover art I did earlier this year. I'll hopefully be able post the interior illustrations for each sign at some point. For the sake of fitting everything on the cover, I had to use some of the symbolic animals/objects (crab, scorpion, ox, etc) whereas for the individual illustrations, each one is personified instead; I tried to take special care with each one. You can preorder the calendar if you like, or just check out the rest of Llewellyn Worldwide's offerings at www.llewellyn.com.
(edit: I realize looking at it now that Sagittarius' archery form is very off; I had help getting the actual Sagittarius illustration properly posed, so hopefully I can show that soon )
