[Tutorial] Semirealistic Eye

My first tutorial ! Some people asked me how I draw eyes so I decided to make a tutorial about it. I used photoshop CS4 for this tutorial (it may work for SAI)! Hope this make sense and helps <3

edit: People have asked about the overlay step. Overlay brightens and darkens the colours as well as make the piece knit together more fluently??? its hard to explain. it sorta gives an overall atmosphere to the piece to make it look like everything belongs together =~=;; //shotdown

for sketching and lining i like to use the first marker tool presented in step 7!

I drew the piece with PITT pens and COPIC markers on Strathmore Drawing paper, scanned it, and colorized it using Adobe Photoshop CS2.

A few people have asked me to show what changes from grayscale lineart to final color, and hopefully this shows what the process entails.

Just a (not altogether in focus) glimpse at something in progress. The title is only what I named the file as, not the title of the actual piece. This will eventually be moved to scraps.

Drawing with a brush is the most wonderful thing ever.

Bird Wings Tutorial

I did this quicky in an evening. If you spot spelling mistakes and the same, please tell me and I’ll try to fix it. English isn’t my native language but I did my best in such a short time. I don't pretend that this is THE RIGHT AND ONLY way to draw wings but it's my way.

This tutorial cover the basic feathered wing drawing and some additional infos on feather with visual examples of do’s and don’t’s.

I may do a bat/dragon wings tutorial if i get good feadback on this one.

Black Cat - Tutorial

I thought I'd post a quick walk through of the way I colored the "Black Cat" image.

This is a new technique that I've fallen in love with that involves painting the image in gray-tones and, then with the area selected, laying the colors over the top using: Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Gradient Map .

Of course this isn't the only way to color - there are many MANY coloring techniques, and none are really "right or wrong". What's right is whatever works for you.

This was one of my favorite images of my own work, and this new technique has really helped a lot. I hope some of you colorists give this technique a try too.

Lackadaisy Expressions

Boy, I didn't know what I was getting myself into when I started this. I've had requests for some sort of expressions tutorial dating back a while now, so I figured, "Sure! I can explain expression drawing...and I'll make it way better than all those tutorials out there that are nothing but charts of generic expressions. Yeah! Just give me a day or two to whip something up..."

Um. Sometime a lot more than two days later, I have this messy behemoth and the realization that I haven't a clue how to teach expression drawing. There's just so much material to cover, and so much of it is like intuitive language translation, I can't figure how to put it into tutorial form any more than I could draw a picture of how to speak Russian. I guess that's why expression tutorials are mostly just charts of what happy, sad, and confused look like.

Anyway, I found all I could really do was try to explain ways to teach yourself...and then add some pictures. Hopefully that makes for something at least marginally informative.

I'm really, really sorry about the lack of update, guys. Struggling a lot with the comic lately.
I put this panel process rundown together for Draw! recently, though, and even though it's not very exciting, I figured at least it's something I could share in the meantime.

This process has gotten vastly more complicated since I started working on Lackadaisy. Pages used to be almost 100% pencil with just a little sepia tone added digitally. Now, after penciling, a panel often requires hours of additional work. (Put 12 or 15 panels together per page, and it adds up to at least part of the reason I fail so hard at regular updates.)

This tutorial deals with custom divs: how to set them up, what can be used, what code is needed in the journal etc.

You might want to read Journal CSS Part 1 first:
it deals with the process of designing a CSS journal and of how to get the basics coded.

If you have no idea what CSS is, I suggest you read up on the basics before tackling this tutorial.
In here, I just assume you know what a div is...

EDIT: To make the right colum work properly in IE as well, add position:relative; to the div called .right - I'll update the file to reflect this asap!

matte painting tutorial

BEGINNERS : THIS IS A SHORTCUT METHOD. fundamentals are still more important.

EDIT EDIT : i changed the title to matte painting : / though it's really not, as actual matte paintings are very time consuming and painstaking pieces.

EDIT : i'm surprised at all the bashing that'd been going on for this simple tutorial. it's not THE way to paint, it's just a quick and dirty way to get things done/get an idea across. someone asked that i showed them this technique, and so i thought to share it here.

photos and textures are sometimes used in art pieces, and especially when the piece is to be done fast. matte paintings, which are longer and more painstaking to do, also uses photographs.

Kojima study

For some odd reason I got carried away by Ayami Kojima's art again.. For those who don't know, she has worked as an illustrator for Castlevania games (genre:vampires/adventure/action/whateva), and does her job damn well. This time I was enamoured with the way she drew young Dracula, and I love one particular picture of him (can be found at [link] >multimedia>official artwork> page2>Castlevania Chronicles, 4th pic) but the pic is so damn small everywhere..

I've always wanted to see his face properly, so I got this mad idea to draw him using Kojima's style. Since I really didn't have much references of Dracula's younger features, I decided to mold some from other characters of Castlevania games. For that, I did a little research, and listed a bit what I needed.. I also sketched and examined Kojimas style of face features a little to get a better understanding of her style. Damn those pretty boys...

Unfortunately I haven't been able to start the progress yet, but I thought it a good idea to put a little teaser here.. I just hope I really get to draw that hottie one day. Man I've got too many projects (again)...
