It's that time of year when I release a calendar once again.
2012 really flew by quickly, didn't it?

Well, I'm really excited for 2013 coming around the bend and especially for this particular calendar. I've decided to do things a bit differently for the 2013 calendar by showcasing the incredible beauty of Guatemala, Central America.

The Mustang was always one of of my favorite warbirds of all time. I think the "Razorback" B model with the Malcolm hood is the most beautifull version of this famous airplane.

Some Mustangs are still flying today, if you ever have seen them in the air, heard the mighty Rollce Royce engines, you will never forget that moment.

Inspired by aviation art painters like Robert Taylor or Roy Grinnell I tried to be most historical correct. These are birds of the 357th Fighter Group, the famous "Yoxford Boys". The leading fighter is the P-51 of Cpt. Johnny England crossing the French cost, somewhere in Summer 1944. Will they come back home this time?

When i was a child, i loved to build modelkits of ships and planes. But it was the artwork on the box top, that really excited me. Those artworks were done by artists like John Steel, Jack Leynnwood or Roy Cross and all those years, they still impress me.

My painting is a homage to all those great artists. It shows the IJN Kaga, a heavy aircraft carrier of the imperial Japanese navy on her last voyage in 1942. At first light, she is heading trough heavy seas of the pacific towards Midway island, where she will meet her fate.

I spend hours and hours of research to get the technical details right, but the most challenge became the waves, which I have overpainted a couple of times until i was satisfied.

Photoshop, no cheats, no texture, no 3D...just painting.

Milky Station

Glenreagh Railway Station - Coffs Coast - New South Wales, Australia

The station is overgrown and the buildings are in poor condition. The water tank and signal frame are still present, along with some decaying rolling stock in the yard. I fell in love with this old shed, with the old station in the background and the milky way above was just sensational!

This Sunday, I visited a Gypsy (Roma) camp close to my family's house for the first time. Needless to say, it was such a surreal experience. The conditions in which they live here in Brazil is simply unreal.

While drinking some coffee with them, a bunch of kids came running over literally begging to be photographed. So I took a bunch of photos and showed it back to them through the LCD preview screen. They absolutely loved it, so I promised to bring back actual printed photos for them to keep on my next visit. As you can imagine, they can barely wait.

I'll try posting a few shots here on dA for you all to see. This photo here is of one little blond gypsy boy. Not sure what his name is, but his reality is definitely "worlds apart" from most.. Hence the title.

Kenneth Chamberlain, Sr. was a 68-year-old African American Marine veteran. Police were called to his house because of a false alarm from a medical alert pendant that he wore. When the police arrived he told them that they were not needed, and he was fine. The medical alert dispatcher also told the police that they were withdrawing their alert. The police demanded entry (while using racial slurs), and broke down Mr. Chamberlain's door. After gaining entry in Mr. Chamberlain's private residence they shot him with a taser, and then fatally shot him with their firearms.

Though this event happened in November, no action has been taken against the police officers. The audio recording of the incident (from the medical alert communicator) has been confiscated and not allowed into public view.

I usually do not do much politically inspired art, it is too depressing for me. However, after reading about this incident, I feel like I have to do whatever small part I can to raise awareness about what went on.

I am finally back from a very short trip all around Netherlands .
Few birds and a good weather
So finally, I am back. The trip in Belgium was great too !!! I learned a lot about nature photography (that is always the case when you meet some of the greatest nature photographer on earth)

This is one of the bird we saw... a common kestrel on Texel island. This island is just so great.

And for the curious : yes, the 300 2.8 + 2x combo work well

Sorry for being VERY absent now, I have something like the exhibition of my life in a week so I need that all be prepared.

I process pictures all the day long (and until 5am this morning) to find some good pictures in 191 994 pictures I made...

These manta rays are hopefully the first of many elasmobranchs from me. I found them incredibly fun to do, given that their physiology is so different to the cetaceans I usually draw. They've always reminded me of some kind of otherworldly spacecraft; seeing them in person, and watching them move, blows my mind every time. They're just fantastic animals.

I just took this photo a few days ago on my trip through Florida with my sister. On our way down to Key West, we stopped by Miami. I googled the best spot to shoot the skyline at night and managed to find it on the iPhone's gps. Luckily the night was pretty clear and I was able to get a few good shots.

A few drops rendered in the new 3Ds Max Apocalypse Edition (i.e.: 2012) and a brand new Mental Ray 3.9 which pretty much seems to do everything the same as the older versions as far as I'm concerned.

Some Technical Details:

I'm pretty much done with the L_Glass shader and have moved on to the much more reliable arch_mat (if you use maya that's mia_material for you). There is an outer shell and an inner shell. The inner shell actually emits light (These are in fact the only source of enlightenment), similarly to those glow tubes you see passed around in those raggedy night clubs. Two giant white cubes used only for reflection purposes. Final Gather is quite precise and is also quite bouncy. Finally some colour correction done in our favourite software -that no one here really pays for- photoshop CS5.

Edit: Woww... A DD, I really never expected to get another one of these. It's a very pleasant surprise! Thanks everyone.

one of my Saudi Arabian friends took me to a desert to check out an oasis that he had found and of course, I had to bring my camera along... So while there, I took a few cool shots of the place... there's just something about a desert that is so peaceful and serene. I loved it.
