Finally!
I can't even tell you how long ive been looking foward to posting something from the batches of Magic the Gathering Cards I started doing last year at around this time!
I don't even know when the last time I posted something was and it's been keeeelin me.

This is one of 6 cards I did for the latest expansion: New Phyrexia.

You're looking at 10 years of dreams, hard work and heartache. Freelancing for Wizards of the Coast is something that I always thought would be just a pipe dream; just a fantasy.
Being able to post this is quite literally a dream come true, I used to look at magic cards and think i'd never make it; never be good enough; never have what it took to compete.

Im just getting started.

Clarification: This didnt take me 10 years to make, hee hee. It took me 10 years to get my skills to a place where I was happy enough with them so I could hopefully Illustrate for Wizards of the Coast.

Also as of this writing - 2/19/2011 - this is just a teaser wallpaper on the Mirrodin site, it isnt currently a card.
Im afraid I cant offer any further information about the identity of this personality/creature/effect/item other than what is posted here.

Here are the hard specs since im getting lots of folks asking about them in notes and in comments - thank you by the way for asking:

Software used: Photoshop 7 only.

Reference, influence, design: I didnt design this creature, I was asked to re-imagine it from a very rough sketch in the style guide that was provided by the design team at Magic.

Completion time: Roughly 2 weeks from sketch to finish.

Woah.

This one took me a long-long time to get done.
I started this sucker in october and then (thankfully) promptly got slammed with several professional gigs, which I hope to post samples of soon once the NDA is lifted on them.

This one was a challenge, its one of the largest pieces ive ever done and certainly one of the most dense. Im also generally pretty crappy with things like cars, so parts of this one came slowly.
This work is one of four out of a series I plan to do, which will be mundane, everyday interractions between people in a futuristic bladerunnerish type megacity. Im not sure im going to do all of them back to back, but its tempting.

I hope you enjoy it as much as I did creating it!

I have the privelege and honor of having others who are interested in my art ask me questions about it, so I thought id go ahead and post a few answers that im commonly asked when I post something new, hopefully some of you out there will find them useful:

1) *All* work is done in Photoshop 7, from sketch to finish, no other programs are used.

2) I dont mock up in 3D or use 3D programs

3) I sketch on a color background in dark value then add color, then I bring out the light sources

4) I use no references, swap files or tracing but I will glance at a few photos if I get stuck on a particular aspect or want historical/structural accuracy.

5) Most pieces take me 2 weeks to illustrate 6-8 hours a day, 6 days a week.

Of the clandestine organization known as the Pepper Task Force, little is known. As such, the only credible information available are as follows:

The Pepper Task Force specializes in neutralizing despots, sabotaging the development of WMDs, and generally keeping the world as we know it from crumbling. Armed with operative-recognition arsenal (O.R.A.) blades and handguns, they conduct their missions covertly, with a success rate of 99.9998%.

Covert operatives affiliated with said organization are identified by their code names; Agent Wanda, Female, Age Unknown; Agent Majin, Male, Age Unknown. They are headed by a person simply known as Pepper, Gender Unknown, Age Unknown. This Office speculates that there are more unidentified operatives, given the numerous missions in several locations unofficially credited to the Pepper Task Force, and the timing by which these missions took place.

It's not pretty, nor was it ever meant to be.
It was a time when people forgot what was right and did as they saw fit in their own eyes. And what they saw fit was ugly and brutal. They turned into the darkness and turned on each other.

And as the story goes there was a man from the tribe of Levi who took a concubine for himself. Treating her poorly she left him to return to her father. Months later he came back to claim her. After many a delay they set off for his home and when night approached he made the fatal error of going not to Jerusalem, but to the city of Gibeah who were of the tribe of Benjamin.

Met there by an ominous silence, they were taken into the home of an old man who begged them not to stay in the main square. It was not long before the mob arrived to demand the Levite and being the man he was, he saved himself and threw his concubine to storm.

In the morning when they were finished she crawled to the doorstep but could make it no further. Did he sleep that night hearing his woman's cries? Did he make her pay for his own weakness? For his own lack of faith? Regardless, when he arose to leave, he did not cry (or so we're told) but merely said, "Get up." The answer to which was a deadly silence.

He took her then upon his donkey to return home.
He cut her to twelve pieces that day to send each part to a tribe of Israel as evidence of the horror that happened that day in a town that forgot God.

But who really forgot God I ask?

His tactic succeeded however and Israel cut the tribe of Benjamin to pieces in the greatest civil war of Israel's history. It was the time of the Judges and everyone did as they saw fit in their own eyes.

I have been working on this series now for over a year. It challenges me on every level....technically, logistically, emotionally and spiritually. This piece I ended up creating at Theory Labs November 2nd in a twelve minute performance for an audience at our fall Artwalk. It was a risky choice to say the least...

But it was the piece I knew I had to make, so once that is known, there is nothing else to do but to do it. The three proceeding panels I'll make over the next 2 weeks.

I love listening to movie soundtracks once and a while when I work on a piece instead of the usual nuclear death-metal meltdown that occurs the other 90% of the time.

One of my favorite compositions is by Basil Poledouris, called "The Anvil of Crom", from the Conan the Barbarian Soundtrack.
When I first heard it in the theatre it totally floored me; I felt like something was going to happen..something serious.
Of course Arnold-Friggin-Schwarzenegger was serious enough at the time but afterwards the music stayed with me and continued to work overtime on my imagination - and still does.

I fired it up the other day and as soon as I did I heard armor being smashed to bits, horses and men crying out in fear and some monstrous entity bellowing in fury mixed in with the music.

Dont ask its just how my mind works

This piece was the visual result of that daydream.

It took longer than the usual 2 weeks due to my daughter being born, getting her first cold (awwwww), a sudden case of carparal tunnel sydrome and tendonitis as well as hurricane gustav barreling through town.

I glanced at a few pictures of some storm-clouds and some roman armor to make sure I got the details right, other than that: no references.

In case you've never heard the composition im talking about heres the youtube link, but be warned; the video leaves a lot to be desired, hehe - although I cant help but enjoy the dudes pure enthusiasm for his collectors item.

Welp, gang, here are some takes I drew of some older type folks I took pics of at the Sawdust festival. I rarely draw looking from life, but dang, is it refreshing. People have all kinds of cool shapes don't they? It makes ya wonder what their story is, huh?

In other news, I survived San Diego Comicon! WOWSERS was that a con or what?! Thank you, everbody, who made it out to our booth, and to the Spider-man Animated panel. I hope you liked the sneakpeek into season 2.

I brought 500 books and took home 70. Thank you to everyone who made that happen!!! You should have seen my car pulling into San Diego Wednesday afternoon. One would have mistaken it to be a lowrider. 17 boxes, some luggage and a dolly on top of the car will do that to ya. HAHAHA

This weekend I will be mailing out more online orders of the book. I am still gathering shipping info for those interested, and I will post them soon, so anyone else may purchase it.

Little nervous about this one.
This is a finish of the original sketch thats in my sketches folder.
I had a good amount of people express interest in this one getting finished, so I simply *had to* because im a sucker for folks wanting me to finish something that im not feeling so hot about - it gets me out of myself and my comfort zone.
Now this may sound pretentious and dumb but im going to ask anyway: have you ever drawn something that feels like its drawing itself and your just kinda there spectating?
This was one of those pieces for me, things just seemed to fall into place, it was weird.

Im nervous that it wont live up to the peoples expectations that really wanted to see it finished - I hope my version does it justice guys; thanks for pushing me.

Completed from start to finish in photoshop7.
I glanced at a few photo's of gothic church windows and french sword hilts as a guide to make sure the details were right - other than that, no references.

Ive been dying to do a sci-fi monster piece for a long time now and this one has elements that ive been trying to incorporate into a composition for a long time.

I glanced at a few photos of various abandoned factories, camcorders and CDC biohazard suits for accuracy's sake, in addition to several close-up stills of a couple 80's horror movies used to get the expression I wanted for the foreground victim.

I've been slacking off so far this year... but I managed to get something out for the massive Last Man Standing thunderdome at conceptart.org. Kind of a rush job... and looking at all the amazing entries people came out with, I'm feeling pretty motivated to start busting my ass again. The level gap between me and the pros is glaring me in the face, so I can't wait to start improving myself. Wasted half a year, and life is too short for that.

As iconic as Boris Karloff's Frankenstein's monster, Charles Laughton's 1939 make up and portrayal of The Hunchback of Notre Dame has become THE accepted version of poor old Qusimodo and so was the natural one for me to base my own, somewhat comic, version on.

This was made very quickly(about a week from start to finish) for a movie exhibition at the Cineaqua Muveum in Paris where it will be on permanent display from the 1st of June...it's right in the shadow of the Eiffel Tower, so if you're in the area and a bit bored go check it out!!

This is made from silicone over a fibre glass base with glass eyes (which I didn't make) and real hair.....he's 'life' size.

This is one of the first Artwork of Deus Ex III being revealed (sorry in French). I can't say a lot about it (or I'll die) except that the level artists have done an incredible job so far and it looks better than the painting. The game is on the right track and it'll be a great experience... can't even wait to play it.

This past weekend Australia paused to remember their fallen during ANZAC day. Its simply impossible to justify war at the best of times but for me its rewarding to see so many people quietly reflecting on history's terrible events and acknowledging those who paid the ultimate sacrifice...

I dragged out the old box of photos and drew this 18 year old boy as he sat in the wind, surrounded by the hardware of war. He is reading the little red bible they gave us, valiantly trying to find strength in talking with God.

I often wish that we as a people would learn from the pain of the past, but it seems that we just never learn....
