Helps with depth and variation.

(6) Flats now applied! Not much to say here.

(7) Added some slight tints and fades and blurs. All to add more depth and separate the foreground to the background.

(8) Ta Dahhhh, Final product.
Did up the Fire (love doing fire in celshades), GR's chain and some more extra stuff to spiff it up.
REALLY enjoyed this piece.

Cheers for viewing, and for reading all this, hah!

MORE WALKTHROUGHS HERE!

            </media:community>
I was commissioned to do a piece for a client recently and they asked for a pin-up style woman baking ( it ended up being a gift for his wife). I decided this would be en excellent opportunity for a tutorial on how I go about doing my marker rendered pieces. This is the first in 4 steps and all will be posted separately so, if you would like to see the rest of the process, please check out the following links to the other Deviantart entries. step 2: [link] Step 3: [link] Step 4: [link]

STEP 1:

For the first step I decide what the subject matter is going to be and what idea I would like to express in the piece. For this I decided to go with a 40s style housewife while incorporating the same peek-a-boo style good girl art of the same era. 2 of my favorite artists are Norman Rockwell and Gil Elvgren. Norman, for his ability to tell a story in one single image. Gil, for his innocent way or expressing female sexuality with his amazing pin-ups. If you want to see more of their work, google either of their names and prepare to be amazed. For this reason I decided to do a Elvgren style pin-up with the story sensibilities of Norman Rockwell.

I decided to go with a woman trying to bake some cookies but realizing (thanks to her cookbook) that she has used salt instead of sugar while, at the same time, her dog is cautiously sniffing a splatter of batter she dropped on the floor. I begin with a sketch of the main character of the piece. I heavily reference old catalogs from Sears and Woolworths from the 40s to get the little details right like her hair, the shoes, dress, and stockings. I sketch completely in Photoshop CS1 using a Cintiq21UX and some custom brushes I found on line here: [link]

Once I'm happy with the sketch I move on to the background. In this case I decide to use Google Sketch-up to do the background to save some time and the get the dimensions correct. If you have never used Sketch-up I would highly recommend you go and check it out: [link] . That being said, here is my disclaimer concerning using Sketch-up. Just like anything else Sketch-up is an artistic tool but it can also become a crutch especially to those that have not learned how to draw backgrounds or gained an understanding of perspective and scale. I use Sketch-up because it is insanely faster than hand drawing a background but if my computer were to blow up tomorrow I could sit down with a pencil and paper and draw the background by hand. If you have practiced and taught yourself to draw backgrounds and want to try Sketch-up to speed up your process then by all means, please do. But, if you haven't put the man hours into learning the ins and outs of perspective, demension, and scale then please put down your mouse and pick up a pencil. If you need some help please check out the amazing book on perspective and backgrounds called Perspective For The Comic Book Artist by David Chelsea. Here's am Amazon link to help you out: [link]

I find a model I like in Sketch-up as well as some of the smaller things like the stool she is sitting on and the 40s style mixer she will have on the counter next to her. I place everything in the right spot in the model and use the zoom and rotate tool to get the background in the dimensions I will need for the piece. Once I'm happy with it I export the piece as a 2-D flat image into my photoshop and line it up with the original drawing. I use levels and the poster edge filter to turn the Sketch-up image to a simple black line image. At this point I go in and start drawing in the little details I will need to complete the layout including the salt box, cupcakes and tray, the towel, and the dog as well as the cookie dough on the floor.

Now it's time to print the image for inking. I flatten the image so all layers in Photoshop and merged together into a single image. I make sure the image is set to RGB color and go into Image>Adjust>Color Balance. I take the scale and move it all the way over towards CYAN on the top scale and all the way towards BLUE on the bottom scale. This will turn your image blue but it will still look dark. I think go into Image>Adjust>Hue and Saturation and take the lightness scale up to around 96%. This will make your image look extremely light but it will still be a bit too gray. I then go back into Image>Adjust>Color Balance and repeat the same steps with Cyan and Blue to make it look extremely light blue. The image above is darker than my actual formatted piece so you can see how it looks. If you've followed the steps correctly, your image will be light enough to be slightly visible but not at a distance from your monitor of more than 5 or 6 feet. At this point I set the size of the image to 13”X19” and print it off on my Epson Stylus R1800 photo printer for inking. Check out Step 2 for the next step in the process.

Hope you dig!

Best,
-Mark
Follow me on Twitter: [link]

Well, it is the Holiday season, and my one year anniversary on DA present to you.

(Be patient for the download, I made it nice and big so you can see it properly)

So this is a pic that I did this summer past for the Udon's Art of Capcom art book. Originally this was the image that I did the tutorial on, but in a last minute decision, it was decided that I do a tutorial for the AOC cover I did instead. [link]

If you bought the Udon's Art of Capcom book and read my tutorial in there, you will see some very big similarities in the text as i lifted almost 80% of it for that tutuorial as well.

One thing I will say about this tutorial is that if you are expecting some high tech awesome layer nonesense you will not find it here. I work as simple as possible and anything I do here you can do on your comp with either Photoshop or Photopaint.

For this image I used Corel Photopaint to colour it. This is just one style of colouring, but the base technique can be used in so many ways. Over the last 10 years of proffessional work, this is the most streamlined technique that I find myself using often.

In the end, you use as many lense flares and fancy-pants filters as you please, but this stuff is basic enough that even a beginner can benifit from it.

Hope you like it!

I will try to answer some of the questions I don't feel are answered in the text. Don't just rifle off questions without reading the text once or twice within the tutorial.

---------

Wow quite the response for this one! I can't reply to all the notes and comments, so i will say it here:

I am glad you like it and Thank you very much for the support!

What's New?
- This is now an extended version of the older V2 set, (from 1.8MB now to 32MB,) containing the brushes I use often in my day to day Photoshop drawing and painting.
- Things to note: a few brushes have been removed because I never used them due to their rather uselessness. The "Knife" brushes in particular have been removed, and replaced by "Broad Tip 1 & 2" under the Flats Set.
- A fantastic painting set "Triangle Brushes" by Joshua James has been added to the Painting section, and I've been using these on almost everything since I found them.
- Also new are a bunch of sponge / spatter brushes I've been using often as texture bases to painting. Useful!
- The Chalk brushes are also a pretty essential part of Photoshop in general, so I've added a section just for them.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

About This Set
I borrowed an organizational method here that I saw Feng Zhu use in his videos. Create numbered brushes that go at the start of each row. (Note these number brushes are not supposed to be used.) They divide the brushes into the sections seen above in the preview, that way you quickly know which section you're in while browsing in icon view. The trick, however, is that you have to resize your brush window to the correct width to place all the numbers on the left-most column.
The blank 1px brushes are merely spacers. They contain no brush data. These can always be swapped out for your own brushes you'd like to add to those sections, if you like, or duplicate them to make full rows just in case things aren't lining up evenly.

Many of the brushes in this set have been made by me, but a good number of them have also been downloaded or shared to me by friends. I don't have all of the credit information for them. I've labelled brushes in the set with proper credits to their creators as I know of them, but if you see a brush of yours in here and it isn't credited to you, let me know!

Enjoy this new set, it improves greatly on the old set while remaining easy to navigate thanks to organizing it all.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

LEGACY VERSION 2 DOWNLOAD
Still looking for the lighter weight old version? Download it at the link below!
Essental Illustration Brushes V2: [Preview] [Download]

---------------------------------------------------------------------

A NOTE ABOUT USAGE RIGHTS AND CREDITATION:
First, don't worry about it, and second, don't worry about it.
These brushes are just tools. They are not copyrighted or infringe-able. What you create with them becomes copyrighted only to yourself. This is wholly free. You do not need to credit me. You can feel free to link people to these brushes if you want, but don't feel obligated to credit me as the provider to make your work possible. I was not responsible, you and your talent is responsible.
Think of it this way: would you write a note to Utrect, Steadtler, Faber-Castell etc to ask if it's OK to use their line of pencils, pens, and markers to make your art? No, you wouldn't, and this brush set is no different. Have fun, and create!

I barely, ever, use custom weird funky brushes unless its for design purpose. I find this collection achieves exactly what I want, and haven't searched elsewhere. It's like my Holy Grail so I figured all of you digi painters could use them as well!

Now you might be like "Why such a small list?" I don't mean this in an arrogant way , but I can really achieve any feeling I want with these brushes, just get used to them, play with it and it'll work out! They did for me.

I have a run down below on what each brush is used for in a painting:

Brushes

Standard Brush: This is what I use to drop my basic colors when quickly slapping down what I want. I seldom use it for actual detailing, but if I need to block in thick patches I'll use this brush.

Detailing Painting Brush: My favorite brush next to the fur brush. This one is simply used to get those nooks and crannies. If I were to use the brush above for 25% of the painting, this would be the other 75%.

Lighting Brush You know all those lens flares, over bright lights, shiny glowing areas I do? This is the brush. Use it softly and you'll achieve a nice bloom in your lighting.

Detailing Lighting Brush For tinier spots, harder lighting areas.

Texture Brush: I use this brush mostly for pores, dabbles on the skin, bumpy surfaces, or just to give texture to skin in general. Works like a charm.

Hair Brush/Smudge Brush Pretty Self Explanatory. Do I start off painting hair with this brush? No, I use the Standard Painting Brush then I go over it with this brush to create the strands/etc. As for the smudging, this is my ideal color mixer when I need to blend tones, acts like a bristle brush and merges all those nice colors together to create a creamy feel.

Chalk Brush: I use this for clouds sometimes, smoke, or just patching in colors. Works better than I can explain.

Hard Ink Brush: This I use rarely, but when I do use it, it really helps. Usually for adding glare, or tight highlights on certian objects to make them pop. Like the girls earring.

Texture Brush # 2 : This one I use a lot to get nice pores, that sweaty look or just overall skin texture.

Cloud Brush #1-3: Used to paint clouds, nuff' said.

Abrams Lighting Brush: I love this brush. In my "INSIDE THE BEAST" image, all those lighting effects you guys talked about were used with this brush.

Speckle Brush: Used for skin again, or to dirty something up.

Debris Brush: Need to create dirt flying? Tiny bumps on a sexy leg? This is it sucka.

Fur Brush: UNF! My favorite brush. I use this for skin, fur, cloth, metal, sparks, debris, glass, anything. It's a hard shell to crack, but once you do..it's a GREAT brush.

Pore Brush: Literally my 489474th brush used for skin/pores.

Glass Brush: Used to create shattered glass, papers flying, etc.

Have fun!!

Also, all I ask is if you download them, I don't expect any credit. These are the steps I take for this style:

1) Start off Simple construction lines for her face and overall composition. 10-15 mins

2) Once the sketch is done, set it to 10% opacity and add a new layer on top of it for the clean lineart. 30 mins

3) Remove the sketch layer, add a new one underneath the lineart and throw in some flat colours, usually 60-70% dark of the local colours.

4) After deciding the light direction, start adding values to her face without focusing too much on the details. Pay great attention to the tonal values.

5) Continue to expand the value range of her face, add in the cast shadows and highlights.

6) Move on to her clothings

7) Define the reflective surface of her helmet with reflection to the affected areas.

8) Finish her bra top and complete most of the details.

9) Set the lineart in multiply mode and tint it with the surrounding local colour.

Flatten the layers and blend some harsh lines with Painter's blender - Just Add Water tool.

Add the secondary light source from the left.

Final cleanup and minor adjustments of her face - I shrinked her eyes a little with Photoshop's liquify tool.

Total time - 4 hours. Kate Austen.

I found a cool reference pic and I tried to recreate it on Painter. Considering it took me several hours, I think it's pretty decent so far.
