I am pretty stoked on this guy. And he's actually not REALLY big, I don't make really large sculpts, but he feels bigger. He's still just 3 inches tall. But there is LOTS of detail packed into him. That mane. Ugh. Ridiculous. Not to mention the wings! I made them extra strong by putting wire mesh inside them. I forgot how much work big wings are

About the technique...

I used mechanical pencil 0.3 (for all hair and some details) and 4B and 6B pencils (for the face).
When I finished all the shading, I manipulated and added the red color in photoshop using a brush (that also helped me a lot)!

Finally the last dragon the last dragon of the element series. Wisdom! This took me 4 day to make and about 30 hours. Drawing the wings was a hard job.

This old dragon knows everything in the world. He was here on earth before any other dragon. When people want to become wise like this dragon they have to do a quest. When the for fill it. The dragon grants them wisdom.

... this is today's effort. Started it this morning and have been working on it on and off all day. I was awoken and kept awake last night by the couple downstairs having a long, loud row. Sheesh. A. Why do folks have to bottle up their problems until they explode? What's wrong with talking sensibly about an issue before it becomes a problem? and B. Why do they have to go and bloody well do it so loud at 2 in the morning? Grr.

I just don't see the point in fighting.

So I wanted a nice easy no brainer picture to work on today since I was sleepy.

I used some textures for the dragons body to make it more natural.

I got it done pretty quick. It took me about 20 hours. I did the sketching with a pencil an I colored it in PS.

It's a while since I've drawn Drakhenliche... so here she is, looking kinda happy in some dead swamp that probably smells worse than she does.

It's also been way too long since I indulged in proper watercolours My scanner ate this (it hates my watercolours) so I had to lay on some filters to try and make it presentable again. The original's better.

it's almost excactly one year ago I painted my last dragon (FALL).
now it's the return of the dragon

As always the scales are painted individually and as always gave me a headache!

Dragons Lair

Enter the dragon's lair if you dare!

My aim for this picture was to paint a classic image of a powerful dragon. I thought that a red dragon would make an aggressive looking creature, and is a colour that will sit well alongside the golden treasure and dark cavern. Skeletal remains are scattered on the floor to show the fate that awaits any treasure hunters rash enough to take on this beast.

An article about how I painted this picture is published in issue 50 of Imagine FX [link] Out today in the UK and Europe and elsewhere in the world next month.

Here's the Polar. This guy gave me a hard time. Started this one as green with white fur but the fur colour overshadowed the skin colour. So I was about to get rid of the whole thing and start over but then I realized that I kind of liked the white fur and decided to change the skin colour to white as well and create a whole new creature and the result was: Polar... I also had the change the fur into a more quill featherish look.

I hope you like this one as well.

I made this image as a commission for a large poster (so, no print of this will be available). It's a custom black dragon with silver spikes/claws, dwelling in a limbonic environment where no other creature could survive...

This is probably the largest (6000x4000 px.) and most detailed piece I've done so far. I made it from scratch in Photoshop, bit by bit, shaded each and every one of the scales seperately, the rocks, etc. There's also pixel-level detail in some places. Phew, I'd say that this was the most enjoyable commission, hehe! ^.^

Sapphire Dragon - Reference

Sapphire Dragon reference, done with coloured pencil 9th December 2008. Colours slightly modified on the PC (as the skanner already tried to eat the colours up anyway, might as well try make it a bit more vivid than the original paper-version).

This is a D&D style sapphire dragon, one of the neutral gem dragons species.

Sapphires are slender, or some say very thin, in build compared to other dragons. They are more dexterous as well, albeit less strong considering muscle-power than some other dragon type of their age.
Sapphire dragons could be considered anti-social as well as quite territorial - they rather live alone in solitude, rarely seeking out any of their own kind even, preferring their vast underground lairs in the Underdark or sometimes on the Elemental Plane of Earth. They do consider the evil denizens of their region as enemies, though, directly confronting them if they threaten the dragon's own grounds.
As masters of military strategy, they enjoy strategic games and favor discussions over tactics than any small talk - known to forgive intrusions, even, if the visitor offers a game of such type (of course letting the dragon lose is not too wise).
A sapphire dragon's scales do not change colour throughout its lifetime, but are rather one shade of twinkling blue; ranging from night-dark to light blue in hue. The scales reflect any source of light, creating many tiny scintillating glints on the walls of caverns.

(Later I might write a bit more about all the gem dragons I drew thus far, but right now I'm a bit impatient for that... I'm happy enough I finally finished this babe )

okie. i nearly forgot about this until my friend mentioned it again. It was for my friend's birthday in July. ~~a DRAGON was specifically requested~~...and i wasn't gonna upload it, but hell i'm bored. LOL
