Snegurochka (Snow Maiden)

I started this one when the snow still covered the Scandinavian woods, and now it is finished only in the middle of summer.
Slow is painting when having babies
This is my personal interpretation of a classic character of Russian folklore, the Snegurochka, or Snow Maiden, daughter of Frost and Spring. Despite she's typically depicted as a merry and kind girl, I wanted to show her sadness, since the legend tells her heart will melt, and she'll die, when she will first fall in love.

Believe or not, these are school assignments. The teacher didn't really think it through when she said the subject could be anything.

The main idea was to use these techniques: pencil, ink and charcoal. And the usage of lines and surfaces.

Many Years She has Walked this Path

Her home far in the distance, a grandmother walks to the nearest village, crossing through the chilled waters of mountain rivulets, to buy some food and household supplies. Her once light-cream skin, tanned red by the high altitude sunlight and the harsh, high Himalayan climate. Early morning, biting cold, she moves slowly but with strength along dusty paths. Her life is interwoven with this dry yet beautiful land, the only world she has ever known.

On the path, she passes a weatherworn, Tibetan Buddhist chorten with mani stones, inscribed with hand carved mantras, carefully placed beside it, as a form of prayer.

In the high mountain village, the old woman will probably visit some friends for a while, enjoying some nun chiya, (hot tea combined with salt, butter, placed in a wooden churn, then churned vigorously by hand before serving the tea in small bowls or cups), and tsampa (roasted flour, usually barley, sometimes wheat), a favourite food combination of the people in this region, before her long walk home.

Near the village of Kagbeni, Mustang, looking towards the path that leads to the medieval, walled city of Lo Manthang, the ancient capital of the region. The province of Mustang (the "u" is pronounced similar to the "u" in "put"), formerly the Kingdom of Lo, is in North-Central Nepal, on the Tibetan plateau.

In an area of Nepal known as being in the "rain shadow" of the Himalayas, Mustang receives little rain and is almost arid. The streams you see flowing in the background of this scene are actually part of the wide, yet parched, Kali Gandaki river, flowing from it's source, the Nhubine Himal Glacier, at the border with Tibet. In lower elevations, the Kali Gandaki becomes a full, fast flowing river, with wild rapids, eventually joining with the sacred river, Ganges, in India.

Tibetan Buddhism is the main religion of Mustang.

"Nun chiya", literally means salt tea in the Nepali language.

Hey Guys,

So Ive been working on a new hard surface DVD with Eat3d covering techniques in Zbrush R2.

For the character I took an existing female character, modified the proportions and face, and then designed the armor on top of that.

The DVD covers concepting, final model, detailing, cloth sim, rendering with vray, and tweaking in Photoshop. Everything is in Zbrush except for cloth sim and rendering clays.

The fall is here. For me, the change of season away from the summer is probably the worst thing that happens every year. I dropped by downtown for the sunrise on my way to hiking today. There was some interesting fog blowing across the harbor.

Location: Stanley Park, Vancouver, Beautiful British Columbia, Canada.
Equipment: Nikon D90 + Tokina 11-16mm + Tiffen Polarizer.
Technique: Photomatix Pro 4.1 and Photoshop CS5 from 3 RAWs shot in 1.5 EV intervals.
