_{I made this painting in the first day of workshop that I gave in Rome last March.
It was really quick, it took me only 20 minutes. While I was painting I explained what I already said during the past hours of workshop.. so, from theory to practice! it was funny thanks again to all the guys that attended my little lessons.

A lot of people ask me about the role and process of being a concept artist. Here is an example of what is often times expected: the 'paintover.' Basically you are given a screenshot of a 3d scene and are tasked with enhancing it by digitally painting over it. There are many reasons for this. For one, it allows the art director/producers to see a scene as it might end up on the players screen. They can then make the decision to change things further, or give it to the environment artist to implement the 'new look.' Another reason is time. It's much quicker for a concept artist to paint over one still shot than have the environment artist build it all in 3d in a timely manner. But the most important reason is: MONEY! By doing this you are saving the client money! As I mentioned, it's much cheaper and faster for a concept artist to paint a scene than to have a 3d artist build a 'finished' scene. This is why the role of a concept artist is so important. You have to impress a lot of people up front with your vision, as that is what the client has to envision the final product. Good concept art carries through the entire project( whether it's a game, film, tv show etc) and needs to communicate a solid and clear idea. Feel free to ask more questions below and I'll do my best to anser them!

This flaring of aurora came about so fast I didnt have time to go anywhere, could barely get out the camera fast enough, had to take this 80 meters from where I live, so excuse the few ambient lights in the distance and the airport fence.

I checked this agains the time and its power was 110 gw, if you want that in more common terms, imagine a car with 1.35 million horsepowers.

This was captured at Mannes with a view over the fjord to Steinsvika to the left and Maurnes to the right.
Over a couple of days in March the northen lights had a very blue tone to it, which I haven't seen earlier in the season.

Living under an authoritarian regime is not fun. Extensive censorship meant no Facebook, no Youtube, and no porn.

Fortunately for Vance, being a hacker makes scaling the Great Firewall a walk in the park. With the free web at his fingertips, Vance should be happy but he’s not. Maybe there’s something missing in his life that porn just cannot replace.

Maybe it’s a girlfriend.

So it’s not weird at all to hack into the university to assign himself a hot female roommate, right? That’s just taking fate into your own hands, or something along those lines, right?

Too bad fate had other plans in mind and Vance is dragged into a crazy conspiracy to overthrow the government by his most-definitely-not-female roommate.

College is meant to be exciting, but not this exciting. Between failed dates, failed grades, and maybe not quite failed hacks, Vance will slowly come to question the morality of his actions and the true price of freedom.

Is this what democracy looks like?

I shot this in 2010 when I first decided to start on my 2nd photobook. Which, of course, went on permanent hiatus because, life. Since I hope to compile the pieces I'm putting out for Motherland Chronicles as a new book now, I figure it'd be apt to add this to the collection.

I'm secretly quite impressed with myself for not posting this for so long, it's one of my favorite shoots, but I guess the process of a difficult selection helped, there were so many beautiful pictures from this set.

Created for the game Legend of the Cryptids. The brief called for a character called Aurora who is the younger sister of Helios the sun god. She is a bringer of light, understanding and growth. In this advanced version of the character she has come down to end the war. While the brief didn't mention a bow I thought it would be a fitting weapon for a sun goddess.

Sai Brushes

A few brush settings I made for Paint Tool SAI. BIG FILE!!

All the Inking bushes are made from creating a new "Pencil"

All the Paint brushes are made from creating a new "Brush"

The Eraser is made from creating a new "Eraser"

A few side-note tips:

For the "Painterly" brushes keep the density low (20%) to get good blending and high (80%) for details.

If you want the lines to be super smooth reduce the noise, paper and spread to 0

I set my default line Smoothing to 9. Its right next to the Horizontal Flip just under Help/Config.

The Real Eraser works really well when sketching. It doesnt rub everything away in an instant.

For those like me who get annoyed by that digital blob/flick at the end of brush strokes you can kind of remedy this by going to Help/Config> Options> Tablet> In the Click Detection Pressure box set the number to 10% or higher.

Also in the Tools Tab in Options tab you might want to change the Eye Dropper Colour Source to canvas so you dont have to switch layers to pick colours all the time when painting.

There are quite a few versions of Sai out there with different Tabs and Texture Packs so ask if you get lost or need help. Just be patient with me.

More Fisheye Placebo promotional art!

This one features some silly programmer graffiti despite the serious atmosphere.

The pigeons with IPoAC (IP over Avian Carriers) is a proposal to carry Internet Protocol (IP) traffic by birds such as homing pigeons as a part of an April fool’s joke.

The 3 square icons next to it says eat, sleep, code.

The ones on the stairs refers to another April fool’s joke that created Error 418. Like Error 404, which means “Not Found”, Error 418 means “I’m a teapot”.

The rest of the graffiti are various words and symbols related to the story.

Ch0 of Fisheye Placebo will hopefully be released around March…maybe…
