My latest ballpoint pen art in progress

There is my biggest and most challenging ballpoint pen art project I've planed to do so far.

My intention is to draw with my ballpoint pens a composition of not 1 or 8 or 15 portraits ... but 23 ! 23 portraits of my son on the same A1 size picture to retrace his first year from his birth.

23rd step : OK, I decided to spend my week-ends evening to finish this project that is in progress since a bit to long.

Using a translator:

After more than 50 hours spent on this drawing concludes. Drawing made in order to study anatomy and new textures. Almost never drawing the whole body, but this was an exception, I do not have much practice with the human body descidir then draw it.

I love the reference for this piece, so had to draw it. It took 37hrs on Bristol board extra smooth, using mechanical pencil B2 + H2 to B4 pencils, tissues and erasure.

I had real fun with the jumper and sand!! LOL

I've decided to re-scan this image as the first didn't do the original justice. Still need to get a A3 scanner though, as you can see the link lines. This scan actually shows up more errors than the first, but i guess i can live with that.

This is not the usual kind of picture you usually see of JLo. it's the first i've completed in full detail. Although it took a long time, it turned out well. hope you like it?

JLo took 21 hours, on A3 200grm paper, using H2-B9 graphite pencils, kneadable rubber, tissue, blending stick.

I've decided to re-scan this image as the first didn't do the original justice. Hope you don't mind, it's now as close to the original as i can get it.

Olivia Wilde, best-known as Thriteen in House M.D., is the second of the pretty women I mentioned I'd draw some time ago. I came across the reference picture ages ago and fell in love with Olivia's eyes here. I decided I would draw it one day. One day, when I feel I have guts to do it. So, the Wild[e] revelation happened in the end of May
I finished her portrait yesterday but couldn't post it due to the severe thunderstorm I was afraid to turn the PC on, lol. And I've just realized that I posted my previous portrait of Olivia EXACTLY one year ago. It wasn't intentionally, like an anniversary or something. Mysterious things happen!

_{About the drawing}

In the beginning I really liked the process of creating this portrait. I was happy with her face, with the upper part of background, the right part of the hat... Later it got worse .__. The hair, which isn't even, the left side of the hat, and... worst of all... the GODDAMN BLADES OF GRASS I was close to give up and hide under my bed for the rest of my life.
But I didn't do it, as you can see. Otherwise I'd not have been typing this, because I'd have been unable to use the keyboard while laying flat on the floor
Oh, I added some extra blades of grass No blending as always.

So he asked me to draw her for him, and this is the result.

This is one of the first drawings I have made with more than one person in it.
From the left is Tuco Salamanca played by Raymond Cruz, Walter White played by Bryan Cranston and Jesse Pinkman played by Aaron Paul.

This is probably the most difficult drawing I have made, mostly because I had to draw three faces on 5.7 x 5.7 inches paper, and I also really struggled to draw the blurred effect on Walters face.

I used about 8-10 hours to create this drawing.
I used a 4B and 6H pencil, an eraser, blending stump and tissue for blending.

Hello I want to present you Mr. Cooper. Man, whose music and performance I fell in love with. i mean of course I knew some songs like 'Poison' or 'Welcome to My Nightmare' and my favourite 'Nothing's Free' for months for years now... Other thing that I like about h im is that he created stage and comic character called 'Alice Cooper' and calls it his alter ego.

Anyway this drawing took me some time. It wasn't this hard. The hardest thing to draw was his necklace and eyes or better, make up around them. I really enjoyed it, I like drawing elder people, it's a challenge.

The reference photo really captured his personality, so I tried to achieve the same effect in my drawing.
I made this drawing nearly half a year ago, I am still quite happy with it, especially the eyes.

I am a huge fan of Morgan Freeman. Amazing actor, awesome voice and he narrates and hosts one of my favorite shows, Through the Wormhole. When I found out he shared the same passion for astrophysics my respect and love for this man tripled without a fuss. I couldn't have been more proud to add this to my portfolio and used him for my video tutorials on drawing with charcoal.

I really wanted to draw him for a long time, and finally managed to finish it over the weekend. It was fun trying to draw the skin details and his beard, as it was a challenge to draw every hair.

8 guys, 8 different personalities, 8 different voices, 8 different bands, 8 different faces of rock.
They give/used to give me eargasms every time I listen[ed] to the music they create with their bands. Each of them enchanted me with his voice at some point of my life. I'm aware that some of them are criticised/play worse music now, but... I don't care, they had a huge impact on my music taste. 4 of them come from U.S., 2 from Canada, 1 from RPA and 1 from U.K. I definitely love ~English music :> I've seen 3 of them live: Jared twice, Anthony once and Brian once. I was supposed to go to Billy Talent show a few days ago, but the concert had been canceled

Most of these photos aren't up-to-day [Kurt's especially... ], but it was bloody hard to find the photos that would fit, especially the sitting ones. It took me the entire day to find what I was looking for, and I'm still not satisfied.
Sully, Brian, Shaun and Chad - why so serious? Well, I didn't want to create too sad a drawing, thus I exchanged the faces of Jared and Anthony - the bodies are theirs, but the reference photos for their faces are different from the original pictures.

I've been thinking about portraying Kurt from a different photo, 'cause his eyes aren't visible [as the rest of the vocalists], but as he's not among the living anymore, may he wear his cool glasses in order to stand out. I know some time ago I was threatening I would never draw Jared again. So, this is the last time for real.

_{About the drawing itself}

This gave me a bunch of severe headaches!
First of all, the span of creating this drawing was unbelievable and unbearable for me: I started in July 2012, on Dec 31st, 2012 it was finished in 99%. Then I had a break in January [examsexamsexams]; in February I discovered that the feet of standing guys - the very last thing that left to draw - wouldn't fit! So I had to erase all area below the coach and drew another part of the coach instead. MADNESS. Obviously the paper started to misbehave.
It also acted oddly when I was shading the background, it became so uneven that I decided to blend it with the blending stump.

Special thanks go to Sully and Shaun for their frigging tattoos; to Kurt for his fancy coat; to Jared, Anthony and Ben for their not complicated at all facial expressions and to Shaun for his checked shirt. You made drawing this group portrait far easier!

I tried to adjust their heights as well. The tallest guy is Shaun [188cm], but he's sitting. The next tallest guy is Chad [185cm], therefore he is the biggest in the upper row. Kurt and Anthony = 175cm, whereas Ben is 170cm. Sully and Brian measures the least [165 & 168... ], but they're sitting, so good for them Jared with 177cm is in the middle of all these guys.

It was supposed to look different. It's funny how we imagine an outcome of creating process and then it turns out completely different
It's the first drawing posted this year, the first after 2 months of not posting anything... so I hope you like it!

Why another eye? God there are many reasons..

I just love to draw them and I go back to them after each major work, its a bit like cleaning my pallet-my mind from one project to the next, it also let me know that Im improving as an observer and draughtsman. My interest is the aging skin and the breadth of textures on the human face giving hints to a life lived.

Also I am drawing three eyes for a very important series of exhibits in 2013, this is the first of the three all are 16 x 16 which is very large. They will also answer a host of questions on drawing in this kind of scale for my plan is to draw a 72x 72 face.

I used forty reference photos and a mirror to draw this image taking about 200 hours, although the time element is overrated, it takes what it takes. Thank you to Mr. Larry Butcher for agreeing to let me age you a bit.

I got a bit tired of Photoshop and so I decided to do this one with the pencil. I did not touch the pencil since i started with photoshop ( stencils for tattoos dont count )

It was very refreshing to draw on paper again. At the same time i feel how much i have improved since the last time.

I had horrible reference photos, so that was the best i could do with it

10 years ago, I drew this same image in graphite when I was just starting to figure out how to draw and shade and everything. When I heard Hudson Leick would be attending OzComicCon, I immediately started redrawing it in charcoal. I took it to the Con and had Hudson autograph it in person, which was simply an AMAZING experience. In those 10 years I can see how I've improved - my attention to detail is far greater, my understanding of shading has come a long way, and I'm really proud of how it turned out. This is less of a tutorial, and more of a reference.

This whole colour palette thing is really nothing I have the
authority to advise people on. I've never studied colour theory.
Whatever I know, I've only learnt through observation,
experimentation, and trial and error. Emphasis on the error.

It's one thing knowing colour theory, and another thing entirely knowing
how you should apply it, especially in something like realism,
where you want something to look real, AND you want it to please the eye.
Not to mention a traditional medium whose pigments blend in unexpected ways.

“The Simplicity of Silence” Pencil on Board, 45” x 80”

Normally one puts their work on a gallery wall and the work needs to carry the power to speak to the viewer, if it’s successful the work will ignite the viewer’s imagination and art is made. The only hint the artist gives is the title in this case “The Simplicity of Silence”.

Yet at DA we learn, we teach, we read, and art is discussed, and this having been a wip I’ll try and go over what has turned from a perceived 500 hour project to more than 1800 hours and why it was worth it.
Ever since getting out of art school years ago, I suspected that talent was a farce, sure there exceptions Mozart, Picasso, Joe Bonamassa and a few others but these are prodigies more so than “talented” people. For the rest of us “talent” is more an unstoppable interest and drive, a work ethic that at times seem almost obsessive. Once this practice gives you a foundation to work on, ideas and concepts make up the rest and none of this comes easy. When my students complain about their art assignments all have to say is; “suck it up, art is hard, get it done”. Yet time put into an individual project doesn’t mean 1800 hours-that alone has nothing to do with the success of a work. Kathe Kollwitz could do with a line in a very short time what 99% of people could never do but it took years of observation and repetitive technical study to get there. Personally I have to spend a lot of time on my work to say it in my way; in a nut-shell my fascination is with the complexities of nature, of the human face of a broken light bulb and so on. Simplification is not an interest nor do I feel that I have to avoid it when see a need for it. I go about my work in a simple formula, composition, concept, technique… success is never guaranteed for the viewer has to be moved to fill the artistic circle, after all art is still a form of communication.

“The Simplicity of Silence” was at times horrendously repetitive, I would sit at the drawing board almost on the verge of hanging it up, but I know at these time I have to rise to the occasion and work thought it. I took no short cuts, I stuck to every branch if they heighted the vision and left out only the ones that took away from the flow. I have experienced every snow flake every twig and branch every shadow and highlight this is a journey that taking a photo could never give me. Because of this hyper-involvement I hope to share my visions with the viewer in a way that a photo cannot do. This obsessive act translates to the viewer in a complete different manner. I’m not interested so much in any particular “ism”, photorealism or hyper-realism per say, but I am interested to show the viewer just how I see my world. Technicality I used about one hundred photos as references, I used real branches and twigs that I had in my studio and went to the original place many time although that changes daily, winter turned to spring, to summer to fall and so on. What I do not want to do is just copy a photo but translate and reinvent it with my knowledge, imagination and artistic language, the photo is only a map, finding the treasure is within me.

I want to thank all who have commented on this long wip, I thank you for the question and keeping the discussion going. My hope is that it inspired people the way you all inspire me.

No, I do not fake my own art.

This is not really a tutorial as much as it's to teach people to not be too naive when it comes to art. There are people who do this! This is of course only one way of doing it, I'm sure there are plenty.

If you do fake your art I have absolutely no respect for you.

Fake art - why care and what to look forI posted this last week for anyone looking for help to spot fake art. This is not law, if you don't care, feel free to move on. But if you do care that there are fakers out there, then maybe this could be of some use to you too. We have a serial faker on the loose on dA today so it sparked this little lot once more.

I've drawn Luke Pasqualino several times, but can never seem to get
his skin tone right. I either make it pinker than it should be, to look
nice with the blue (which I'm addicted to using), or I make it lifelike,
so it's too yellow to look good with the blue. But this time it's more or
less perfect. For once! I've made a few mistakes in this drawing,
but I'm happy to say the skin tone is not one of them.

Thanks to *DiiaR, who gave me vital tips on the colour scheme.
And it's her birthday! So this is dedicated to her.

_{I pulled the reference photo out of a magazine years ago,
& patiently waited until I was skilled enough to do it justice
in a drawing.

(Okay. Not THAT patiently. I tried drawing it in graphite
once, because I knew with colour I couldn't capture the
details... but I didn't get very far. It didn't look right in
monotone at all.)

Last year I was nil by mouth for 10 weeks (I was fed
through an NG tube) and it was the most miserable time of
my entire life. I never would have believed how integral
eating is to emotional well-being.

So now I know. I want to draw more food.
...and also eat more food.

Edit: lol, I don't have an eating disorder. I have Crohn's
disease. I was nil by mouth on doctor's orders, even though
I desperately wanted to eat.

_{I started this before the "Michael Sword" revelation,
so now it's even more relevant. Normally I think portraying a
character as an angel is totally clichéd, but the Winchesters
have always had that religion/faith connection, as well as
protecting people, often without their knowledge or thanks.

Since I decided to make posters out of this one, I edited it
in photoshop to fill in the black expanses, just in case my
shading didn't quite cut it. This is the only time I've done
that! I normally retouch graphite drawings to fix whatever
the scanner's butchered, but I don't paint over my shading.
Just so you know.

It's done.

45 hours over 5 months. My first non-portrait drawing. A study of light, glass, and reflections.

I'm really pleased with the turnout. Sure, there are parts I know I could have improved, but still. I'm really happy.

However, I still can't really look at it right now. In a few days I'll really evaluate it. Right now I'm just...done.

Materials: [link] (yeah, I used every pencil from 9B to 9H...and yeah, I blended this piece into oblivion...)
Size: 7"x10" (pretty small...translates to over half an hour per SQUARE INCH!!)

I decided not to put a frame on the digital image (which sucks, by the way...bad contrast and grainy quality...I'll try to get a better one; I did all I could to adjust the contrast, but it's still not as good as the original). It just didn't feel right. Maybe because it's not a portrait. Maybe because I felt the frame was tacky.

Still working on the title. I'll get back to you.

SO. This piece is actually for sale. Any takers? I'll be submitting it to the Scholastic Art Competition, so I may not be able to deliver it for a while.

All WIPs in scraps.

Don't know what else to say. I feel like I should say more.

Edit: This piece was selected as a American Visions Award Nominee (one of five in the state) on the regional level of the'08 Scholastic Art Competition. While it didn't win the national award, it did win a Gold Key on the national level of the competition.

It was also selected in September to be in an exhibit of about 100 pieces that will go on display in the President's Committee in Washington, D.C., where it will be on display from September '08 through August '09.

It was also chosen to be in Images, my high school's literary arts magazine.

This piece was displayed in a local coffee shop and at my high school in 2009 and 2010.

It was displayed in two student art shows in the spring of 2010.
