I get asked a lot for tips and such for aspiring artists. Which makes me laugh, because i still consider myself one of the fold, lol. ANYWAY, my first response is always to never "settle" with your art. If you're not happy, do what you need to do, learn what you need to learn, to fix it.

So i don't sound like a hypocrite, I figured i'd show my own concept in action. On the left, a piece i did almost 2 years ago exactly, and i remember being pretty satisfied with it. Now, i look at it and go "ew". You recognize the one on the right. 2 years from now, i fully expect me to look at the newest, and go WTF was i thinking? Always be ready and willing to learn folks. It's a lot of work, but it pays off.

This was for Onslaught, a deck that was pure hell for artists and art director alike. Dana Knutson was the AD for that project and a finer AD you'll be hard-pressed to find. The man still commands enormous loyalty from us freelancer-types. Anyway, what was I talking about? Ah yes, hell. My particular hell was nine cards in 13 days. Still haven't topped that, though one day I may be stupid enough to try. It beat the tar out of me. I'm no speed demon, like some of you young whipper-snappers out there.

Je voulais donner une ambiance d'été pour me réchauffer en dessinant car j'ai un peu froid depuis que j'ai décidé de me balader torse nu pour apporter du soutien aux militantes des Femens.

C'est fou comme mon corps est influençable au sujet que je dessine, j'ai tendance à peindre des couleurs chaudes pour ne pas avoir trop froid en dessinant car j'ai déjà attrapé un gros rhume en illustrant un igloo alors que c'était la canicule dehors. Ou alors le problème venait de la climatisation que Hikarion avait décidé de réparer lui même, elle s'était mise à projeter des pics de glaces rafraichissants mais douloureux. Je commence à douter des compétence de réparateur d'Hikarion depuis que mon téléphone est devenu un four micro-onde quand il à voulu le bidouiller pour pirater un réseau bancaire. Au moins ça me réchauffe les oreilles même si elles grossissent comme des vuvuzelas.

Vous remarquerez que je crédite désormais mon site sur mes illustrations, car lors d'un brief avec un client, ce dernier m'a montré des images références pour un projet et un de mes dessin en faisait partie... Mon collaborateur avait trouvé l'image sur le site Ffffound, site qui s'était bien abstenu de me créditer comme auteur. J'ai ensuite effectué une recherche sur Google avec certains de mes dessins et j'ai eu la surprise de les retrouver sur de nombreux blogs et agrégateurs d'images qui ne me mentionnait évidement pas comme auteur. Donc ne voyez pas ces mentions au bas des images comme une pub abusive, mais une marque de paternité de mon illustration.

Vampirella Pin-Up Inks

Stephen is a phenominal artist and made the spectacular pencils of Vampirella...

I don't know what insanity possessed me to ink this...Stephen's lines and detail are fantastic! I don't think justice was done by me, but I definitely pushed myself to step up to this.
I chose to leave the shadowing on her skin to a minimal compared to the original pencils...I wanted her to stand out against the raw texture of the surrounding elements.
Also, I have been watching some of Jonathon Glapion's videos and thought I would attempt my first splatter...both black and white! Too much fun and hand cramping went into this one...hope you like

IJ 4 Painting Tutorial

Early this year I was charged with a commission to design and produce a limited edition release poster for Indiana Jones 4. I commenced work well before the details of the movie had been released and like almost all the people working within the LucasFilm/Indy machine, I was not privy to all the plot details especially the characters and their relationships. Even the name of the movie at that stage was unknown and more importantly, the existence of the crystal skull was considered top secret.

I decided to keep my layout simple devoid of most characters -because I knew that the brilliant Drew Struzan, would be working them all into his two poster interpretations. At that stage the relationship between Indy and Mutt was also unconfirmed, but I was strongly of the opinion that they would turn out to be father and son, so I concentrated on their mentor and student relationship for the composition. In confidence, I DID know of the existence of the skull but knowing that it was especially secret, I opted to include it in a way that was more abstract rather than literal.

I wanted to create an uncluttered piece that paid homage to the simplicity of Richard Amsels original Raiders poster. The challenge was to source a good reference image of Harrison from LucasFilm where he didnt look TOO haggard the result was a hi-res but slightly soft shot of him that captured the heroic expression I was looking for..

Top three images:
After working through a number of rough concepts, I put down the final layout on sheet of acid free paper, working in pencil. I felt the composition would benefit from the inclusion of a Mayan style motif and the circular carvings worked well for the intimacy of my composition.

I prefer to work on MDF board because, not only is it a firm base, but I really like its inherent color especially when varnished. Using a piece roughly 34 x 25 inches in size I transferred the layout to the board using traditional pencil. The next step was to lay down a wash of general color that would assist me in determining the deeper tones and the underpainted variations.

I chose to use a very limited pallet of colors for this piece (see the list at the foot of this tutorial) and I use Acrylics by choice.

Second line images:
I dislike a clean surface to paint on and in an attempt to drop in a little texture, I liberally splashed the surface of the entire board with drops of watered down paint. NB. I tend to do this only AFTER I have laid out the underpaint because if you do it earlier its almost impossible to see the pencil line work through the spots.

Using a combination of colors from my limited pallet, I started working on Harrisons face, his chest and his shirt laying down the initial paint application as a wash. Working with progressively thicker paint, I also worked on his hat so that I could pull Harrisons face out of the composition.

Third line images:
I continued to lay down the paint in progressively thicker layers and I also started to work colored pencil lines into the painting - to enhance some areas of color and to define edges of some shapes. I use a combination of Prisma Color, Faber Castell and Derwent pencils for this. I briefly considered including highlights on his eyeballs (left hand image), but ultimately decided against doing so because in my mind it looked wrong. I felt that Ford's likeness was "off" so I reworked his face again and in order to balance the layout, I worked on the skull and the light areas around Mutts face. I also added flames around the side of Indys head.

Fourth line images:
I was really struggling with Fords likeness at this stage so I slightly altered his right hand cheek to get the light to fall properly. His nose, I made a little more lopsided and I reworked his eyes extensively. I changed the flames because the first attempt looked like I had stolen them from the side of a Pontiac Firebird. Shia le Bouffs face was coming together but I kept it smoother and less cluttered than the rugged treatment of Fords.

Finally, I enhanced the red and yellow at the bottom of the composition to lift the Soviet symbol and to bring weight to the bottom of the painting all the while, I continued to work over the entire surface with colored pencils to create the looseness and energy I prefer to employ on my work.

Bottom Line:
The finished painting was finally varnished and scanned and Photoshop was used to clean up the edges and to lay in the Logo and text.

In late 2009, publisher Don Shay, commissioned me to paint a portrait of Visual Effects wizard Phil Tippett for the cover of CINEFEX - [link]

The March 2010 edition of the magazine carries an in-depth editorial on Tippett along with a feature on Tippett Studio's 25 Anniversary and even though this highly regarded magazine has never featured an illustration on its cover before, Don kindly granted me an enormous amount of freedom with the design.

CINEFEX is unique in the way that its published because it comes with two cover versions: a) a cover without the Barcode Strip and text banner for individuals who are subscribers to the magazine and b), a cover version including the Barcode and text banner for in-store distribution. This unusual configuration meant that I needed to design a piece that not only featured all the the characters and movies Don and I thought would be appropriate, but I also needed to come up with a finished painting that served three purposes: 1) A painting that could stand on its own, 2) Artwork that looked perfectly normal with only the "CINEFEX" title covering part of it and 3), an illustration that could also have a big barcode and the text bar included - without looking cramped or compromised.

Top Row:
After the usual process of working through a number of rough concepts, I put down the final layout on sheet of acid free paper, making sure to include the characters Don and I had agreed on. I scanned the final concept and marked each character so we could be sure I had not forgotten anything and then once that was done, I made a mockup of the complete cover so he could see how I intended to solve the issue of text and Barcode overlays.

Second Row:
My preferred painting surface is a sheet of MDF board because, not only is it a firm base, but I really like the board's warm, rich color. Using a piece roughly 24 x 21 inches in size I transferred the layout to the board using traditional pencil followed soon thereafter, by the application of a tonal wash (I use Acrylic paints by choice) which gave me a good idea of where the deeper tones and punctuation points were going to sit in the composition. With Tippett's face in the middle, I decided to play the left off against the right by making half of the illustration red and the other half blue so, once I had settled on the tonal values, I used a wash of Napthol Red Light behind Phil's head and an Ultramarine blue wash over the remainder of the board.

Third Row:
I then started blocking in the flesh tones all the while keeping in mind that I wanted to feature a rich yellow and red slab of light bouncing off his left temple. From there, keen to get some form into his face, I used a mix of red, yellow and light blue's - laid down in progressively thicker washes - that was to serve as the foundation over which I would apply my colored pencil (I use a combination of Prisma Color, Faber Castell and Derwent pencils for this purpose). Once his face had a reasonable amount of form, I started working clockwise around his head starting with the ATAT walker from Empire Strikes Back followed by the T-Rex animatic model used in Jurassic Park. Because of the predominantly blue pallet I used a mix of Ultramarine blue, Aqua and Colony Blue to build up the detail.

Fourth Row:
The creature from Starship Troopers afforded me the opportunity to start shifting the blue pallet towards the more vibrant reds and here, I opted for tans, greens and browns for my paint. I purposefully placed a 'bar' under the character so that it could act as a neutral backdrop for when the cover needed to feature the text banner and the little mouse - Templeton - was also positioned in such a way that his head would be able to peek over the text box. The vicious Goblin from Spiderwick Chronicles needed a cloud of explosive gas around his feet and legs and because I don't use an airbrush I built the cloud up using layers of paint and softening the edges by dabbing the paint with an absorbent paper towel. For added texture, I used paint splatter and pencil.

Fifth Row:
Draco from Dragonheart and ED-209 from Robocop finished the surround and as I did with the Goblin (I had to make space for the Barcode block), I dropped the head of ED-209 so that the robot looked out from under the CINEFEX title banner. I then went back over the entire composition lifting tonal areas and adding detail with paint, paint splatter and carefully applied pencil strokes.

Bottom Row:
The painting was contact scanned and I used the CINEFEX cover template to drop in the artwork for Don's consideration and once the official cover was finalized, Don sent me a reference copy with a light blue CINEFEX logo on the top left hand corner.

Paint colors used: Ultramarine Blue, Aqua, Colony Blue, Titanium White, Carbon Black, Cadmium Yellow Medium, Napels Yellow Medium, Napthol Crimson Light, Cadmium Scarlet

Pencil colors used: Ultramarine, Kingfisher Blue, Light Blue, Indigo Dark Flesh, Deco Peach, Venetian Red, Poppy Red, Terracotta, Golden Brown, Burnt Umber, Black, White

This is my personal Copic Marker Color Chart.

I own the Copic Sketch and Ciao but not all the available 334 colors (I own 229)
I marked the colors I use most and like a lot with a pink heart because it was requested a few times - so this is my answer ^^ but I think I like a lot more colors than just these.. it was hard to decide If you want to buy markers don't buy any of these set - I think they don't fit together well. Start with Copic Ciao they are cheaper and available in 144 colors. The first letters show you the color family. The first number stands for the saturation and the second for how light the marker is within that saturation group.

Please keep in mind that the colors on the monitor look a bit different from the original ones (depending on your settings) and can look on other papers different too. I used "Schoellershammer Markerpaper"
