Something so beautiful about stars that prevail above light pollution. Drove out west of Omaha this evening to watch for auroras. Never got any, only ended up hearing some coyotes and getting rather cold. Figures, the one time I'm actually prepared for them to happen, they don't happen

Witness the power of nature...

The Mapleton Monster. The unstoppable supercell. We couldn't stop shooting this thing even ater we had left it and begun the drive home. A set of three training supercells developed into a squall line across northeast Iowa as we headed back to Omaha. Each individual updraft was incredibly electrically active, especially the lead one. Whenever there was a flash of lightning, you could still make out the storm's structural features despite the fact we were miles and miles away You can see several different levels of inflow on the right side. You can tell how smooth that "stack of plates" is! Too bad we didn't get that kind of structure during the daytime My favorite part, though, is how the crunchy convective updraft above was frozen in time in this image. It's really tough to get crisp storm photos at night, but this one worked out perfectly. Now I'm just kicking myself for not shooting in RAW and doing a timelapse!

Random shot from September 2010 while driving through Kansas. Conditions were abnormally dry, so it was easy for the gusty winds (if you live in Kansas, you know exactly what I'm talking about) to kick up dirt in cultivated fields A grainy shot, but I wasn't going for something sleek, modern, and smooth.

Unfortunately dA doesn't do this image any justice, but I wasn't going to upload the full-res 10206px 210MB image on the web, that would be painfully slow with bad consequences with art thieves. I am thinking about having this printed rather large for my exhibition, which will turn out amazingly life-like on metallic gloss paper! I'll be sure to take a photo for those of you who cannot visit the exhibition when it's open.

Sunrise this morning at Seven Mile Beach, South Coast NSW.

It's rare for me to be up in time to catch a sunrise, but for some reason I woke up early this morning and decided to head to my local beach to capture the dawn. It's autumn here in Australia now, but the waters of the Pacific are still warm and the surf is the best at this time of year.

The ability to stitch panoramic images is definitely a huge asset when it comes to storm photography. Luckily, today, this no longer has to be done by hand, but can be nearly seamlessly merged in programs like Photoshop CS5 and even free programs like Microsoft ICE. There was just no way to capture all of this storm in one image. Glad I took this panorama when I did, because by the next time we had a chance to stop, the golden light was almost completely gone.

I'll get a full account for this chase up later on my Tumblr page under the 2011 Accounts section.

With that being said... enjoy this ridiculous storm panorama!
