This tutorial is meant for and was created with Photoshop.

The difficulty level may lean more towards intermediate, but if you a beginner, please don't hesitate to try it all the same. You just need a basic understanding of the program and the process of photo manipulation.

Photoshop has some great features (especially in the newer versions) that will help you blend images and stitch them together, but as with most automated things, they have their limits. I'm going to show you a few automated features, such as "Align Images", ""Blend Images", "Photomerge" and "Content Aware Fill" as well as ways to do those things manually and how to fix their shortcomings, such as spots that are off using the Patch and Clone Stamp Tools for example.}

This is my very first tutorial...and I think its 100% proof that I actually have no idea what Im doing in photoshop, so if Im taking the absolute longest hardest way of doing this; please don't laugh I really hope you are able to follow it I did the tutorial with the background turned off and a plain black layer in its place... the colors do look different in the tutorial then on my finial piece because of the layer setting. The tutorial is to show you what settings I used and how I made this and I found that the original background got in the way. So when you are finished make sure you have these layers above another background, as the lighting will look much better

If you do use this tutorial, please let me know... I would love to see what you create and fave it

This is a Walkthrough for my image The Cathedral which can be found at my Art Account.

Please note: this is a walkthrough - it's not meant to teach you how to reproduce the image. It's meant to show you how I work, which techniques I use, what my thinking process was and ultimately how I arrived at the end result. I want to help you use Photoshop to make your visions come to life, not to hold your hand while you do nothing but repeat the steps. I hope you can appreciate and respect the difference!

Turorial: Sepia-style

^{I will be using Photoshop CS2 for this tutorial.

1. Go to image > mode > greyscale to make the photo black and white. Don't just desaturate it.

Now go to image > mode > rgb colour, because you'll be adding colour later.

2. Go to layer > new adjustment layer > curves, make sure the channel is set to "rgb", and click anywhere on the grid. Fill this in:

Input: 39

Output: 27

Now click somewhere else on the grid:

Input: 114

Output: 135

Now click somewhere else on the grid, for the last time:

Input: 200

Output: 218

3. Go to layer > new adjustment layer > selective colour, select "relative" and fill this in:

Whites: -18, -12, +7, -7

Neutrals: +25, +4, +9, -15

Blacks: -5, -7, -11, +2

4. Go to layer > new adjustment layer > colour balance, check "preserve luminosity" and fill this in:

Shadows: +7, -7, -11

Midtones: +34, +18, +21

Highlights: 0, 0, 0

Now merge the layers and you're done!

Tutorial: Blue-Red Greyscale

^{I will be using Photoshop CS2 for this tutorial.

TO USE THIS AS AN ACTION, CLICK "DOWNLOAD".

1. Go to image > mode > greyscale, to convert your image to black and white. now go to image > mode > RGB colour, as you'll need to add colours later.

(Don't just desaturate it, it reduces image quality!)

2. Duplicate your background layer and set it to screen at 40%.

3. Go to layer > new fill layer > solid colour, type in #2F466C and click OK. Set that layer to soft light at 100% opcaity.

4. Do the same as above, but type #360D0D in instead. Set that layer to lighten at 100% opacity.

5. Duplicate your background layer again, and drag it to the top. Set it to screen at 50%.

6. Go to layer > new adjustment layer > selective colour, select "relative" and fill this in:

Whites: -14, -8, +33, -6

Blacks: -25, -13, +5, +8

Set this layer to 50% opacity.

7. Go to layer > new fill layer > solid colour, type in #F4DEAA and click OK. Set that layer to multiply at 47% opcaity.

8. Go to layer > new adjustment layer > hue/saturation, select "red" from the drop-down list and set saturation to -30.

9. Go to layer > new adjustment layer > brightness/contrast and fill this in:

Brightness: +2

Contrast: +5

Now merge the layers and you're done!

yep, im still alive.
im so sorry i didnt post anything for a long time because i had work to do, but now i updated yet another tutorial and its about trees. trees are alot of work, so there will be two or three parts (im not sure). currently im working on part two so i will upload it shortly.
here i will teach you about tree shapes, and in next two i will show you how to texture a bark and make leaves.

White On White Tutorial

This is a modified version of a note I just sent to someone who asked me about the white-on-white look in some of my recent photos. As useful as it is to have a studio with photographic lights to play in, it is entirely possible to achieve really striking results with minimal equipment.

If you feel inspired to experiment with the white-on-white thing, feel free to post a link to your photos in a comment here so I can have a look. If there's anything in this tutorial that doesn't make sense or that you'd like me to expand upon please comment so that I can update the tutorial and make it as helpful as it can possible be.

Ghost Mist Tutorial

I liked the ghots mist so much that I'm doing a tutorial for you on it so here it is.

1. Start a new layer and set your colors to black and white.
2. Filter/render/clouds and then duplatce the layer.
3. The top layer go filter/render/fibers(do whatever you want in those settings.)
4. Next set the layer mode to overlay and merge layers.
5. Filter/Stylize/Glowing Edges(change it if you want to.)
6. Now I would do the color first before the Emboss. So you can use color balance (Ctrl+B) or Hue/Saturation (Ctrl+U) I used this because of time but when you use this hit the colorize button to get the color you want.
7. Ok Next duplatce the layer and Desaturate (Shift+Ctrl+U).
8. Almost done now go filter/Stylize/Emboss (do whatever you want with it.) Then change the layer mode to overlay (But check the other modes if its better).
9. This is the last thing to do merge the layers and then go to filter/render/lighting effects (Do whatever you want in it.) Now your done.

Now this will work on any size so just keep changing it if it looks weird with different sizes ok. This should work with any photoshop that has this stuff. I forgot if you use this tutorial just let everyone know the that I did the tutorial if someone else wants to use it now good luck.

Tutorial Light Shading Reflect

INTRO:

This is the Basics of the theories behind Lighting, Reflection, and Shading. It's theories and science which you can apply to your art. I only got into the basics. But, if you think about it all complicated things are actually a bunch of basic things clumped together.

I jotted this on a Sticky note, to prove a point. It's so simple, and so basic that anyone can do it.
If baffles me, to no end, that no one knows the basics like, blending or Lighting, Shading and reflection.

So, without getting into the technical principles in mathematical formats like the Physics text books, or getting into the philosophies like The German Scientist/Poet Goethe, I'll just show you!

Bam! It's this easy!

This exercise is what I learned at BCIT (New Jersey). I didn't go to regular high school, I went to a Vocational Institute. I studied what they called "Advertising, Art & Design" which is the same exact things as "Graphic Art".

* Basically, you draw some spheres (or balls).

* Then you choose the angle from which your Light source is coming from.

* Based on the edge of where the light touches the ball is where you make your cast shadow.

* The ball its self will have bands of tone: Darker(er)-Light(er)

* The farther away you get from the light source, the darker the shadow on the object/ball.

* But, you MUST remember to leave an edge of light tone so the edge of the ball and the edge of it's cast shadow don't touch or blend together seamlessly. This is called a "reflection light" or just a "reflection" and it's only a theory, but it's important. Otherwise it doesn't look right. This was something that was emphasized deeply in class.

* The Cast Shadow gets crisper and clearer, the closer it is to the object, not to mention it's also darker.

* But, the farther away the edge from the object and the light the blurrier, lighter, and unclear it becomes.

* Another thing to Note:
Notice that the shadow here is an elips. Where the edges of the light lines are is where the edges of the cast shadow goes.

* Don't forget to erase you Light source lines. They are just to help you. After all they are based on Theory.

* You can actually try this excersize from any angle of light.

* You can also try this with multiple light sources.

* Most things you draw will have multiple light sources anyway, which is why you'll need to learn the reflection theory.

Now think of what this could mean with your own art work. The same principles apply. So, try learning different textures and tones.

Blending:

There are different ways to convey the tones in the shading.

* Impressionist Shading: If you just like working with pencils, you can try an Impressionist style. These tend to be more organized in there lines.

* Finger Blending: You can also blend the lines for smooth tones and gradients. The easiest way to learn it is by taking your fingers and smudging the graphite pencil lines (or charcoal/Pastel).

* Using a Stomp To Blend: But, a step further up from that, and even better is what's called a "stomp". Everyone seems to have a different name for it. But, it's a thick, tightly rolled up paper tool, that you can sand (with sand paper) to a point, and smudge the tones much better and easier.

* TIP: You can also use a kneaded Eraser for special effects in reflections, light lines, etc.

Shading Cheats:

Hate Shading?

Well, if you pretty much "get it" with all this shading theory and reflection, you can cheat by indicating small sections of where you want the shading/shadows to be.
Lightly shade in the sections with a pencil until it conveys a shadow or shading.

People whom have no clue about shading have no idea that you cheated, and when they look at the drawing their brain will have been tricked into thinking/believing there's a shadow their.

It's so simple, I do it all the time, and people swear it's detailed when it's not.

Having said/written all of that.... hopefully by now you'll understand the concepts, and be freed. the mysteries of basics is all gone!

NOW: go to your favorite artist's galleries and look at their works with your new eyes and new thinking and analyze what they did!

Aha! Now you know what they did, and how they did it!

Here's "A Very Small Guide" on how to create trails my way!

This is not meant to be a step-by-step tutorial, but to be a small reminder that playing around and experiments will help you eventually! Furthermore it only explains the real basics of my technique.
Also, I was using photoshop and windows for this tutorial.
Basic knowledge about photoshop is required I think, as, again, this isn't step by step at all.

All example pictures in my guide are from my own gallery.

This is a technique I have developed on my own, there might be others who have the same way of doing things, and that is cool and fine and all
But what is even better, is, that there are completely different ways of doing trails, as well!

NOTES
Photoshop Adjustment Layers are a fantastic way to apply changes to an image without making permanent changes. You can find Adjustment Layers in the Layers menu.

Duo-tone printing involves a printer which uses two inks to create up to three colour combinations (the paper colour being the third). In practise, Gradient Maps are not really duo-tonal, as you can specify more than 2 colours. To truly go the duo, tri or quad-tone route, you can press Image > Mode > Grayscale, then Image > Mode > Duotone.

The portrait of Elle Guildner (photo 9) was a replacement supplied by Elle in the last minute when she noticed a copyright issue with the previous photo. Ellie supplied the new photo, her self-portrait, to add some diversity to the photos.

Though not appearing, Michael Gabrielsen not only shot photo 6, but was present during the shootings of photos 11 and 12, and proof read the first revision, making it the third time he's proofed my writing (Critique is Dead & Guide to Being A Jackass being the first two).

The "chemical" look was first put forth by Layers Magazine in their article "Curvy Cross Processing in Photoshop CS3".

my first tutorial!!

Hope it is helpful to you and you can learn from it.
There is alot more that can be done to the image in the example but, I wanted to keep it fairly simple to follow and as short as possible (although it still came out pretty dang big!! )

The file size for the example .PSD's used was fairly large so I had to upload it to a filesharing network. I have also password protected the archive to try and keep the rips to a minimal

I have split the archive that goes along with this tutorial into two parts, both just under 100mb!!

The archive contains the tutorial listed here plus two .PSD's that go along with it, a .PSD with all the clouds I use as well as the .PSD source that I made during this tutorial that contains the image shown.

Some time ago i've made a similar tutorial but dA has deleted it 'cause is gone against the copyright... so i've decide to remake it, because many people have asked me how i do all that leon lights in my work...
well...here is a tutorial that explains (hope really simply) how to make them

some varying
you can make the lines also using a simple round brush, without use the pen tool (but it's better made with a tablet)

you try to use the settings of the second paragraph witha different brush (for example a grunge) to make some nice effect
