Castlevania SotN manga -ENG- 1

Due to some fans requests, I retranslated my tagalog version of the Castlevania Symphony of the Night manga, into english. I used Adobe Illustrator CS on this one, compared to the previous manga which was done on Photoshop 6. I based the dialogue on the tagalog translation. You can find the original tagalog translation of this manga on this [link]

The artwork was done by Ayami Kojima and this manga is released only in Japan as a bonus item for fans who bought their copy of Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. The story is a prelude to the events that happened in the game.

I love hydrangea flowers, really, I do. But this piece really, really, really made me think about them twice. Call it one of my less thought-through projects, yes?

Anyway...
This piece was originally planned to commemorate the passing of an era. The visual rock band known as "Kagrra," (yes, the comma is part of the name) has disbanded in March of this year after more than 10 years of activity. And as someone who considers himself a passing fan of this band... it's truly sad to see them go. Sad enough that yours truly went and got himself started on this project full of hydrangea flowers...

It's been a strange journey. When I first heard this band, they were producing an interesting mesh of rock, Japanese style. I am talking about these guys using the 5-note minor chord that's specific to Japanese music in their rock repertoire. And that was something else, indeed. As they aged, their music turned mellow and more pop-oriented. And for a while, I have to admit, I was sorely disappointed. But no matter what... it's sad to see them go.

So, for my far-away musicians and my fellow fans... Hydrangea flowers.

Technical Note:
The HJ #1 layout paper is thin and durable, which makes it a good candidate for intricate work. But it's still a good practice to exercise caution when dealing with small details. Extraction of cut-off pieces requires some care.

Hey! First wallet ever... I must confess I'm quite happy about the resul t ^^
This felt wallet is 100% handmade by me, in about 25-30 hours (using hands takes lot of time ). The most difficult thing to do was surely the owl, 'cause I had to find a way to hide the upper part of the seal, and the best way to sew the foldings.
What else to say... hope you like it!

oh my gooooood. I ... might have overdone it. This took 19 hours! I like it ... but I think I'm going to look for something simpler for the next page.

I spent about maybe three or four of those hours trying to figure out what color gamut to use ... I even created a simple flash program to chart the hue/sat values on a color wheel.

But I feel like I learned a ton, so .... maybe it's okay that it took a long time.

First page done! Woohoo!

"1000 Words" was inspired by a comment on one of my other work "Tape it Back Together" . In the comment, this person told me when she first saw the drawing, she thought it was sad but couldn't connect with the situation. Three months later, her parents divorced and when she saw the drawing again, she began to sob. It made me wonder, had she shown something like the torn up picture to her parents, would it have made a difference?

This story also explores the purpose of art, what can be art, and what art means to me personally.

Always scratch folding lines with the backside of a cutter!

*Step Red: Fold the triangular columns and glue them to the back of the rainbows and the cat. Add weight if necessary.

*Step Orange: Fold the single parts of the body. Try if the columns can easily slit through the holes. Use a pen for the round parts to prebend.

*Step Yellow: Push the lever through the first hole and glue green on green on both sides of the barrel. Finish the body and make sure you can turn the lever.

*Step Green: Push the rainbows and the cat through the holes and let Nyan Cat fly.

*Solving problems of friction:
a) Triangluar holes are too small
b) Tape the areas where it has to slide, some paper sorts are too rough, transparent tape is slippery enough on paper.

Update:

I finished page five some time ago, but after wrapping it up I began to feel conscious of the fact that this was - by nearly all accounts - a real person, who died a very tragic, lonely death. I still think about this project quite a bit, but I've decided to hold off on updating for the foreseeable future in favour of work projects and short comics.

The more I learned about this figure, the more I felt cartoonifying her was not the way to go. I'd like to revisit it one day when I get the chance to do it a little more justice. Apologies for stopping midway though, and thanks kindly for reading this far. <3

Holding Your Breath

My sister and I grew up in two completely different worlds. You'd think that would make it impossible for us to connect over the vast abyss of what we don't know about each other - in fact, it did for quite a few years.

But, in reality, you'd be completely wrong!

There's not another single person in the world that I am most close to than my sister. Without even meaning to, I think we completely changed each other's worlds, and I'll always be thankful for how she changed mine.

We didn't "grow up" together and we weren't close in age to the point where we could ah... get along, I guess? I was the kid sister and really, how cool is it to hang out with your baby sister? Not very, amirite?

But when I think back to that old house in the mountains we spent time at, there's a few images that stand out so brightly in my mind. One of them being that time she had a sleep over in the backyard and our crazy neighbor decided to do his archery practice and it misfired and hit the tent we were in. Dad ran over and rammed the arrow in the guy's door and it stayed there for years.

But the other ones are much more meaningful. *koff*

Every day, my sister and I would wait for the bus to take us to school. And every day she insisted that she had to hold my hand. No matter the places she could go or the people she could have sat with, she sat with me all the way to school and back.

And... I will never forget that.

SO this is for you, my sister, for you, more than anyone, really raised me and showed me who I wanted to be in the last few years. Because I was pretty lost without realizing it and if it weren't for you, I would have stopped drawing years ago.

Thanks for being my best friend.

I just watched Stranger Than Fiction yesterday starring Will Ferrell and Maggie Gyllenhaal as well as Dustin Hoffman, Emma Thompson and Queen Latifah. What an incredibly dynamic cast! Gosh, I had so much fun watching that movie. The clean and crisp graphic animations, the witty lines and narrative, the colorful assortment of personalities and dilemmas... and simply the unique and absolutely engaging plot! I loved it! I don't like Will Ferrell aside from Anchorman, but this was a great film!

So I drew from the scene that was most toe-curling-adorable!
