dA Suggestion: Permalink

For a few months a system on dA allows us to view e.g. other deviations of the same gallery without needing to refresh the whole page. That might be a bit faster, and be more pleasant to eye (without that white blink when the page starts loading), but has a big impact on bookmarking or copy-pasting the URL shown in the address bar when we want to show someone a particular deviation. In such case, having clicked on the link or the bookmark, the user downloads the first page on which he landed to view the deviation (e.g. gallery, other work of the same artist, category), and then the deviation itself is loaded.

I know the textbox with similar facility is hidden in the Share menu, but it isn't good for bookmarking either. One must copy the address in the "Link" section, paste it in their sidebar and then bookmark it. Or click the title to be redirected to static version of the deviation page.

The other way out is to include a line in page's header:

which might be good for bookmarks. This way users would still need to drop-down the Share menu to let someone know about the deviation in a more efficient way.

PS. Excuse me for my interpretation of permalink icon. I'm not a good pixel artist.

This mornings total Luna eclipse (16/6/11) taken in Melbourne Vic (Australia land). Camera Nikon d3000.
Heads up on the next total luna eclipse on Dec 10th.

I was pretty excited to get up at the crack of dawn to see this seeing as I've never seen an eclipse of any sort before and they certainly do interest me.

Yes it was freezing but I found the highest hill and was ready to be awed (sat there for about 2 hrs ..) I shared the hill with 5 other independent photographers! was great ..and the police mind you (think they saw a congregation of cars and suspected something was up. No drugs here, just cameras!)
Can't wait to see a solar eclipse now

By the way that haze over the town is due to the fog (thank god the night was clear! lately the fog has been pretty intense so I was obviously a bit worried about there being a clear morning or not phew!)

I would of liked to of captured the completed luna eclipse (as in all stages right up to the finishing point) but after the final stage you see there, the moon went a really deep red (there was barely any contrast against the sky) my camera could no longer focus on it was eerie..

edit: A few people have been asking for the camera setting for the Luna so here is a rundown

Camera setting tips: For a regular moon shot you will require a F number of about 10-11 and shutter about 1/200 to 1/250 (iso/compensation will be dependent on the sky above your head, use your judgment) BUT when the moon starts to become shadowed (and the orange cast begins) it's essential to change the fast shutter to a slower shutter, about 3secs will be fine (the moon does move quick just like the stars, even at 5 secs you will see movement!) and an F number of around 7 otherwise your camera will pick up nothing at all and you will not get details. The lens I used was a 70-300mm. For close moon shots (with lovely detail that is) you'd probably want nothing less then 300mm hope that helps! oh and tripod, tripod, tripod and a shutter release helps (so you don't move the camera when you take the photo) selftimer will work too

ps. Also try and find something else you can include in the photo to give it relevance and something to contrast against (it makes the photo more interesting as we then know the moons size and location opposed to just having a moon hanging against an empty boring background). Towns and cities are always a good choice (man-made element) as being human it sorta makes you realise just how insignificant we really are here on Earth..

Intro
You all may remember my old group messages script that would let you see all the messages in your groups, but that sort of broke when Firefox 4 was released. And it was just a messy script and didn't always work.

Well this is my update to that script, and it works pretty much the same way, without all the hassle that the other script had

How it works
So as you can see from the screenshot, this will put in a icon at the top of your page telling you how many group messages you have. Group messages are counted as either notifications (notes or forum threads or whatever) or correspondence items (deviations or affiliates and things). It doesn't count comments, but you can still see any comments you have by just opening the menu up.

Then you can click (or hover) on the icon to open the menu you see in the screenshot. It will list all of your groups, and what message types each group has. This saves you from checking each group folder in your message centre manually to see the messages.

Then you can click on the groups listed there to be taken right to that group folder in your message centre so you can take care of the messages you may have.

If you don't have any messages, or you have any activity messages, the number will be lighter and smaller (since those aren't as important), but if you have any correspondence items, notices, or comments, the number will be white and bold, so you can easily see it.

IMPORTANT - Please read
This script has a few things to keep in mind. First and foremost, it may list more things than just your groups. If you have a custom folder you made that could be the name of a group, then it will be listed there (but still accurately say each number of correspondence, notices, comments, and activity). But if your custom folder name has a space in it, any special characters other than - or even a - at the start or end of the folder name, then it won't show up. So you may need to edit your folders and give them a name a group couldn't have. For example, I had a "llamas" custom folder (I was curious to see how many I got and from who years ago) but that would show up in the menu. So I made a new folder, named it "llamas-" (with the - at the end) and then moved all the messages in my old llamas folder to this new llamas- folder and deleted the llamas folder.

The group icon will slide in as soon as the script loads (as you know, user scripts load slightly after the page loads) but it will be partially transparent until it fetches all of your group messages, at which time it will fade up to 100 percent opacity. I had a version that wouldn't do anything, and then once it was all ready, it would pop in, but it was slightly distracting to have it pop in so late after the page loaded. So you won't be able to click (or hover) anything until the group icon is totally opaque. I've had a few times where it never became fully opaque, but a page reload fixed that.

When you hover over each group, you'll see it's a link to your group's folder. Most of the time. The way the HTML structure is, I wasn't able to make the whole "blue hover area" a link, so it's mostly just the group title and each type of message that is a link. But clicking anywhere on it will bring you to your group folder, so don't worry. You just may not be able to open the link in a new tab, depending on where you are hovering. And, this will act funny and open two tabs to your group message centre if you click the a href while in the chat rooms, but I don't expect many people will find that a problem, and I don't really want to fix that

Of course, this won't do much if you don't have group folders in your message centre (meaning you aren't an admin of any group) so don't install this unless you're an admin of any groups

This works in both Firefox (with Greasemonkey) and Chrome. Although if you use Chrome, you may want to check out this other extension, which adds a lot more functionality to messages in general.

I thought of this when ^ChewedKandi posted this poll.

It might not deter all miscats, but possibly having a gallery description when you select could help, this for example- I had NO IDEA this gallery existed, and I see a bunch of miscats of this gallery into other ones.

This is the lovely ^BurgerBunny's description of which I borrowed from her ^projecteducate description here.

Now of course, I was thinking of also integrating a way so it can be written in different popular languages, but I'll possily play around with the layout of that.

SUGGESTION - GROUP SUBMISSION

I've noticed several changes in the group submission system, so I decided to do this visual suggestion taking all the good and useful things of each system version I tried ^o^

In this suggestion I'm not following any particular "step by step", I'm just trying to show you the different features you can find. On top of module you have a general browser to write the group name. Later you can see how I find the suitable group/s little by little as I select the options I want in each category (categories are OPTIONAL, you can use the ones you wish or need, no need to select/fill them all)

To find an especific group it's just enough if you write the group name in the general browser, but for example, if you wanna submit your a digital picture in 5 groups whose names start with "digital blablabla" I think it'd be easier to find them by categories.

I think this could be a good idea to classify and filter groups when we submit our art in groups, this way everybody could make an exhaustive search and find them faster ^o^

Group Pre-Submission Agreement

EDIT: I'm not going to pretend that I'm perfect, either. I am also quite guilty of perpetrating this ignorant image submitting. While I won't send a dozen improper images to a single club, I am very guilty of sending a dozen clubs an improper image. So we need this feature to handle both ends of the idiot spectrum.

Last week, the #color-me-club was obliterated by lots of irrelevant clutter and improperly scanned work. On the club's front page, we have three instances where we list the rules, and every time, it says very clearly 'Clean work only,' and even explains what clean is. No scanner marks, and no images acquired with webcams or camera phones. But still, we get dozens of images from people who missed all three of those guidelines, and still continue to smear their sketchy poorly scanned content throughout our inbox.

It has been hindering the #color-me-club so much, we've called for help to bring on extra hands to weed out the truly rubbish submissions that have no place there. When we say 'we accept all talent and skill levels,' we're talking about the artist; not the crappy scanner they bought at a garage sale in 1992.

If your scanner isn't up to snuff, or if you can't afford to purchase anything other than lined pulp paper, your work will be declined. It's not fair to the line artists who do have the proper equipment and spend all the time to clean up work for the colorists.

So we really really need something like this. Having this final safeguard as a reminder would really prevent a lot of headache on behalf of both parties. Myself, I've submitted digital art to #Groups that only accept photography. If I got one of these notices before posting the work, I would've cancelled the submission process, thus preventing me the humiliation and that #Group's moderators the wasted time.

This would also open up a lot of space on a #Group's front page. Normally, they have to put a big ol' daunting text box up top to ensure people read the rules, which forces all the artwork down. I don't want people to be greeted by a snooty ol' textbox when they come to the #Group, I want them to see our members' artwork front and center.

But since so many people can't be arsed to scroll down and read the rules before scrolling back up to press 'Contribute,' that's not an option for large #Groups. If this agreement pop-up was in place, there would be no need for a rules textbox on a #Group's frontpage. We can put the galleries up top and our artists first!

Thoughts or suggestions on this idea? Please let me know. Thanks!

Deviant list on the watch menu

I watch 254 deviants, some of them because they're my friends/I know them, but most of them because of their inspiring and beautiful art. Without deviant lists I'd get lost..... I don't remember all of the deviants I watch by their username. Especially not the new ones. Avatar, MAYBE, but not name. Mostly I remember people by their ART.

That's why I arrange my watch list by categories, so that if I want to find a certain person [which, again, I usually remember by the art in the gallery] I can narrow the search down by looking just in that specific category.

I find it extremely annoying to have to go to the "manage my friends" section and wait till the whole list loads [and it DOES take a while with my connection] only to add a single deviant to a list.

My suggestion is to be able to add deviants to a list right after you watch them, and without having to load a whole new page ain't it much better?

Hello all!
This is a picture I took on a chilly Saturday morning at the rapids of Koiteli in the river Kiiminkijoki about 25 kms from Oulu, Finland. The weather here has been strange lately, one day we get 10cms of snoe and then it melts away the next day. I hope this snow stays longer

Dancing flames above the ice ...

This warm/cold opposition was a very decliate work .. quite hard to find the correct equilibrium. Maybe still too experimental for some of you , maybe a bit too much 'surrealism' .. But in fact . the blue hue in the dark tones was an interesting compliment for the upper sky's color . the warm balance was quite cold on the icy part .. I've mixed two bracketed shots .. And tried to keep the essence and simplicity of the composition.

With a recent population estimate putting the population of Dark-eyed Juncos at 630 million in North America, they are one of the most abundant birds on the continent. For most of the U.S. they are winter birds, and can be found anywhere from back yard bird feeders to the deep woods. These little sparrows are famous for their rattle like call note, and their bright white tail feathers, which they constantly flash in flight. This bird is of the "Slate-colored" subspecies.

Santa is getting ready for his midnight run!

Been wanting to do an Xmas/Santa scene for a while. Re-did most of my existing characters and create new ones, like the reindeer and girl elf. Probably could have put more into the scene, but I didn't want it too busy.

Static because I thought this would work well as a website decoration.

I don't think Santa is bringing me anything this year. *pout* I lied, he brought me a Daily Deviation.

I am rather sick of some of my groups being overwhelmed with people that submit blank applications. So I think there should be an option to deny these automatically.

What do you guys think?

To all the people in the comments claiming this is lazy etc. It isn't, this is merely a suggestion that would help a lot of founders. If this were implemented, you always have the option of turning it off and allowing blank apps, so I'm not really sure why you are getting angry about an OPTION, not a permanent or compulsory change.

Thankyou to everyone that has left positive feedback and critiques, they are all greatly appreciated.

Group Submissions Suggestion

Just something that I thought up today. It's not meant to discourage the reading of Group Rules or anything. I think it would be helpful to those that are a part of tons of groups, and can't exactly keep track of all the different limits on the Galleries. Or to which Groups they submitted something and which groups they didn't.

The widget automatically displays the Submission Limit for the Gallery, and there's also a customizable line at the bottom, for Groups like #Feature-Club that are only open for submissions at a certain time. If you click on it, a drop-down text box will tell you when you last submitted something to the Gallery. If you've reached the limit for the time being, an additional message will tell you how long you've got to wait before submitting again. If there isn't a warning message, then you're good to go!

I personally hate going through the process of finding the right folder, finding the right deviation, and then finding out that I reached the submission limit. (But maybe it's just me, but sometimes I get error messages telling me that the page wouldn't load, or the "Submit to this Folder" popup "Failed to retrieve data" or something of the like. So it usually takes me twice as long to get things done on dA. ) Thanks for reading, and please leave me your thoughts. All feedback is welcome.

Boulder Ablaze

Last evening myself and ~PaulGana went to photograph the "Fourmile Canyon Wildfire",which is burning behind and above the city of Boulder, and what awaited us was something the likes of which I have never seen. I always wanted to photograph a wildfire, but I have to say, I couldn't help but stop and be reminded of the people who are and have lost their homes, and whose lives are changed forever. Thank goodness for very long lenses is all I can say. I would in no way want to be close to this monster. Talk about bittersweet, this very shot now seems to be going viral on twitter [link] and is approaching 10,000 views in just a few hours. I only wish I never had to photograph it to begin with... This was shot with my Sony a550 and my Tamron 200-400mm lens. I am reminded of a quote with this shot--"Even when causing her most destruction, Mother Nature is still beautiful", very true, it is just very sad to see it....

EDIT--- As of 4pm Denver time today, this photo has now been picked up by The AP (Associated Press) so if anyone sees it please get a shot of it in use, or a screen cap. Their client base is huge and includes many news agencies (NBC, CBS, Time Magazine, etc etc) along with several online news resources, like Yahoo, AOL, Google, etc etc If anyone happens to see it online please by all means get a screen shot for me! If you see it in print please take a snap shot of it for me!

2011 Air Balloon Festival in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Québec. A festival I've made a point to attend every year since 2006 with my father, and when my father passed away in March of 2010, I continued to attend if only to keep the tradition alive and cherish his memory.

This script adds two buttons to your latest journal entry that is shown on your profile page. One takes you to the New Journal Entry page and the second one takes you to the page where you can edit the try (sorry...the text in the screenshot might be misleading causing you to think that it allows inline edit)

- Wasn't showing up because of a tiny error in syntax (last line, extra brace) (v1.0.7)
- Removed the fakelink thing, didn't remember that it was possible to include variables using "+" in the innerHTM (v1.0.6)
- Changed the div adding code, also implemented an update code (now it will notify you if there is an update) (v1.0.5)
- Solved some unusual problem which caused the buttons to not appear (v1.0.3) [post-v7 update]
- Solved the New Button problem. (v1.0.2)
