Directions: Focus your eyes on the center ( the divider between the two images) and begin to slowly cross your eyes, until you see a 3d image ( as you would sense depth in " real life") There will be three images total at this point. The center one will be completely 3d and crisp. The two ones on the outside should only be 50% there, fluttery and confusing to look at, because only one of your eyes is seeing it.

I found that it's much easier to turn a painting into 3d if there is a gradual change in distance from the foreground to the background.

Why? To create the effect you need to make bigger and bigger shifts as you get closer and closer, or farther and farther away. The clouds in the background were probably moved to the left 3 inches across the screen.

If you have an object, say someones hand, in the foreground, and directly behind it in the far background the moon in space, the horizontal gap between the two objects will have to be so huge that you end up either sacrificing the hand or the moon. Depending on if you are working from the foreground to the background in your perspective adjustments, the entire area you have selected to move in the background will have a very awkward shape of a hand displaced in it. You then have to go in and paint over that empty negative space with some moon, or whatever it is in the background. It's usually pretty hard to keep it consistent. Parts of the background usually end up being inconsistent in depth. Part of the moon might be at a range away from you that the trees should be. The effect ends up being mixed and confusing. you end up seeing the same piece of painting in the background as well as in the foreground...at the same time. It keeps flashing and shuttering in your head because your brain doesn't know how to make sense of it.

Well, whatever.

This is why gradual changes in distance would be prefered if you were to go about turning a previous piece into a stereo image.

This one worked out really well, because it was so gradual. That's all...Could have just said that....

You'll notice that up there in the left by the little ships there is some unfinished business. Don't mind it. I'll get to it one day. ]]>

This is drawing of my fathers eye, artist, creator, destroyer, blue collar philosopher an eye of a romantic living a charmed life. Coming upon eighty years of age, has he attained the dreams, reached goals set so long ago? Or avoided success. This symbol speaks of grand accomplishments and painful losses, but where hope never diminishes.

(on the morning of 9/10/11 at 7:40 my father Fritz Mersmann passed away quietly and peacefully. He was my hero in so many ways, my greatest teacher in art, my inspiration in life. He was truly a beautiful soulGods Speed Papa, I love you.)

A beautiful owl, sadly decidedly scarce in most areas. Usually seen at dusk or after dark, caught in car headlights, when appears ghostly white; flight leisurely and slow on rounded wings. Only when seen perched can the orange-buff upperparts, speckled with tiny black and white dots, be appreciated; facial disc heart-shaped and white. Feeds mainly on small mammals located by quartering meadows, farmland and roadside verges; seen all too often as a road casualty. Sometimes nests in tree holes but, as name implies, often uses barns and other buildings and readily takes to nesting platform provided for this purpose. Blood-curdling call one of the most frightening sounds of the countryside at night. Widespread in Britain and Ireland although absent from many upland areas.

If you don’t know who the Shifletts are, then you’re seriously missing out on some of the most powerful figurative sculpture that’s being made today. I shit you not. Go check out their site [link] and thank me later.

This is probably the coolest project I’ve ever been able to work on for so many reasons. Not only because The Shifletts were crazy enough to hire a bloke like me, but because I was given the task of capturing their dynamic 3D style into a 2D piece of art. Generally things work the other way around where a sculpture will be based off of a drawing or painting, but it was totally cool to be able to flip that convention on its ear. I kinda felt like one of those old school portrait artists who was commissioned to capture the likeness of a royal dictator. Too damn cool!

So anyway, Ol’ Scratch is part of a line of original character sculpts that the Shifletts have recently launched and this sculpture is already available as a resin kit and will eventually be turned into a bronze as well. In addition, this painting I did will be made available as a limited edition print exclusively at their site in the near future. I’m so totally stoked you can’t even believe! I’ll definitely keep you guys posted as to when they become available.

So for the technical stuff - This piece is 100% an acrylic painting done with all traditional brushwork on Strathmore cold press 500 series Bristol board. 11” x 16.5”.

I’ve posted an extensive tutorial about the making of this piece on The Shiflett Bros. forum at this [link] or here [link] . I tried to be as thorough as possible in explaining each step of the painting process so I hope it’s helpful to those of you interested in knowing how I make my work. Also if you have any questions regarding the tutorial, please register at the Shiflett forums and ask your question there in the tutorial thread, so we can keep all of the info and answers in one place.
