Well, it's hard to believe this is finally done. Eight months, tonnes of frustration and learning later, and it's actually looking quite nice. So yeah! Seems oddly little to say about something I've worked on for so long (better find something, I've got a 5k word report to write yet), but I guess it kinda speaks for itself. For people familiar with the Mouse Guard comic, you might recognise that the protagonist is Gwendolyn. Inspiration was mostly from the owl fight in Winter 1152, however, and a couple of shots are similar to panels from the comics. And the owl is a Eurasian Eagle owl, based on a real one at Liberty Bird Centre in Dorset (who is named Bisto and is very much alive).

Pretty happy with it at the moment, all things considered, though I know I'll look back later and wonder what I was thinking. I'm responsible for the base models, mouse animation, effects, lighting and rendering. =apocalypsebunny (Kat) did the Zbrushing, texturing, owl animation and compositing. *jinxhellbent did rigging and sound editing. And we kinda all did the pre-production.

:devapocaylpsebunny: and myself are planning on re-rendering in HD with a bunch of fixes over the summer. ..Liiiiike getting rid of Maya's dire motion blur.

Feel free to ask any questions about how we made this. :] Crits also welcome, but chances are I know about most of the big problems since I've spent countless hours staring at them hoping they'll go away. xD

It was done in a month using Flash, Photoshop and After Effects. We drove to San Francisco and took photos of the city to use as bases for the backgrounds.
Once we had a shot list written out, we went about making a cut of the timing using the raw photos. After we had finalized the shots we were using, we then cleaned up and recolored the photos in Photoshop.
Using the timing video as reference, the characters were animated in Flash over the final backgrounds and exported in layers out to After Effects. Some shots were finished all in After Effects, some all in Flash; it was a very shot-per-shot project, but also a ton of fun to work on.

This is made in Flash Cs3. With a texture using blendingmode to make the traditional effect. Backgrounds are drawn in photoshop Cs3. The traditional parts are drawn on paper, stopmotion figures cut out from cardboard, and cutout scanned in, and then an animated drawing. ( draw slightly then scan then draw alittle more then scan etc)

The consept and story for this movie started in january this year(school prodject) and ive had since then til now to finish it all by myself. Over 5 mins alone in less than 5 months all together, that is some hard work done right there.

Ive been frusterated, exited, happy, insane, crying, angry and overly joyfull while doing this. BUT MOST OF ALL Ive learned so much from this prosess. durr!

Flaws and mistakes

PEOPLE Believe me, i know almost every flaw and mistake, because ive seen though theese files 1.000.000 times. I know them, I JUST didnt have time to fix them fFFFFff xD
I just had to consentrate getting this done til today. Some animations are so rushed i didnt even sketch them first xD

And the most annoying one i didnt have time to fix was when hes flying the jump from scene 4 to 5 doesnt make sense i should have animated him sitting up but durr xD

my thesis film.

the idea for this project grew from a single image in my head: a giant, brooding monster watching over a little girl outside her bedroom window. overall, i'm satisfied with it and glad i was able to finish such a large production, but i look back and i know i could've made it better. perhaps sometime in the future i'll remake it and do the story the justice it deserves. what i had planned is too heartfelt and epic for a short film.

still... my favorite aspect of the entire film is the music. once again it was composed by Derek Zhao, the man who did the score for "To The Sun". this time around we went for something more grand: a full orchestra (22 musicians i believe). the recording session was the most amazing part of the entire production and Derek did an excellent job interpreting the emotions i wanted into music.
