Soldiers pinned down by heavy enemy fire can call in Copperhead support, which is deployed via helicopter or support truck and released under its own power to engage enemies. The three energy intensive hover pads allow movement over any terrain with a flight ceiling of around 5 metres: Although expensive to operate and maintain and able to drain the on-board power cells within 30 minutes, the hover systems are almost silent, do not produce the dust clouds helicopters create, and can topple walls and crush light vehicles by applying the mass of the robot in a specific direction.

Copperheads takes orders from a designated field commander either via vocal instruction or mobile communication devices, engaging targets with a series of integrated weapons systems: Small missiles, launched from interchangeable piggybacked pods, can hammer vehicles and structures from great distances. The primary punch however comes from two arm mounted high intensity laser emitters: The robot’s battery feeds energy to large cylindrical capacitors on the lower arms, which in turn supply power to the lasers mounted above. These lasers can dispense energy at intensities ranging from harmless visible light, to enough power to punch holes through tanks.

With the battery almost depleted, the robot enters a low power mode, settling on its hover pads to conserve energy while the upper body is still able to defend its position as a stationary turret.
The 14 foot tall ACU-Copperhead was designed by Western bloc powers to engage in close combat support working in conjunction with human troops in urban combat zones.

By night however…all chaos breaks loose as the skies become a total blood bath, the ferociously violent hunts of aerial predators being so frenzied that one would assume such hunting activity would create a totally unbalanced and unsustainable food chain what with how many creatures (both grazers and hunters themselves) are consumed, but days and nights on Sor’ are shorter than on earth meaning there is less time for the carnage to ensue.

Underneath the forest canopy where cover and hiding places are more plentiful the terrifying assortment of life forms that roam the eerie night have evolved to be more stealthy and devious in their nature. Many have developed hyper advanced senses and are so stealthy one might never see the predators sneak up on them before their flesh is literally being torn into – even if the creature in question is vast, such as the huge Hairy Truppon in this picture. For some scale of its size the spiral shaped vegetation seen both at the edges of the picture and close by it are around the size of a tall human.

This particular individual has encountered a group of the much smaller Drakar’ or Dragons whom were taking shelter in a cluster of the mysterious centuries or more old cylinder shaped ruins that litter certain parts of the forest along with other relics and mysteries. The function of these huge structures as well as the identity of whichever race that built them remains a mystery.

The Hairy Truppon despite its insect like appearance is actually of the same reptile like animal class (though this family possesses mammal-like characteristics such as being warm blooded and suckling their young in a manner) as Triphons and Dragons. However it has traded in its toes and fingers as well as wings for six limbs that each end in - and are mostly made up of a huge razor sharp barb that it walks on. These vicious replacements for feet not only elevate it off the ground to appear even bigger than it already is so as to intimidate would be predators but because of how small the tip of each barb is – when it moves the hunter is literally as silent as an insect scurrying along the ground and cannot be heard – even when sprinting up right behind you… on the rare occasion that it needs to sprint at all

If one looks closely at its head they’ll realise it is simply the devolved upper jaw of what was once a reptilian face that now lacks a mouth completely (skin has grown over what would have been the roof of its mouth). Skin has also grown over where its eyes, ears and nose would be. To breathe gill shaped openings are at the back of its head. Replacing its eyes, nose and ears is a cluster of excruciatingly sensitive sensory organs for smell and hearing, concealed within tubes that are withdrawn into pores in its head when not in use as the price for their sensitivity comes at being incredibly delicate. These hyper advanced sensory organs can sniff out the exact location of prey hiding in the trees up to a mile away and its said amongst locals that Hairy Truppons don’t look for their meals – they merely walk about for a while already knowing where everything is hiding but simply trying to decide who to eat tonight.

Hairy Truppons (the largest species of the Truppon family) get their name from the excruciatingly long thin white hairs covering their bodies that both silence their approach further by gently brushing vegetation aside and are also covered in sensitive nerve bundles so the creature is aware of its surroundings despite lacking vision. To further the animals knowledge of its surroundings it also travels along sensory trails that its advanced smell sensors can detect and through these it is able to know exactly which part of the forest its in – its phenomenal smell also comes in handy when avoiding its own predators and rather than possessing many defences Truppons simply sprint away whenever they catch the faintest the faintest whiff of a distant predator.

Because it lacks sophisticated hunting techniques and is a solitary animal its intelligence is not incredibly high but it is still roughly as smart as an intelligent canine though possessing a different mentality due to not living in a pack. It can communicate with other members of its kind to a rudimentary level through releasing hormones but this communication is almost entirely limited to attracting mates, warding off would be rivals and releasing a warning when predators are close by.

A Hairy Truppon is relatively weak for its size, and though they will sometimes take prey out in the open they are mainly adapted to in fact cornering maternal prey that has taken shelter from the night in their dens. An individual sniffs (and occasionally hears) out its prey and after honing in on its location it then creeps up towards the creatures den with an eerie knowledge of the preys line of sight so that it can stay out of it until the last moment when it must position itself in front of the hidden dens entrance. It then rears up on its hind legs and digs its front four barbs through the side of the shelter to lock its body against the den before pressing its entire chest against the entrance to seal off escape.

Grotesquely its chest then bursts open to reveal its stomach which has evolved rubbery lips that can part like a mouth, and through millennia of mutation excess intestines now uncoiled and slightly hardened, ending in claw like teeth whip out with lightening speed to grab prey and drag it towards the ominous mouth stomach. Although prey might loose much of their skin to the serrated teeth its usually still alive and screaming as its thrust into the mouth shaped stomach to be digested alive.

The Hairy Truppon is a truly terrifying predator feared by all for its uncanny ability to sneak right up to the entrance of ones shelter without notice despite its vast size, and the unnerving belief that even when you don’t know where it is out in the forest- it always knows where you are regardless of whether it chooses to eat you that night or not.

The Shades of Red saga is in the second stage of editing, after three years of being written, and a website with more information will be up soon.

Their extremely muscular arms do not end in hands but instead feet with two pincer like toes that clamp onto branches directly above. Their legs on the other hand, although below the arms like one would expect for a biped, are spindly and easily tucked away. At the end of them rather than feet are hands with two thumbs and five long spindly fingers which can hold and manipulate objects directly in front of the Illiaks highly evolved eyes, which are capable of seeing colours few other species could even imagine. Their legs can easily reach up to their faces due to being longer than one would expect a trait the species has easily evolved as they don’t actually support themselves on their legs for balance.

The reason for this odd body shape is because for Illiaks the branches above them are the same as the ground below is to humans. Due to living in a world infested with hyper lethal predators that have evolved to become extremely efficient hunters as a result of planet Sors shorter day and night span, some species such as Illiaks have not even bothered trying to live life in the predator infested skies or below on the ground crawling with monstrous ambush predators. Instead they live up in the middle section of the huge trees safe from anything on the ground and shielded from the air by the thick canopy that they never venture above. Although they can walk on all fours on the ground they are clumsy and venerable like this.

A highly intelligent race that are experts with tool manipulation, Illiaks also posses facial tentacles and even clamps on their tail to help them manipulate technology in a way that along with their seven fingered hands is far more dexterous than humans could ever achieve. Or Triphons for that matter. Due to their extreme organizational skills and talent at transforming piles of useless scrap into sophisticated machinery and weaponry, Illiaks’ live and work directly alongside Triphons. Whereas Triphons do the majority of manual work such as fighting and clearing the forest so they can sweep through it, the Illiaks’ provide them with specialised equipment, organize the camp via the means of long boring lists and dreary paper work and pilot the more sophisticated hunting vehicles.

Despite being frailer and less aggressive than Triphons Illiaks are on equal terms with them, with each species acknowledging that they would be lost without the other yet secretly believing themselves to be the great contributors in the relationship. Illiaks’ no longer live in the forest as their ancestors once did and have become semi-industrialized like Triphons, but for their ease of transport where they work and across the camp numerous bar rigs are set up to allow them to comfortably hang above the ground freeing up their leg hands.

Illiaks culture is centred around knowledge and story telling. They absorb information at a shockingly fast level and if they had access to even half the resources we on earth do it seems likely that they would have achieved space flight centuries ago. For an Illiak’ the greatest gift it can receive is more knowledge whether fictional or non fictional (though it must be specified from the giver which it is otherwise it would be taken as an extreme insult). In their spare time they love creating comic strip style “magazines” either of short stories or recent scientific findings. These articles are traded, sold and given at an alarming rate with those created by the more senior science officers being the most highly prized. Hanging from the same bars the Illiaks work from themselves, many of the comics are created in less than a day despite being beautifully illustrated thanks to their advanced dexterity, and after use most of the less valuable ones litter the floor due to Illiaks’ never forgetting what they’ve learnt and getting through so many articles a day they only keep hold of treasured comics they want to re-read simply to blissfully remember the day they first learnt the information within or because they want to be exclusive possessors of that knowledge.

Illiak females possess a highly integrated social mentality, being maternal creatures with a strong sense of group bonding. Males are very different beings, however, and display the strong sexual dimorphism of this species: Attached to each female's back is a leech-like creature that is actually the highly modified male, reduced to little more than a sex organ. For cultural reasons this male is always respectfully concealed by the female's garments in observance of a cultural taboo. During a short larval stage females and males connect with the female then developing further whilst the male does the opposite. The devolved male regularly releases hormones into the female hosts’ body causing her to act aggressively and dominant for short periods of time on a weekly cycle. Although other races cannot be sure how spiritual or not this is, Illiaks claim that they maintain the consciousness of both male and female “parts” equally, with the male sex organ apparently continuing to evolve intellect along with the female well after the larval stage.

Asides never feeling lonely, this gives a major advantage to Illiaks’ because each individual is able to create offspring alone that will not be clones nor will be related to each other so that one individual can create an entirely new colony without limiting the gene pool. Illiak’ “pairs” as each female calls herself, can still mate with each other by secreting a slime like chemical through their mouth which when mixed with the same substance from other individuals develops into eggs outside the body. This means offspring can be created that have many parents. As a result the gene pool within Illiaks is vast, totally devoid of genetic diseases and they seem to evolve at a faster rate than other races changing drastically in just several thousand years.

Despite their different nature, the Illiak race does enjoy mingling with Triphons taking keen interest in the blood sports Triphons love to participate in – though Illiaks are nearly always just fascinated spectators, and some of them even go as far to experiment with the numerous hallucinogenic drugs off-duty Triphon soldiers favour. Being a curious race who are great lovers of mystery and science many of them admire the forest and bear no deliberate bad intentions towards it. However they never let this get in the way of wiping out entire local tribes and obliterating the forest to fuel their own existence, which they along with Triphons feel is under threat from a distant but extreme threat the planet has never faced before.

Here a small work team of technicians stares in horror at the carnage caused to a small buggy. Out of the large Triphon and Illiak’ force of attack vehicles sent into the forest only this insignificant vehicle has returned with just one terrified Illiak’ pilot, the blue bloody hand streaks along the side giving some indication of the gunners fate. Relations with the forests local native race – the dragon like Drakar’, living in the forest have escalated as always when the two sides clash, and now the two forces are at total war with each other once more. What is so surprising to the Illiak’ work team here, as well as extremely unnerving is that the large assault force which was so easily wiped out was part of a fail-proof ambush plan to attack and hopefully capture more Drakar’ but according to the soul survivors frantic report, the Drakar’ somehow knew about this plan and instead they ambushed the Triphons and Illiaks, brutally massacring the entire force.

The Drakar’ tribes were angry after Triphons aggressively invaded their territory without permission and after a badly misunderstood negotiation that unfortunately neither race took seriously enough, the Triphons killed several Drakar’ young. Sadly neither force will now stop until the other has been wiped out to the last individual.

The Shades of Red saga is in the second stage of editing, after three years of being written, and a website with more information will be up soon.
A Commission for [link]

The authors' description:

"Illiaks, as the race depicted here are known, are a bizarre race for multiple reasons the first being their otherworldly body structure.

They exist in large numbers throughout the worlds oceans in which they hunt their small invertebrate prey.

Unlike the superficially similar but unrelated jellyfish, most species do not use contractions of the body wall to move, but rather rows of synchronously beating comb plates of fused cilia. These organs refract sunlight as they move, generating spectacular displays of colour.

Ctenophores lack both circulatory and central nervous systems, behaviour being controlled by a diffuse nerve net. Information about orientation in the water is fed to this nervous system through the apical organ, a domed structure on the aboral surface containing a small statolith (weight) suspended on four pillars of fused cilia.

Food in ctenophores is captured in several ways; in many species food is captured by sticky cells called colloblasts borne on two retractile tentacles. When food such as copepods is captured, the creature rotates its body to bring the tentacle to the mouth for ingestion. From there, prey is drawn into the pharynx and stomach for digestion.
An illustration of the internal anatomy of a Ctenophore, in this case a generalised Pleurobrachia species.

Ctenophores are a group of marine animals commonly known as Comb Jellies.

The Loosejaw is a small deep water fish which through evolution has lost the skin on the floor of its mouth. This alows the jaw to shoot out with minimal water resistance to snare prey. The red light under its eye is used to spot food, as many creatures of the deep see cannot see red light. This gives the Loosejaw its own 'sniper scope'.

However to do so the law requires an ecological damage survey to be conducted on the gas giant's moons, to be sure the operation will not damage any ecosystems on them. This large moon, only slightly smaller than earth, was found to have an advanced multicellular ecology.

The Sol Union Xenobiologist Makeba Sutphen was sent with the company when they left earth, to make sure the laws regarding alien ecosystems were followed. Here she is approached by possibly sentient natives of this large moon. Although she has a camera out now, if they get closer or show aggression she is well armed.

The species itself evolved from large aquatic creatures which resembled less broad versions of Earth stingrays. As they began to move on to land small feeding appendages on their underside grew into thicker organs to propel them, and the large side fins retracted and darkened to protect against solar radiation. Sensory appendages which stuck from the sides of the head and helped find food underwater become very useful for judging distance above water, with the eyes set so far apart.

Males, who had to compete for mating rites, developed these eye-stalks further into horns, and used them to scare off other males. They also developed a more upright stance to better compete for mates until the species was standing almost vertical. With a head now so far from the ground, the large mouth migrated to the bottom of the body, leaving the brain, eyes and breathing tube on the upper head, so as to spot danger and eat at the same time. Waste products are ejected explosively from the body from a pore on the back, to prevent contamination to the mouth.

Now able to walk upright and survive on land, the species spread across its world to become the dominant creature on the planet.
As it moves, its jaw sweeps planktonic life into its small mouth at the back of the 'net', where it is filtered and any food swallowed. The membrane it uses to hunt may look delicate, but is make from silk-like secretions and is easily repaired by glands in the egg shaped 'mouth'.
To alter its depth, a gas bladder fills much of its insides and can change volume at will, letting the Swordswallower feed using minimum energy.
Under the shadow of this specimen, a school of smaller fish-size relations of the Swordswallower seek shelter under its shadow. If I predator attacks, the feeding mouth of the large creature can be retracted, and the fish size creatures will hide inside. In return for this shelter, the fish like animals keep the Swallower free from parasites.
Trailing from the rear of this specimen are two long pale strings of gametes, releasing hundreds of reproductive cells into the sea as it swims, to mix in the water with the eggs and sperm of others swimming nearby.
