This was meant to be Marya Morevna, from the book Deathless, by Catherynne M Valente, which is even now playing in my ear. Specifically, it was meant to be the bit where she paints her face, wears a butchers apron and black fur coat and tames Baba Yagas Mortar and Pestle. I dont think its anything like that moment now- it slid off somewhere, but yeah, it still feels like it has a bit of the sensation of that part of the book, so lets call it a success. It looks nothing like any of my other work. Le sigh.

About 4.5 hours of crazy wild experimentation.

This is a custom Soldier Token that I drew for my Boyfriend (Fiance!) and Brother to use.

It took forever. It's not in a style that's typical for me, and it was really difficult. I am actually pleased with how it turned out. It's good to push yourself, I think, and I would consider myself responsible for about 40% of the pushing. A lot of people on DeviantArt commented on some of my recent painting expeditions and encouraged me to keep going in this direction, and a lot of people gave input on Tumblr. So it's really nice to be able to put up a first really "Finished" piece in what is a very new direction for me.

Okay- I put together some wallpapers using the original- I tried to make them as big as possible and cover the major aspect ratios. You can download them here. Enjoy!

Also- I dont have any plans to print it. The Avengers dont belong to me, I feel like I got lucky, and I would rather share the nostalgia, you know?

On the far right side of the page is a download button. It contains very high resolution images in a few different aspect ratios to be used for desktops. If you would like to have one printed from those files, you have my blessing. I use fedEX Kinkos, and have always gotten very acceptable results.

Tom Hiddleston and Joe Hill both saw fit to tweet this. I just can't...

I was trying to find something to spend time on, but I liked the raw crazy in the first one- I thought that it probably wouldn't really benefit from hours of carful adjustments and detailing- that may even kill whatever I liked about the sketch.

I'm not super proud of the second one, but I couldn't justify putting only one seven-minute sketch up.

Okay, a while ago I drew a really crappy concept for a Vampire Token. It was just a fun little personal take on a Magic Card, but I was always disappointed with the outcome, and I always meant to address it in some way in the future.

First, I took a shot at renovating that last drawing into something usable, but it was something of a lost cause. So I started this one, and finished it four hours later, all in a rush.

I kept thinking- there must be a way to make vampires, if not outright frightening, at least mildly disturbing again. And that's how I settled on making the victim the main focus of the whole thing. And I tried to make the vampire look like she's in no hurry, and is feeling no distress, or tension, or sympathy.

I made this for my 9-year-old penpal (who is also my partner's niece). She is a nice kid, and I am having fun sending her stuff in the snail mail. Remember how much fun it was to get stuff in the mail before it was primarily junk mail and bills?

Anyway, that's her, as Alice in Wonderland. The top is the exterior of the card, and the bottom is the inside. It folds in on the two sides, making the J in the center of the back. Get it?

It was kinda fun doing big color on a traditional piece again- I never did a lot of that, and it basically vanished from my repertoire when I went digital.

I was reading about the history of this rhyme, and it turns out that it is about Magpies, they are counting Magpies. Sometimes other birds are used, including Jackdaws and Crow, and very occasional Ravens.

I had only ever learned it as Ravens. Is that strange? Did anyone else learn the rhyme as Ravens?

Genderswapped Magneto. Drawn and inked traditionally, then colored in PS. No more than 3 hours all told.

This is one of the few things I have ever done for the express purpose of putting it up on DeviantArt. I haven't been on for so long- I have been caught up on real-world pay jobs.

I suppose that's a very, very good thing.

But anyway- I have a fond spot for AU/Genderswap/crossover fanart. I'm not a big fandom participant (more of a lurker), but I love it when people take an idea they love and riff on it, not just make homages (which are also great). It feels a lot more like storytelling, I guess.

Series? Or should I hide under the covers and see you again in six months?

UPDATE: Colored the lines and turned down the saturation. That did it. It was boring before.

I'm sorta way into monsters right now. Not that the Ankou is a monster. It's more a mythological creature. I read about it yesterday and through this together today. Working on something a little closer to minimalism, I guess.

So yeah- this is an Ankou, which is the personification of Death in the Breton culture. It seems to have influenced the modern personification of Death quite a bit, don't you think? The Ankou was the first to carry a scythe, but what made it really cool was it's origin story-

The last person to die each year in each parish became the Ankou for that parish for the following year- it was their responsibility to care for and escort the souls of the departed to the next place. In years with particularly high death rates, the parish residents could blame the Ankou for being greedy. It makes the whole thing kinda homey and almost sweet.

A lot of times the Ankou is portrayed driving a black carriage flanked by ghostly helpers- the only really nesseccary parts are the skeletal form, the big hat, and the scythe. The lantern is tangential- it has to be present, but it could be hanging from the carriage or held by someone else.

Vader- I should have expanded that image more. He should take up more space, and have less space around his head. It makes him look weak.
Boba Fett- Also a pimp. On a side note, I was absolutely floored by the awesome Mandalorian soldiers that were at PHXCon. They were all incredible and friendly and shockingly attractive in costume. I got a kick out of reminding them to smile for pictures.

I am legitimately disappointed with the scan quality of these. I'm getting better at Photoshop stuff, but I still can color correct a scan to save my life.

Death- Looks too young, but properly chipper, at least.
Delirium- Turned out unexpectedly well. You would be surprised, too, if you had seen it ten minutes before it was finished.
Snow White and Rose Red- No one got it.
Desire- Too feminine. With apologies to Patrick Nagel.
Destruction- the broken glass effect behind him is better in real life. Also the color on Barnabas. I'm calling it a win.
Bigby and Snow- The gray pattern behind them is stronger in person. I put it in because my traditional art skills are shoddy after so long on the digital front, and the placement is all wrong. It turned out okay, I guess.

I really expected more theater geeks. Ah, well. I sent them home to my old English Teacher. He deserved them.

King Lear- I couldn't think of a way to make it about the family, so I made it about the Kings/Fools thing.
Theatre du Grand Guingol- Spot the spelling error. I expected some Ann Rice fan to get this, but I'm thinking that there may not be any more Ann Rice fans left. I think that Twilight killed that particular facet of fandom.
Romeo and Juliet- Not great with the text, but I still think that the chalk outline thing was clever. May not have been the best format for it, though.
Hamlet- Again with the crap Typography. Also, ink smudge fail.
Othello- My brother came up with this concept. Shockingly effective.
Macbeth- First theater card I did. Still my favorite.

I should develop the Shakespeare one into actual posters. They would look good all cleaned up and then artfully distressed.

Crowley and Aziraphale from "Good Omens," by the incredible Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett.

Done mostly for something to do on a Saturday night, and then finished because I wanted to get some practice at text effects in illustrator. I give that experience a B-. I may not be great at vectors.

It was so much fun- I may do a series. I like how the colors turned out. That was an experiment in muted palettes, and I don't hate the result.

As a note- Crowley should definitely be wearing Aviators instead of whatever style he is attempting to rock. I offer you a popped collar in the hope that it will mitigate some of he disappointment.

Also- My brother was worried that Aziraphale looked too cool. Surely not. Geeks can't be cool. Or sexy.

Samus from the Metroid series.

This is going to be a print that will be available at Phoenix Comic Con.

I kinda dig Samus- she represents a game that managed to be pretty gender neutral- when she was revealed to be a she at the end, it was surprising, but conceivable.

Also, she kicks ass, but doesn't act like a dude. Turns out that action movie over-the-top violence isn't a male thing, it's a ridiculously fit, shockingly bold, embarrassingly negligent human thing. Cue music and a campy speech about what we have learned.

Oh- if anyone has any suggestions regarding her kinda awkward bikini top, please speak up. It looks, frankly, wrong to me, but I have time to fix it before it goes to the printer. Thanks!

So, this is the first meme I have ever completed. It was strangely fun.

I used the Diamond Vixen, an OC created by bg graham and myself for the comic book at www.section1138.com
I get that she's another example of a comic book chick who looks like every other over-sexed comic book chick. That's kinda the idea. Her existence frees up the other women in the comic to be who they are without expectation.

So, a couple of notes (which I consider pertinent)-

Disney style- crazy thing about Disney- any princess's face from before, I think, Pocahontas, can be interchanged with any other princess's face almost without noticing. Crazy.

DC Comics- I am a Marvel girl, but I don't think that the "classic" images differ _too_ too much. Stereotypical comic imagery has really contortiony poses and lots of skin on the women. I hope I got it.

Tim Burton- I enjoy Tim Burton movies, but the imagery is basically the same in each one. He has made "super creepy/beautiful goth" mainstream.

Shonen/Shoujo Manga- I'm embarrassed to say that I had to look these terms up. I knew that one meant girl and one meant boy, but I didn't know which and I didn't know how the terms translated to aesthetics. As a girl, I can attest that I like things more when they are done in pastel colors with stars and hearts all over.

Sunday Morning Cartoons- I had a lot of trouble remembering which cartoons I liked when I was a kid. For the record- I liked Chip + Dale Rescue Rangers and Gummy Bears and Care Bears and other stuff, too, including some really out-there stuff that my Dad championed in our household (Beanie and Cecil, anyone?) but the Jetsons remain one of my favorites to this day. Nice backgrounds, nice colors, groovy storylines. It's all good.
