One last note-- this is not a photo manipulation, it is a digital painting

Unless you've been hiding under a rock for the last year or so, you should know by now of whom this piece is without needing to glimpse at the title; you've probably experienced the raids of bouncing pre-teen girls at the local magazine stand, grabbing every last copy of any magazine that holds a photograph of him. And you've also probably been killed by those masses of girls who will use every resource against each other to grab the last copy. Purses, hair clips with nasty teeth, shoes... sigh. But... if you were fortunate enough to get a copy of last year's People magazine, you'll know where this photo came from. People magazine's Sexiest Man Alive. Need I say more?

All right, enough with my lame sarcasim...

This is yet another piece of Johnny Depp. Inspired by an art trade with ~ foreverdelayed. I enjoy doing this sort of thing. I hope you like it, ~ foreverdelayed

On with the boring details:

A Wacom Graphire was used, of course, to lay in the strokes. I used openCanvas 3 primarily, but I did most of his beard and hair and delicate details in Painter 8. I used Adobe Photoshop 7.0 to resize and add the title and border... . Took around... I'd say... ten hours to do... I had so much fun doing this piece. For a long time I was just painting and singing (to Rob Zombie, might I add, which is a horrifying thought).

I do hope it's pleasing to the eye. I had a tad difficulty with the neck (I just suck at painting necks), but the face was a breeze. His bone structure and skin tones were challenging, since I've never painted someone with such olive/yellow toned skin, but it was, shall I say, a unique experience. I was in love with the picture... anyways... I had a blast doing this piece. I was never frustrated with it, just my inconsistant tablet that continued to left-click lock despite my constant re-installation of the drivers and toggling of the controls and pressure sensitivity.

Please critique it well... there's nothing more I hate than comments like, "Looks cool", "it looks awesome", "Good work". It makes me want to tear ever last lock of my hair out.
I did this piece of the very lovely * bionic7 using one of his stock photos as reference ([link]). I would have painted this (I probably will later) but since my tablet is currently in a crippled state-- screw it.

I spent atleast twelve hours on this. His face took me about an hour, but the pinstripe took forever to do. Literally. Over the course of three days and tons of TV and coke to keep me alert, I finished it. I've never watched so much TV in my life-- well, listened to it... I watched Bram Stoker's Dracula, Interview with the Vampire twice, and then Dracula 2000, which I shouldn't have, since I was constantly laughing at how awful it is... it absolutely butchered the book.. sigh. Oh, and 28 Days Later, which turned out to be a pretty good movie. Then I watched anything that was on TV (which wasn't much but paid programming for viagra, male enchancement informercials with men yelling, 'omgitreallyworks!', cooking infomercials, and girls gone wild infomericials... which I swear, by the time that the guys have seen the bloody ads they don't NEED to get the DVD...) But that's not the point...

I didn't really know HOW to go about the pinstripe, so I just drew the outlines of the white stripes in the shirt and then coloured around it. Then I darkened certain areas of the shirt to give it form and such. I didn't draw the jeans in because it'd have been too distracting... but! The shirt! ...I'm all proud of it. Anyways... I'll probably end up doing more of Alex, just because he's so damn lovely.

Time: 12 hours
Pencils used: Mechanical .5mm for detailing on the hair and eyes and smaller areas of the shirt; a mechanical .7mm pencil; and two 2HB pencils (one is cheaper than the other and draws darker, which is excellent for shading... gotta love dollar-store pencils... so cheap!).

I realllly need to get some better pencils to use. Ugh....

Comments, crits, favs, whatever, are appreciated.
I'm sick as a dog. Right during exam week, the end of the year and I get sick as hell from allergies. Well, I've been doing nothing but reading and drawing. Sounds like a dream, eh? Not when you're spitting up phlem every 2 seconds and drinking down theraflu like it's a margarita! It's all I've been able to do, with a weak voice and burning fever.

I've had this reference lying around for atleast two years, and I've always wanted to sketch it, but always lost interest half-way into it. I know I pulled it from a magazine, but I don't know which. I spent about five hours on it, working on and off, while reading and sleeping, since I can't stare at something too long without getting terribly dizzy.

Five hours total, 2B pencil and .05mm mechanical pencil used, for pricise lines. I'm really bad at noses front on, so you'll have to excuse the minimal shading on it. I originally shaded most of it and got pissed at how crappy it looked and erased it.
Wow!!! I never get a painting done!! I've been so busy. Well. This is my yearly painting. I never get them done! But yeaaah.. I saw this picture and immediately fell in love with it. The two in the painting are not meant to look like the reference, only used it for a pose reference. This painting let me think about a lot of things... and I needed it. I know the title kind of sucks, but deal. I love this more than I do my Johnny Depp portrait, too.

I know, celebrity paintings are so boring, but I saw this and thought: Hey! Green! I need practice with that!... Well. I got practice. Plenty. Infact, it frustrated me to no end but I learned alot; such as, how few colours I had to use to get incredible definition and how to blend green into skin tones. This was a weekend project and I found myself burning the midnight oil last night (Saturday) and tonight (Sunday) working on it.

Mainly, I did a portrait because I've been working tediously on two pieces which include landscapes and people, and they're extremely difficult for me to do, as well as frustrating. Portraits I've always found more enjoyment in, and doing a celebrity was quick and painless, considering I didn't feel like playing around with a sketch of my own of a person.

Lost count of the hours, but I used openCanvas3, Painter 9, and Photoshop 7. I painted the skin in OpenCanvas, refined and blended it as well as did the hair and background in Painter (I love Painter 9), and then just polished it up with a border and all in Photoshop. I don't know how often I found myself painting in OpenCanvas, saving, swapping it over to Painter, doing some refining, saving, swapping over to opencanvas, painting a bit, swapping over to painter, seeing something I could fix easier in opencanvas, swapping, fixing it, seeing something I could fix in Photoshop easiest, swapping.... for about 4 hours all I did was refine the stupid thing and program swap.

I'm actually exceptionally happy with the turnout, considering I struggled with my Wacom tablet through the whole thing. I must have re-installed the drivers 4 times, restarted my computer 9, and beat my head on my desk in frustration 20. But it was worth it.

dedicated to my muse, I s'pose.
