Lot of fun to paint these iconic characters but difficult to squeeze them all in together in a cohesive manner that worked with Wonder Woman and Cheetah; the editors ended up picking the layout I thought they were going to reject. Anyway, because I'm a big JC Leyendecker fan and the game takes place during his legendary Saturday Evening Post cover stint, I decided it would be cool to do a parody issue on the city of Columbia with the two main characters as the center. But after drawing my layout, I discovered that the smart folks at Irrational Games had ALREADY done this concept with a few Post parody Game Informer covers. But to me they didn't look particularly like Leyendecker's art, who had such a distinctive style, so I said screw it and just moved forward with my original design. Now, my version doesn't necessarily look like Leyendecker's stuff either (i.e. no where near as good), but I did try make it recognizable as such in the very least while still throwing in my personal stylistic touches.

I always found the Scarlet Crusade pretty interesting so I had a pretty clear idea for how I wanted to convey Whitemane; fanatical, authoritative, and with a touch of the crazy-eyes (did I just unintentionally describe Michelle Bachmann?). It would look a bit different aesthetically if I painted it today but even now I'm pretty happy with the result.

First, Blizzard emails me a short description of the card along with some reference materials. Using that, I'll submit a traditional pencil sketch for approval (Sometimes I'll send them a grayscale value study. Depends on the deadline). Once I get notes back and hopefully a green-light to go to final art, I'll then create a rough grayscale value study which ultimately sets the stage for the final art; definitely the single most important phase in this process. Once I feel satisfied with the values, I'll start throwing color on top of the grayscale using a lot of masks and color layers. Most materials change value as color is added, so care is needed to confirm the original grayscale study still holds up. I didn't have the background laid in at that point, which isn't the smartest idea, but I wasn't sure how much the winged spell effect was going to suck up the remainder of the card space. Next, In the fourth panel, after some tweaking of the FX to look more like the actual effects in the game (I drew the wings in Illustrator to give it a super-crisp edge), I felt like she overdosed on too much of the glow-y FX stuff; looks kind of cool and powerful, but I just wanted to dial it down a bit. This leads to the fifth and final step where I cooled down some of the warm color, edited/finalized the FX, and decided to paint a background to give it a subtle sense of context and perspective. For late stage adjustments like that, it's always a good idea to save your important masks in the channels window in case you need to go back and quickly add or remove things, even on flattened art. Here, I had separate channel masks of the figure, hammer, cape, wings, foreground, etc... Very convenient for revisions, which are usually inevitable after submitting final art. Fortunately I got this card right the first time, so no revision notes from Blizzard, which is nice.

I was originally going to incorporate traditionally inked line-work into this but, due to time constraints, I was forced to fall back to my typical digital methods.

I found myself staring at a lot of 's gorgeous art while looking for costume reference because, well, he's just an incredible talent and no one else on the planet depicts these three characters better. I was originally going to incorporate traditionally inked line-work into this but, due to time constraints, I was forced to fall back to my typical digital methods.

I found myself staring at a lot of 's gorgeous art while looking for costume reference because, well, he's just an incredible talent and no one else on the planet depicts these three characters better. So yes, his work influenced me a lot here. Consciously and subconsciously. Thanks for the inspiration Adam.

Not very pleased with myself on this one. This one was a rush job. I wasn't happy with my first attempt and so I started over from scratch with only two days to do it. My only focus was trying to maintain symmetry between both Wonder Women so that one wasn't overshadowing the other in any major way.

This piece combines traditional pencil & ink with digital painting so it was fun to once again pick up a crow quill after so many years. I couldn't resist falling back to my slick aesthetic even though it isn't even close to Leonardo's style of inking. This is also one of my favorite characters from when I was reading comics as a kid. His only powers, if you can call them powers, are his photographic reflexes. That is, he can mimic the moves of anyone after just seeing them perform it one time. So he basically can do every fighting style in the Marvelverse from Captain America to Hawkeye to Daredevil, etc..

This is also one of my favorite characters from when I was reading comics as a kid. His only powers, if you can call them powers, are his photographic reflexes. That is, he can mimic the moves of anyone after just seeing them perform it one time. So he basically can do every fighting style in the Marvelverse from Captain America to Hawkeye to Daredevil, etc..
