im most happy with how the sky and water turned out, i dont use references so i just keep drawing until i feel it looks right

ITS DONE!!! and due to my clever alteration to the close-up i submitted a while ago this is probably a bit different from what you were expecting

ive had this idea in my head for months but finally decided to get it out onto the digital canvas, feels nice to finally see it all finished.
I love painting water due to the fact that i can just make it all up without having to think too much about it, theres no awkard angles and lighting is pretty straight forward once you get the hang of it all
Apart from the 2 hands (which were referenced from my own) the rest of the image is all painted from scratch with no refs.

Done using both Painter 9 and Photoshop 7, roughly 60+ hours

Did a sketch on monday of a skull & gasmask combo....its looked cool so i spent a few more hours and here is the result

as for the whole tie thing....well the poor junk-bot just wants to fit in and look as smart as the rest of man kind

i really didnt want much colour in this at all so that the tie could stand out strongest.

also didnt work too much on the background, wanted more focus on the character.

ok enough ranting.....enjoy

hey guys, its that rare time again when i actually finish something off!!!

this is a piece of contract work, the client wanted it to be stongly related to my silent silhouette piece, so thats why the colour scheme is somewhat similar.
ive spent atleast 80 hours on this....at the very least!

this image was painted using both photoshop 7 and Painter 9 along with the help from my A6 wacom graphire 2, with that said please dont keep asking what software or wacom i use.

ive really enjoyed painting this and have learnt a great deal more about painting water from scratch, same can be siad of the sky.

apart from some of the brick work and a couple of buildings near the waters edge, the rest is 100% painted from scratch.

my fingers are tired now so ill let the image do the talking

I've always been intrigued as to how blind people percieve colour and how they might imagine it, for them im guessing its more about form and sensation i guess i was inspired by these thoughts. the image is more about the feeling of colours.

hey guys...ive been saying for a while that i was gonna do some fan art for the anime series Stand Alone Complex......so i wanted to show you guys a work in progress shot of her head

this is a couple of hours worth of work, the main difficulties where getting the face to look how i wanted it to, since im working from my head its somewhat more time costly but none the less more rewarding.

by the time im finished there should be a full on Tachikoma (robo spider-tank) in there for her to sit on........full on homage to Shirow

well after a lot of time and effort, here she is..... Motoko Kusanagi

this started out life when i decided i loved the anime series so much that i wanted my very own poster of it...so i thought i would make one

i suppose this scene was inspired by episode 4 in 2nd GIG (GITS fans know the one i mean) theres an amazing scene at the end where kusanagi and her tachikoma are chased under a hail of bullets from one of the Hornet attack copters...so i painted my version of that

and dont feel so sorry for the tachikoma...its just a shell.

The latest issue of ImagineFX magazine is out on the 12th here in the UK and a week or so after that in the rest of the world. I created this image and a complete workshop on how i went about it including a 25 minute recording of myself painted it from start to finish (obviously speeded up!) you can find that on the DVD.
This image is about the fragility of beauty and how nothing lasts, the roses growing from her skin are a metaphore for this.

its been a while since i submitted anything substantional....and it feels good to do so once again

This image was inspired by a dream i had a week ago, the image shows the clearest thing i remember.
A bright light filled the sky and smoke swept through the city...i then had a close up of a guy, not sure if it was supposed to be me or not but i watched in the reflection of his goggles as the figures grew and disintergrated, then suddenly everything started to break apart and slowly float away in the wind.

VERY STRANGE

not entirely sure what is means but ive got my own thoughts on that.

anyway i hope you like it

I put this together a while ago for the Capcom game im currently working on at GRIN studios "Bionic Commando" a remake of the classic NES game from the 80's. Anyway this was meant for magazine covers and posters etc and since ive seen it in about 10 or more publications i figured i could post it here for everyone else.... pluss my gallery needed an update

just thought a warning was needed, because i know a lot of people complain when an image isnt smudged and blended pixel by pixel

since this is going to be a CD cover i made the bright red umbrella the central focus. i was walking around HMV yesterday looking at all the CDs on the shelves and none of them particularly jumped out at me, so i aimed to create something that would catch peoples eye
again this is part of the series that ive been contracted to work on, and all images will relate to my original Silent Silhouette piece i did a while back.

i created this more or less entirely in Painter 9 using the "artists Oils" tools along with some colour retouching in Photoshop 7, its taken around 15 hours im guessing.

ive really enjoyed working like this, going crazy with details etc would not have improved the image at all, infact it would have taken a lot of the life out of it.

expect more work in this sort of style

i painted this for a yet unnamed HL2 mod, but with any luck you should be seeing all the cool stuff that the team has been working on.

its not as polished as some of my other work but from what i remember of the time when this was being created i had a hell of a lot of other work on.

feel free to critique as i may just pollish off this one before the mod goes 100% public

im busy getting all the artwork wrapped up for this commision and thought i might post this here. its about 6 hours worth of work, the majority of which was spent on getting the skin tones just how i wanted them

i didnt bother over blending all the colours together because it VERY boring to do and takes away that "painted" look.

Heres the Halo piece ive being promising for so long
this is actually the second attempt, the first was an outdoor scene, it almost got finished but i couldnt stand the sight of it any longer...so i started again.

the quick story behind this

The covenent have captured hundreds of human soldiers and are currently keeping them in cold storage to use as hosts so that biological deseases can gestate within their bodies. they are then released back onto the human worlds with no memory of the events, and act as walking plagues.
The master chiefe and his men are hoping to put a stop to all of this.

As you may have noticed i've not been as active on this site as i once was, and now that this game has finally been announced i can finally open my mouth

The game in question is Bionic Commando which as some of you may know is one of Capcom's classic NES games, anyway im working as a concept artist for this game at Stockholm based developer GRIN.

And since this image has already been posted across the net i thought i might as well do the same here.

i worked on this for a while before i jetted off to Rome( which was fantastic )

ive moved on a bit now and no longer have the will to fully complete it, its at the stage where i spend hours cleaning it up and its just no fun

anyway the sky in the background is my pride and joy...never drawn a sky before so it fun was trying to figure out how i should go about it.

i really didnt want to leave this image on my hard drive for no one to see.

please understand that this is as finished as its going to get.

depending on how you look at the image its either magical or tragic...but thats up to you to decide

hey guys...long time no submit

and theres a good reason as to why! my short film im currently working on. its a short 4 minute 2D animation for my degree and this is my promotional poster...everyone on the course must make one...which i like

anyway ive not spent hours upon hours on this mainly because theres not much point in having a lovely poster if there isnt actually a finished film to go with it.... thats where im hoping you guys my be able to help, theres exactly one month left until deadline and ive still got a whole load of frames uncoloured the frame colouring itself is very easy but i simply dont have the time to colour each one myself....i also have to paint all the backgrounds and composite stuff together! i have frames ready and waiting for all those willing to help with this DA powered short...

so far ive got 5 people from DA helping on colouring and music and even someone from Pixar helping with the composting
if you wish to join my merry crew and want your name on my credits send me a note and ill fill you in on the details!!!!

you will need a graphics tablet
a copy of Photoshop
and the ability to colour things neatly
i Provide a single coloured frame for colour reference so you dont have to choose colours yourself

Just a quick preview close up of an image ive been working on this week.

Everyone asks me how i paint the hair in some of my images and i think this preview might help a bit. Basically i start with larger softer brushes to work out the main hair mass and gradually work smaller and smaller until im actually painting strands... then i use a softer slightly larger brush again to lightly shade over the finer hair so that they dont stand out too strongly.

This is all work in progress and ive only just doubled the resolution of the image, so i guess the really fine stuff is yet to go in.

HE'S BACK!!!

Yeah i was never happy with Shen ku and have for a long time wanted to improve him and turn him into a worthy character....well now i have and hes been promoted to a warlord...but still likes to get his own hands dirty

i went overboard on his armour and all the details...and particularly happy with how his new mask turned out aswell

this is the most overly detailed image ive created....and boy does my hand hurt...those clouds took up a crap load of time!

anyway i hope you enjoy looking at this....because i loved drawing it

Quake Wars E3 poster

well its certainly been a while since i last posted here, and with good reason too!

Im busy as hell these days helping out on Enemy Territory : Quake Wars so a lot of the stuff im doing doesnt get seen, however this poster i created for E3 is fine for posting... there are are 3 versions of this image, the portait, the wide landscape and this Square version that was used on the Nvidia stand as a 12 by 12 meter poster!

I had just three days to complete it, and although im not entirely happy with the end results i am happy with the fact that i didnt die in the process

as you can see i put a lot of detail into my stuff but it always starts out as abstract blobs of colour, theres a few in this image

Well i finally got my brand spanking new PC, although the monitor still hasnt arrived so ive had to make do with a 40" HD sony Bravia.....im sure ill manage

After installing Painter i decided to give it a quick go...for about an hour, time flys afterall.

Anyway im really not sure what the building is supposed to be i simply threw a hold load of shapes together, if i decide to finish this off ill redesign the structure to something more interesting

hopefully this sketch lets you see how i start things out

Seem to have a thing for hair lately....

anyway heres another Painter 7 sketch (im really starting to love painter!) it took about an hour and the whole feather thing was just an idea that developed as i drew.

certainly not as refined as my other stuff....but as you learn how to paint etc, you become more aware of the importance of forms and colour tones over the details, something im happily learning these days

theres a possibility i might 'fully' finish this.....but i like it as it is....so dont hold ya breath

cant seem to get anything finished....im yet to have an idea that actually inspires me enough to see it through to completion guess thats what most artists go through from time to time.

its another surreal sort of image....a girl floating amongst the chruning sea along with the piano dashed against the rocks.

:update: surprised to see it in the DTF section but im affraid to say this wont get the golden treatment...its as finished as it ever will be...and i like it that way

besides im now working on something else which has a great deal of water in it too

anyway it done in PS7....about 1 hour i guess.
