Hiddles WIP - updated

New ink painting of Mr Hiddleston is in the making. The underlying sketch is finished, I think. But I will probably procrastinate refining the brick wall until it's the only thing left to do ...

By that time - at the latest - I'll probably curse myself for having chosen this reference picture, but it's effing perfect! I love his expression and the contrasts (and asdfgjkl THAT CHEEKBONE!).

Please comment, I'd like to hear what you think. And if anyone has a title suggestion, please let me know. I SUCK at finding fitting titles for my art!

Oh, and I wish you all a very happy and successful 2013!

Because the left eye was too high up I adjusted it and also added some more shading. So here's the scan of what the sketch looks like now.
Yesterday I ordered a couple of sponges online which I'll use to make the skin texture (an idea I got from ~ihni). I'm already very fond of this drawing and can't wait to start with the ink.

... I need a better title.

Anyway.

I bought myself a set of markers a week ago, thought I'd give them a try.

So this is what I have so far. Doesn't look like much, yet, but it's only been 4 hours. And also, I know this is not an emotional expression (like I mentioned in the last piece I uploaded I would do) - may do one of those later. I already kinda know which picture, but first I want to finish this drawing. ... Can you still call it a drawing when it's done with markers??

Anyway, the highlight in the eyes will follow (oh look, a white gel pen ) when the eyes are done ... I had underestimated the bleeding of the markers. Total newby, as you can tell .

... If you have any tips or suggestions (or personal experiences) as how to work with markers, please feel free to share them with me.

Tom Hiddleston as Prince Hal - WIP1

This is only a detail of my newest project. Depicted is Prince Hal (from BBC's tv series The Hollow Crown - King Henry IV (part 2)), played by Tom Hiddleston.

I wasn't even going to show you any WIPs of this drawing, but I'm done for the day and got bored immediately after having put down my drawing pencil, so I thought ... why not upload a WIP .

I set myself a high goal this time, namely to make this the most detailed drawing I've ever done, and so far I'm quite happy with it. Time spent drawing: 14 hours!!!!! Hahah, and I seriously thought I'd finish it before the beginning of August...

Anyway, comments are welcome as always.

Ryan Gosling - WIP3

Here's WIP #3 of my current project.

I rescued him from under the pile of tape and paper right after posting WIP2 and have been working on him a little bit every day since. Baby steps, but due to my bachelor's thesis I don't have a lot of free time...

The head is almost finished. Gonna continue with his hand and shirt, the guitar is probably gonna be the last thing I do because ... I really don't want to think about painting it just yet.

Am still looking for a suitable title, but I'm sure I'll find one before the piece is finished .

Anyway, hope you guys enjoy these WIP thingies .

Ryan Gosling - WIP2

Whooops, what's this? Well, somewhere under the load of tape and paper is a sketch of Ryan Gosling .

So, this is the "next" step (at least the next one I'm showing you). Since the last WIP I've painted the background with black ink. After that had dried, I covered Ryan and the rest of the paper around the drawing with used paper and (only lightly adhesive!) tape. When that was done, I dipped a small brush into the pot of white ink and sprinkled it onto the paper. That's what you see above. I'm now letting it dry.

I've never done it in this order before. In previous ink paintings I've always done the besprinkling last, after I had finished the rest. The thing is, even though the tape is only lightly adhesive, it was enough to take some of the ink with it. I hope it works out better this way.

Ryan Gosling - WIP

My newest project. A sketch of Ryan Gosling (= my current obsession), done with an HB mechanical pencil (0,5mm). Gonna paint over this with ink later.

... Which reminds me: Would anyone be interested in seeing some of the steps? If not then the next thing you'll see of this is the finished piece.

Btw, sorry for the crappy quality. Had to take a picture since I stapled the drawing to a chipboard which doesn't fit into my scanner .

Does somebody have an idea for a title? I can't get "Sing us a song, you're the ~~piano~~ guitar man" out of my head, but I really don't want to name if after a Billy Joel song...

MAJOR FAILURE!!! Yes, I do not like this one at all! I'm only uploading it because I announced it yesterday.

You probably don't recognize him; this is supposed to be Matt Bomer, known as Neal Caffrey from White Collar. And I didn't do him justice at all. This drawing only looks acceptably okay from a very large distance and if you don't know what Matt Bomer really looks like.

Short background story: I had a really tough week and in order to somehow survive it I started drawing this. I know I can do better, but I didn't put any effort into it, I only had to do SOMETHING to occupy my mind.

Work in progress #2 of Henry Cavill, done in pointillism.

Very slow progress, but I don't have much time to draw at the moment. And since I haven't uploaded anything in about a month, I thought I'd share this with you guys.

Oh, and something I forgot to mention in my previous comments (something of great importance!): Mr Cavill here is the new Superman! I have never cared much about Superman, but hehe, I've seen some 'on the set' pictures, and ... ... just google it, okay. You'll know what I'm talking about (the movie is called Man of Steel, I mean HELLO!).

Okay, enough babbling about some actor most of you probably never heard of .

My new project . It's Henry Cavill again. Found this awesome picture of him online (and I even know who the photographer is!) and... I thought I'd give it a try. Pointillism, that is.

Yes, so that's it. The whole background story about what made me do a 590cm² drawing with dots and all will be explained when I upload the finished work - which might take a while.

BUT dotting is fun... somebody make a stamp!

PS. Don't know why but for some reason it will only upload the picture vertically... can't change it at the moment, I'll try it again later but until then you'll just have to tilt your heads. Sorry 'bout that .

Just a little sneak peek of what I'm working on now. Can you recognize who this eye belongs to? That's right, it's Ian Somerhalder's. I'm drawing him as Damon Salvatore (from The Vampire Diaries) again, this time it's going to be a very dark and more elaborate drawing of him than the last one I did.

I'm already about half way done with it. Now comes the not so much fun part: drawing the hair and background... Oh well, gotta get it over and done with, right ?

Remember this? I started it almost one year ago. I haven't forgotten 'bout it, just wasn't in the right mood for continuing drawing... Well, for the past few days I have been at it again, so I thought it's a great time to show you another WIP.

Sorry for the slightly unfocused picture. When it's finished I will take it to my dad's office and scan it there (he has an A3 scanner *yay*).

So, now that I've updated you on this piece I probably have to tell you that I'm already working on another new drawing which I will certainly finish before this one . It's only something little (not miniature, though), so it hopefully won't take me long finishing it.

So I'm back at drawing Tomo. I guess this is the last WIP to show you before I finish it hopefully some time soon.

I think it's turning out okay, but I hate the paper I chose! Details are really hard to achieve and the smudging doesn't turn out the way I want it to. Stupid paper. But oh well, it wasn't supposed to be a really detailed drawing anyway *shrugs*.

_{Hmm, judging by your overwhelming response to my last WIP of Tomo, you don't like this drawing very much - and with "overwhelming response" I mean (almost) total ignorance. Wonder why that is. I'm not fishing for compliments or anything but normally you guys are more responsive to my work. You know that I don't bite and that critique is always welcome (as long as it's constructive).

That being said, I think the more I work on this the better it gets (... as it should, I know ). Am still not looking forward to drawing the hair and sunglasses, but when it comes to "To study or not to study", at the moment I'd rather not study and draw terrifying stuff instead.

It's still very rough, but I intend to refine some parts. I'm just showing you this to let you know what I'm working on (yes yes, yet another new drawing...). I should be studying instead of drawing, my final exams are not that far away anymore.

Okay, now the usual (and hopefully less boring) stuff:

Materials:
- HB, 2B, 3B and 8B pencils
- kneadable eraser
- some kind of paper... (too lazy to check)

I still have to think of a title, no "Boom" moment so far... Maybe something with 'Teddy bear' in it?

WIP1 of the talented actor Tim Roth. Told you another drawing would follow .

I'm trying out a new shading technique: drawing tiny circles. It's not as time-consuming as I had thought it would be but it still takes some getting used to (I'm always tempted to go back to my usual shading technique).

Started this yesterday because I didn't want to study (even now I should be preparing for a presentation but this is much more fun ). After having uploaded this I'm going to eat some yummy yummy lunch, and after that: more drawing.

Materials:
- F, HB, 2B, 3B, 4B and 8B graphite pencils
- HB mechanical pencil
- Q-tip
- kneaded eraser
- reference picture

Obviously this is more than an ink stain on a sheet of paper. It's supposed to be the actor Tim Roth, you know, the one from "Lie to me". Oh well, it wasn't meant to look like him, just wanted to do something creative-ish. So here you go.

Materials:
- Watercolour (blue, green, red/pink and brown)
- Black drawing ink
- Sketching paper, water and brush, of course
- HB mechanical pencil
- Black coloured pencil
- Reference picture of Mr. Roth

Time: about one hour? Just the time I spent drawing I mean, not waiting for the water to dry up.

Someday I'll have to do a better drawing of him. With real details. Yes, this is a threat .}

_{I'm starting to dislike this drawing! Something is off and those damn light bulbs aren't as white as they're supposed to be (and YES I'M USING A WHITE PENCIL)!

Still working on the hair, but it's almost done. What else? Of course on the bulbs (there are even MORE to come... ), shirt and neck / torso.

I don't think that this drawing is gonna take me much longer, BUT (there's always a 'but') tomorrow is the start of a new term at University and I can already sense that I won't have much time to draw anymore. How I hate new terms! Ughh....

Oh well, not much one can do, right ?

WIP3 - Were you ever a dreamer

Woohoo, today's a good day. I finally got the results on my latest exam and to my surprise it went great ! So this was the perfect reason for me to take a day off and draw.

I know it's only a little progress, but I'm totally happy with it. Drawing the hair is (for the first time in my life, I think) quite easy and I could look at the reference picture all day long ... Uhm, I think that actually might be what I did the whole day long (might explain the little progress ).

Anyway, thought I should show you what I have so far and give you a glimpse at the material I use.

Material (from left to right):
Q-tip, brush (said brush I had an epiphany with here), (black, dark gray, light gray and white) coloured pencils from CARAN d'ACHE and two different kinds of erasers.

And, on top of everything, I succeeded in taking an even better picture of the drawing - yay!

_{So, the second WIP of my newest drawing . I don't think that I've ever been able to upload 2 WIPs of the same drawing in one day!

Had to correct the nose - it was WAY to big! The beard is coming along fine as well (phew !), but I'm not looking forward to drawing the rest of the hair...

Still using the same material as before + a black-coloured pencil. I think that this picture is better then the last one? Tried my best anyway, but there is still room for improvement. One day I'll have to buy myself an A3 scanner!!!!!

Hey guys, guess who I'm drawing ! Yes, it's JARED LETO... again .

Yesterday I stumbled over this AWESOME reference pic of him, and it became my new desktop. Last night I couldn't sleep because I kept thinking about this picture. So then I decided to draw it - and fell asleep immediately . That's got to be a sign, right ?!

So I've been drawing for about 3 hours. At first I thought "Oh boy, why did you have to use this technique!!! It looks horrible", but after having had a good lunch I continued drawing and now I like it very much.

Sorry for the crappy quality, it's too big to scan so I had to take a picture. But I'll try and make a better one next time.

Materials:
- 2B graphite pencil for sketching
- Smooth black paper for presentation / chalk illustration from CANSON
- One white blend charcoal pencil that I bought in the US a couple of years ago and never used
- Two different shades of gray
- Q-tip for blending
- Eraser
- Reference picture

I hope that this will turn out well, I'm a little afraid of drawing the beard... So if you never see or hear anything of that drawing again, it's been kidnapped and held to ransom, which I can't afford paying.

_{Finally all my exams are over and I have some free time on my hands !!! Decided to finish the top drawing of the tryptich so that I can move on to the other two and don't have to keep thinking about it.

Shannon is almost done, his hand still needs some work done but I'm too tired to change anything now. I still have to work on Jared's kilt and part of his leather jacket. After all that I can concentrate entirely on the grass and the groupies .

Studies of the human body

This is really old, done in 2006 in art school.

Our art teacher copied a few drawings from an "How to draw human figures" kinda book, so we had to copy the copies of the human body, so to speak.

What I remember most about this assignment was that our teacher told us to "practice drawing human anatomy", but what she really meant was "Do as many drawings in the given time as possible, those with the most drawings will get the best mark".... I got the best mark .

Materials (as far as I can remember) were:
- graphic pencils
- watercolour (pink... yuck, WHAT WAS I THINKING???)
- water and brush, obviously
- some blue coloured pencils, don't remember the brand
- really cheap paper. The brownish one.
Time: about two hours? Three?

Anyway, thought I could show you something different from my usual work. And since I don't have time to draw at the moment (and thus haven't got anything to show you guys ) and am too tired to study, I made this instead .

Ok, not that pretty, but it's part of the process, so here ye are. And don't get too excited about me showing you the second drawing (implying that I completed the first) - I HAVEN'T, I just.... didn't.... want to.... continue! Thought I might get all excited 'bout this drawing again when I start with the middle one ('cause, as you might have noticed, I have been doing a lot of other drawings, ok just 2, but anyway, DETAILS!).

As you can read there on that piece of tape, I'm currently using my beloved 9B pencil, which btw is driving me mad 'cause it's ruining the paper!!!! Pencil dust all over the place!!! That's why there's all that tape. Protectin' the paper (*that's what you get when you want great contrasts...*).

I'm pissed! And just having realized that I'm pissed a lot when writing comments doesn't really help this situation!

Since WIP4 I've been drawing every day for a couple of hours. I had realized that those guys I was drawing didn't really resemble the guys from 30 Seconds to Mars - AT ALL!!! So I've spent a lot of time fixing as much as I could, just to fail at Tomo's hands!!! I don't like his hands! AT ALL!!! And his face!

But I'm actually quite satisfied with Jared (who no longer has a 'Michael Jackson'-ish nose) and Shannon (who gave me a hard time as well) - but dkgheklrglkjvbhödtisbh TOMO!!!

I should probably tell you that University starts again tomorrow. At 8am. I have to leave the house at 6.30. So another reason why I'm pissed.

Anyway, the thing I'm really looking forward to is uploading the WHOLE three drawings and show you what title I've come up with ('cause I'm not gonna tell you 'till it's finished.... 'cause I love that title).

WIP4 - 30STM

I'm progressing. Slowly, but nonetheless. So this is what my current project looks like. I finally started drawing the upper picture, meaning correcting proportions and likeness, adding contrast, shading etc.

I think Jared now looks more like Jared in the upper drawing, don't you think? Before, something was off... might still be, but it's better now.

Using B, 2B, 4B and 6B pencils, Q-Tips (yay for another new blending technique) and a kneaded eraser.

AND LOOK AT MY NEW DRAWING BOARD !!!!!!! Isn't it great?!?!?! Bought it last Monday, along with some new pencils (just to stack up my stock), a whole bunch of paper and some other small stuff. It feels so good not having to draw on a thin piece of cardboad anymore.

Ughhh, this is taking so much longer than I thought... Working on the last pic - that background is really boring, so my motivation is like nowhere right now, but I'm hanging in there, looking forward to finally starting the drawing phase (I'm actually still sketching...).

But I'm also very excited to announce that I'll buy myself a real drawing board on Monday (one that isn't made out of sucky chip, like the one I bought last Tuesday). And maybe I'll buy some other stuff, too.

WIP2 - 30STM

Don't really know what to tell you here...

I'm working on this every day, as you can see I've already started sketching the second part. About the blank space on the upper drawing: I'm still undecided whether I should draw in the man who's standing there on the reference or not (I tend towards 'rather not', but in that case I'll have to figure out what else to draw there instead).

Still using only a B pencil, my beloved kneaded eraser and the brush you see lying there.

About the contrasts/shading: it's very roughly done 'cause it's not gonna be like this in the end - this is just... an underlayer, or whatever the right word for it is (but you get my point ).

Unfinished Hugh Jackman

Look what I found . This is just one of many unfinished drawings lying around at home. I think I started it shortly after Hugh Jackman hosted the Academy Awards in (I think) 2009.
I problably spent 2-3 hours drawing this, so it's been lying around for more than a year now... Not sure I'm gonna finish it... but thought I should show it to you guys anyway . Proportions are not quite accurate, but I usually work that out while drawing.

Sorry for the poor quality, I took a picture of the drawing (I'm not so fond of my scanner, which does whatever pleases him and not me!). Maybe - that is, if I take working on it up again... someday - I'll upload a better pic.

I'm finally active again . After a period of complete lack of inspiration and motivation I started a new project again.

So here I'm presenting.... one third of a drawing. An incomplete one third. As you can see there are going to be three smaller drawings in the end, and I just started sketching the one on the top. And all I wanna say is that it's about 30STM - obviously.

And it's going to be something new, something I've never done before and wanted to do for a long time. It takes a bit getting used to draw smaller, but it's fun and challenging .

Pictures taken from my desk, which I hardly use (normally I draw in front of my computer) but decided to give another chance (it's actually more because of the size of the drawing... drawing on A3 in front of my computer doesn't really work that well). You also see some of my tools I use, at the moment I'm just working with a B pencil and an eraser.

This is quite different from my usual work, but I really love working on it. I still can't believe it; I'm going to see him and his band live on March 23rd in Zurich ! So drawing him singing just makes sense, doesn't it.

The part I'm drawing on now just sucks! Only hair and torso left to draw (and his necklace...).

This drawing is killing me; bad choice of paper and a reference pic slightly too small to see all the details (but in a way I'm glad I don't have to draw more)!

WIP Sylar and Zachary Quinto

And another unfinished work... For a while I watched "Heroes" and loved how Zachary Quinto played Sylar.

I couldn't make up my mind whether I should draw Sylar or Zach, so - as you can see - I combined both into one drawing. The idea was to show the "nice" side of a person with the "evil" side always watching over your shoulder...

Not sure I'll ever complete the drawing... kind of lost the interest in it...

WIP Anthony Hopkins

A shy try with coloured pencils... Supposed to be the actor Anthony Hopkins. The idea was to make the background the same blue as his eyes in order to make them more striking.

This is actually an old drawing, I think I started it in 2006 or 2007 when I wanted to do something different from my pencil drawings...

Not sure whether I should start working on it or not (I think rather not), certainly not at this moment, since I have several other unfinished drawings lying around...
