Some shape study things, and some more pos/neg interplay; I love that stuff. I like how Matthew becomes one with Morpheus' hair and cloak here; the resulting shape makes me happy. It's reached the point where the character itself isn't as much of a focus anymore - I'm more interested in the fashion and the design and the detail, and really making it interesting to look at from other standpoints.

This was in a sketchbook, on paper; and a BIG ONE - one of those 11x14" books. I don't enjoy working on sketchbook paper; it forces me to change my technique. But I liked the way this one looked overall. This one was done primarily with ballpoint pen, with a little bit of brush pen for the deep blacks. ]]>

I like the notion of placing very detailed passages alongside very quick, broad strokes. And although this one doesn't get as quick and broad as I normally do, it's a step. Like I said, an exercise.

I might drop this into Photoshop one of these days and try to fix all the problems - but I doubt it. Onward...

I've been thinking a lot about putting a little more storytelling in these things, and this was a step towards that. I've tried to create a self-portrait composition, like she's taking her own photo. I had meant to make it square, like a Polaroid, and put a big fat white border at the bottom; but by the time I got the composition down, it would never have fit. But anyway, you get the idea. Next time.
