I remember how honored I was when a friend asked me to design a tattoo for her. Having people use my illustrations as iPod/iPhone skins would feel kind of like that, but less extreme of course.

A few days ago I decided to finally try out Society6 as a friend had recommended to me, and to get a feel of things, I spruced up some old artwork to make them print-ready.

There's a painting of mine that people have been requesting as a print, even on shirts and other things.

For the original artwork, I used blue pencil and watercolors.

Because of the square cropping, it would be awkward to place on merchandise so I tried out a different way of framing. I fixed up the colors and added some other things digitally as well, and here we are. :)

I wanted to focus on the playful but wholesome side of pin-ups. I decided to design a pin-up girl for a modern guy — maybe depicting that special girl next door who shares his interest in stuff like Lord of the Rings, and whose laugh can turn bad days around. I drew an image he might keep in mind to get him through particularly rough days. :)


I kept the rendering and colors relatively simple because this is meant to go on a shirt. I got the idea to draw it because of the pin-up design challenge on Threadless.


While working on this, I was listening to "You Always Make Me Smile" by Kyle Andrews :pointr: [link] It's a catchy, upbeat, happy song that kept me going even when I nearly tossed this illustration completely.

Some months ago, I got a phone call from an unknown number. I was hesitant to answer at first, but something made me feel as though I ought to take the call. It turns out it was someone calling on behalf of the founder and chairman of the multinational audio equipment companyBEHRINGER. He wanted to commission me to make paintings for his new house.

I was thrilled and immensely grateful for the opportunity of course, but also a little intimidated. He's a great man who has achieved so much through his passion for music. You may read about his story here :pointr: [link] It's really inspiring. And it makes me all the more thankful that someone who could have chosen any other artist he wanted, had welcomed my work into his home.

A meeting was scheduled for us to meet and talk about the paintings after he had flown into the Philipppines. He greeted me with a bright smile, and talked to me like an old friend. I showed him painting samples on my laptop so that we could decide on a style. He chose one of my old works as a peg, and asked me to make a series based off it. He said he'd like me to be free to decide what else I'd like to do with it. But I felt he ought to have a say about it, too.

I asked him, "Is there any particular imagery you would like to be present in the paintings?"
His piercing blue eyes lit up and he said, "I was waiting for you to say that. Let's keep it all about the music."

He gave me three instruments to work with — a piano, a saxophone, and a guitar.


:bulletblue: About the painting:
This, of course, is my painting centered on the guitar. Apart from showing the instrument, the rest of the composition is a representation of how I feel about the sound of a guitar.

I get asked about this a lot so — The torn paper effect was not actually done with paper. I layered gesso and acrylic paint to achieve that. :D It was one of the things Mr. Behringer really liked about the old painting of mine that he chose as a peg. It added layers of dimension, and made it feel as if there is a story to be told. It also served as a good unifying factor for the three paintings in this series.

I'm very happy with how the piece turned out, though of course this photo is but a shadow of the real thing. I put a lot into the textures, layering of colors, subtle tonal values and metallic detailing — things that can't properly be seen through photos. But I hope you enjoy this, and thank you for reading. :)

Had some beautiful rainy weather a few weeks back. Lots of rain. Here's one of the pictures I took after having dinner at the gazebo one night, on the walkway leading back to our main house. It was a chilly, wet night. Rain dripped through the vines that grew around the passageway. Their roots hung down like hair and would cling to my umbrella. Made the short walk a little creepy, but also slightly surreal. I was thankful for the lantern light.

A number of people requested for this shot in higher resolution so here you go, guys. Glad you enjoy my everyday photos as well. :) For those who wanted to use it as wallpaper, I uploaded it at 1500 x 1000. Just click Download. I would have posted it at full resolution but I felt it was too grainy. Had to crank up my ISO because of the low lighting and I didn't want to stand in the rain too long.

This is a collaboration with Japonista Sole, a company that produces traditional Japanese footwear with a contemporary twist. I'm actually a big fan of their shoes so it was such a fantastic opportunity to be contacted by them to do promotional work for their brand. They also gave me absolute creative freedom for the photography, which I loved. :D
