So, the 365 project is OFFICIALLY DONE!! =O What's next, you might ask? I thought about doing it for another year, but have decided against it. I know I could do it, but I don't feel it necessary to prove it lol. One year is enough. I'm clearly dedicated to my work. I think I'll transition back to posting more fine-art like shots, instead of daily crap-I-need-to-find-something-interesting-to-photograph shots. I've got plenty of stuff from 2011 I have yet to release and re-edit, so I've got my work cut out for me. Don't worry though, none of this means I won't continue to update my gallery often! I have a feeling it'll be tough not to take every day now But instead of uploading a mediocre shot every day, I'll simply upload what I really like. I'll be taking just as many photos, but I won't upload it unless I'm truly proud of it

I might make a journal with some tips for anyone else who wants to start a 365 Project. For now though, I'll just leave you with one (or two): take your camera everywhere, and take photos of anything that interests you.

Went to Boys Town today hoping to see an eagle or an owl or some type of interesting wildlife. Never saw any of those after driving around a bit, so I headed over to the pond to try some geese shots. Usually they like to hiss and run at you if you get too close, but these two were extremely docile. This was shot at 10mm, if that gives you any idea. Wide-angle 10mm geese portraits... definitely something I didn't expect to be shooting today Not sure if they were a mated pair or what. One of them kept trying to pick bits of grass from the other's mouth. They also had an obsessive fascination with my camera lens hood/strap. I'll get a video of that up later ]]>

This sums up the day pretty well. Awesome subjects to shoot, but not being able to shoot them. We were driving back to Omaha from Kansas City and one of our tires was low, so we couldn't stop. We probably could have, but dad wanted to get back home as soon as possible. Took this as we passed a few eagles in a tree on the side of the interstate. Can't describe how frustrating it is to drive only a couple miles from a wildlife refuge you go to annually, and not stop. Didn't get to go there this year at all. *sigh* Oh well. Bring on spring and storms, plz. ]]>

Not bad considering we were going 60mph at the time. Telephoto shots from a moving car are tough lol. Saw this hawk perched atop a pine tree and had to try my hand at getting a sharp shot. Key is to stop the lens down a little bit (even if that means ISO'ing up a tad) in case the focus misses a bit. Even more crucial than that, though, is having patience for the millions of shots that autofocus will screw up for you ]]>

It was recently discovered that it's slightly radioactive (it's half-life is more than a billion times the estimated age of the universe). It is known for it's stair-stepped structure, and exhibits iridescent colors upon oxidization.

Basically, it's a badass metal that reminds me of Tetris ]]>

Had some really colorful iridescence photos from today as well, but since I've already shared a few of those in this project, I figured I'd show you this instead: a hole punch cloud. The white cloud in the middle is precipitating from the cloud deck above. This happens when the supercooled water droplets of a cloud layer are disturbed. When droplets are supercooled, they remain liquid, but become solid (frozen) when they are disturbed. This usually happens when a plane descends down through the supercooled layer. Droplets of the clouds are liquid, plane flies through them, droplets freeze and begin to precipitate like snow.

Got up early this morning in hopes of catching comet Lovejoy rising 30 minutes before the sun. No such luck. It would have been a very faint sighting anyway, but the cirrus were in just the wrong spot and dashed any hopes of that. Made for a pretty cool sunrise above a suburban scene though! A little more special for me because that's the old neighborhood I used to live in If you look on the far left side, you can just barely make out a yellow sun pillar ]]>

Actually got some pretty sweet frost images this morning, but given the fact that I've posted snowflake images for the last couple days, I thought I'd mix it up. Froze my toes off for this, so the pain endured has somewhat biased my choosing of this as my image of the day lol. Didn't stay outside over the course of the 2 hours it was taken, but I managed to take 30 minutes to set it up. Had some fog roll in towards the end, which gave the horizon that orange glow. Temperatures got much colder than expected, which resulted in the formation of some hoar frost crystals. Luckily they just formed on my lens hood and not the glass lol. Check it out:

Still happy with a few of last night's "bright flake" images though Difficult to shoot but totally worth it. Loved how this flake had that extra little arrow-like point on the left hand side lol.

Had a rather brisk walk through Elmwood Park yesterday morning. Morning lows dipped just below zero. I'm guessing we were somewhere in the single digits as I walked back from class. Halfway through Elmwood, I decided to start running to keep my toes warm. I have terrible circulation, so I always worry about my extremities during cold weather lol. I was already about 3/4ths of the way back to the dorm, but I decided to hop on a shuttle for the last quarter just to be safe ]]>

Yesterday afternoon, we received a few flurries from some passing afternoon snow showers. Unfortunately, my class didn't get out 'til 4, so the snowflakes falling un sunlight outside were just torture. When I got back to the dorm, I realized I had left my keys in my room. Had to go to the clubhouse building to get someone to unlock the dorm door for me. Quickly swapped my 10mm for my reversed kit lens and went outside to take photos before the light was completely gone. Tough to shoot in such low light (the sun sets too damn early) but I managed to get a few clear shots of these stellar dendrites ]]>

Actually shot a star trail earlier in the day (or technically, night lol), but I didn't feel like it was strong enough to be my image of the day. Tough to get a real unique trail when you can't leave your dorm porch. Chose this for the image of the day simply because I loved the light on it, very dramatic ]]>

Caught an incredibly bright sundog this afternoon after horticulture class. Completely random. There weren't any cirrus to speak of around, so I definitely wasn't expecting optics. Guessing this sundog occurred in a small patch of virga ( [link] ) falling from the clouds. Pretty crazy colors (nothing more than the regular vibrance/contrast post-processing), can't recall capturing such evident purples in a sundog before! ]]>

Star trail shot from grandma's backyard. Debated whether or not the clothesline added a good element to the photo or it was just distracting. Think it gives it a nice sense of place though. Usually these guys are pretty skittish and run away in an instant. This guy was pretty slow though. I'm guessing he was a bit lethargic after weathering many mornings of cold temperatures. Even though he was slow, it still took a fair bit of conquering my fears to get in close for these macro shots lol. This isn't even the highest magnification I got. One shot essentially fills the frame with just his eyes. To get that one, my lens had to be between his legs. He was a couple inches in length. Took a photo with a ruler for size reference here: [link] though maybe this one (minimum magnification) gives you a better idea of his size: [link]

Either way, I'm happy to be getting good macro shots of insects this late in the year. Even if they are a tad creepy ]]>

My first legitimate star trail! I didn't think many stars would show up (shooting from midtown Omaha = bad light pollution), so I was quite pleased to see it turn out this well. This is an 8-hour trail, taken during the time frame from about 8:30pm to 4:30am. Approx. 900 30-second images.
Note: the camera wasn't bumped, I need to send my lens back to the factory for its softness *sigh* ]]>

Got down into the mid to low 20s last night, but you'll hear no complaints from me. Our dorm's heater was on the fritz and decided that 95 was a reasonable temperature for the night. No way to bring the temperature down from that no matter how I messed with it. Had to open my window and turn on a fan to get my room to a reasonable temperature lol. I was surprised the frost stuck around so long this morning. This was taken right around 10am after I got back from my morning class. Hello, winter ]]>

Brought the wrong lens to shoot the sunset this evening. Dashed out the door thinking the 10mm would be a better choice than the kit lens. I was hoping the sunset would fill the whole sky, but this is the most it ever ended up doing. I guess using the 10mm is kind of like putting all your eggs in one basket. If things go according to plan, you get wide, dramatic images. It more cases than not though, the range of the kit lens proves to be the safer bet (especially the way sunsets have been going lately... seems like it's been ages since I've seen one that really called for a wide lens). Live and learn ]]>

After coming out of my speech class this morning, I was greeted by one of the best displays of iridescence I've seen to-date. These clouds were located at the leading edge of a long band of cirrocumulus stretching north all the way out of Nebraska. The rest of the clouds were too thick to produce iridescence. I'm guessing these exhibited such vivid colors due to the fact that they were newly formed, and therefore had water droplets of very similar size and shape. ]]>

Another rather crummy image lol. Today was just a bland day for photography. Had homework to do, which wasn't a big deal because the lighting was never really that great anyway. Pretty much just cloudy/drizzly all day. Took this shot of a bunch of leaves dumped by a tree on my way back from class. ]]>

A great example of why you need to take back-up photos if you're doing a 365 project lol. This was accidentally shot at ISO 12800 (hence the grain), but I really didn't have any other shots from the day. Oh well, guess it gives it a nice gritty texture ]]>

Shooting the geese at Boys Town lake. Had some nice fall color reflected in the water A really nice couple was there feeding the geese bread, and when they saw me, the man ran over to me and said he'd be interested in purchasing prints of some of my photos. Score! ]]>

Was hoping I'd get my photo of the day from a vibrant sunset, but it didn't end up lighting up quite as much as I was hoping. There were a few bright clouds, but there wasn't enough coverage to take a really good photo of it. Luckily the sun looked rather photogenic as it set behind a few clouds on the horizon. All I need now is the silhouette of a giraffe and someone to sing the Lion King theme ]]>

Here's a fun little phenomenon known as Crow Instability. Here we're looking at a plane contrail. But the contrail has a funny shape. In this case, it has morphed from a regular contrail into these odd segments of doughnut rings and tubes. This is caused when the wingtip vortices from the plane interact with the contrail, causing the vapor to spin into these weird little shapes. I managed to get some video of the phenomenon as well, which you can watch here: [link] to get an idea of how they are formed and how their motion looks. ]]>

Had a period of VERY heavy snow today. Only amounted to an inch or two, but the snowfall rates were simply incredible while it lasted. I was almost late to class because I wanted to take photos of it while it was good (I knew it would taper off during class). This ended up being my favorite photo of the day, shot in the school library's parking lot ]]>

More suburban exploration today. Discovered that the neighborhood behind the dorms is far less sketchy than anticipated. Wrote down the serial numbers of all my gear only to find a neighborhood full of Land Rovers and middle-aged white people lol. Might have to post a few more photos from my walk. The little brick cottage houses fit perfectly into the landscape, dug back into little knolls and dwarfed underneath century-old trees. My kind of place to live. Hopefully I manage to become a famous photographer so I can afford to live there with my wife and family someday ]]>
