Bring it on, 2012!<br /><br />So, the 365 project is <b>OFFICIALLY DONE!!</b> =O What's next, you might ask? I thought about doing it for another year, but have decided against it. I know I could do it, but I don't feel it necessary to prove it lol. One year is enough. I'm clearly dedicated to my work. I think I'll transition back to posting more fine-art like shots, instead of daily crap-I-need-to-find-something-interesting-to-photograph shots. I've got plenty of stuff from 2011 I have yet to release and re-edit, so I've got my work cut out for me. Don't worry though, none of this means I won't continue to update my gallery often! I have a feeling it'll be tough <i>not</i> to take every day now <img src="http://e.deviantart.net/emoticons/w/wink.gif" width="15" height="15" alt=";)" title=";) (Wink)"/> But instead of uploading a mediocre shot every day, I'll simply upload what I really like. I'll be taking just as many photos, but I won't upload it unless I'm truly proud of it <img src="http://e.deviantart.net/emoticons/b/biggrin.gif" width="15" height="15" alt="=D" title="=D (Big Grin)"/><br /><br />I might make a journal with some tips for anyone else who wants to start a 365 Project.             </media:community>            <media:description type="html"><![CDATA[ Day 364 of 365<br /><br />Went to Boys Town today hoping to see an eagle or an owl or some type of interesting wildlife. Never saw any of those after driving around a bit, so I headed over to the pond to try some geese shots. Usually they like to hiss and run at you if you get too close, but these two were extremely docile. This was shot at 10mm, if that gives you any idea. Wide-angle 10mm geese portraits... definitely something I didn't expect to be shooting today <img src="http://e.deviantart.net/emoticons/x/xd.gif" width="15" height="15" alt=":XD:" title="XD"/> Not sure if they were a mated pair or what. One of them kept trying to pick bits of grass from the other's mouth. They also had an obsessive fascination with my camera lens hood/strap. Went to Platte River State Park and set up just south of their small lake, looking north and keeping an eye on aurora plot observations. Auroras didn't end up happening, but we did get a few decent star trails! Awesome subjects to shoot, but not being able to shoot them. We were driving back to Omaha from Kansas City and one of our tires was low, so we couldn't stop. We probably <i>could</i> have, but dad wanted to get back home as soon as possible. Took this as we passed a few eagles in a tree on the side of the interstate. Can't describe how frustrating it is to drive only a couple miles from a wildlife refuge you go to annually, and not stop. Didn't get to go there this year at all. *sigh* Oh well. Telephoto shots from a moving car are tough lol. Saw this hawk perched atop a pine tree and had to try my hand at getting a sharp shot. Key is to stop the lens down a little bit (even if that means ISO'ing up a tad) in case the focus misses a bit. The white cloud in the middle is precipitating from the cloud deck above. This happens when the supercooled water droplets of a cloud layer are disturbed. When droplets are supercooled, they remain liquid, but become solid (frozen) when they are disturbed. No such luck. It would have been a very faint sighting anyway, but the cirrus were in just the wrong spot and dashed any hopes of that. Made for a pretty cool sunrise above a suburban scene though! It would have been a very faint sighting anyway, but the cirrus were in just the wrong spot and dashed any hopes of that. Made for a pretty cool sunrise above a suburban scene though!             </media:community>            <media:description type="html"><![CDATA[ Day 344 of 365<br /><br />Actually got some pretty sweet frost images this morning, but given the fact that I've posted snowflake images for the last couple days, I thought I'd mix it up. Froze my toes off for this, so the pain endured has somewhat biased my choosing of this as my image of the day lol. Didn't stay outside over the course of the 2 hours it was taken, but I managed to take 30 minutes to set it up. Had some fog roll in towards the end, which gave the horizon that orange glow. Temperatures got much colder than expected, which resulted in the formation of some hoar frost crystals. Luckily they just formed on my lens hood and not the glass lol. Turns out I was a fool for shooting these at night initially lol. Using the sun as a light source makes for much faster shutter speeds and lower ISOs than a porch flood light. Only problem is daytime melting, so once you find your crystal, you've gotta shoot quick. Using the sun as a light source makes for much faster shutter speeds and lower ISOs than a porch flood light. Only problem is daytime melting, so once you find your crystal, you've gotta shoot quick. Unfortunately, my class didn't get out 'til 4, so the snowflakes falling un sunlight outside were just torture. When I got back to the dorm, I realized I had left my keys in my room. Had to go to the clubhouse building to get someone to unlock the dorm door for me. Quickly swapped my 10mm for my reversed kit lens and went outside to take photos before the light was completely gone. There weren't any cirrus to speak of around, so I definitely wasn't expecting optics. Wolf spider. <img src="http://e.deviantart.net/emoticons/o/omg.gif" width="15" height="15" alt=":omg:" title="OMG"/><br />Usually these guys are pretty skittish and run away in an instant. This guy was pretty slow though. I'm guessing he was a bit lethargic after weathering many mornings of cold temperatures. Even though he was slow, it still took a fair bit of conquering my fears to get in close for these macro shots lol. This isn't even the highest magnification I got. One shot essentially fills the frame with just his eyes. To get that one, my lens had to be between his legs. He was a couple inches in length. I didn't think many stars would show up (shooting from midtown Omaha = bad light pollution), so I was quite pleased to see it turn out this well. This is an 8-hour trail, taken during the time frame from about 8:30pm to 4:30am. Our dorm's heater was on the fritz and decided that 95 was a reasonable temperature for the night. No way to bring the temperature down from that no matter how I messed with it. Had to open my window and turn on a fan to get my room to a reasonable temperature lol. I was surprised the frost stuck around so long this morning. This was taken right around 10am after I got back from my morning class. The clouds were just right, some low level moist clouds, coupled with the COLD temps, meant that there would likely be ice crystals producing atmospheric optics. Unfortunately, I had class <img src="http://e.deviantart.net/emoticons/f/frown.gif" width="15" height="15" alt=":(" title=":( (Sad)"/> Tyler Burg caught a great CZA while I was in class and uploaded a photo to Twitter here: <a class="external" href="http://www.deviantart.com/users/outgoing?http://twitpic.com/7eyi8z">[link]</a> I hate missing optics, especially while sitting in a frustrating class (drawing with colored pencils for 2 hours...blech). I caught my own circumzenithal arc later in the day, though it wasn't nearly as bright as Tyler's. Don't let the sand volleyball court in the foreground fool you, it was very cold lol. Guess I can't complain though, especially after seeing so few optics last winter. Dashed out the door thinking the 10mm would be a better choice than the kit lens. I was hoping the sunset would fill the whole sky, but this is the most it ever ended up doing. I guess using the 10mm is kind of like putting all your eggs in one basket. If things go according to plan, you get wide, dramatic images. It more cases than not though, the range of the kit lens proves to be the safer bet (especially the way sunsets have been going lately... seems like it's been ages since I've seen one that really called for a wide lens). These clouds were located at the leading edge of a long band of cirrocumulus stretching north all the way out of Nebraska. The rest of the clouds were too thick to produce iridescence. Here we're looking at a plane contrail. But the contrail has a funny shape. In this case, it has morphed from a regular contrail into these odd segments of doughnut rings and tubes. This is caused when the wingtip vortices from the plane interact with the contrail, causing the vapor to spin into these weird little shapes. Only amounted to an inch or two, but the snowfall rates were simply incredible while it lasted. I was almost late to class because I wanted to take photos of it while it was good (I knew it would taper off during class). Discovered that the neighborhood behind the dorms is <i>far</i> less sketchy than anticipated. Wrote down the serial numbers of all my gear only to find a neighborhood full of Land Rovers and middle-aged white people lol. Might have to post a few more photos from my walk. The little brick cottage houses fit perfectly into the landscape, dug back into little knolls and dwarfed underneath century-old trees. My kind of place to live.
