This one IS my favorite out of all the remasters, for a lot of reasons. I liked the layout of the original, but the rendering was just too sloppy and busy for it really to be effective. Now that it's all clean and crisp, it's a lot more readable and I feel like the eye is naturally drawn down the page the way I intended it to be.

Kamina's pose in the original was always a disappointment to me; it was supposed to be so much more majestic and iconic! I mean, it's the GUNBUSTER POSE!! I think I sold it better in the revised version. You at least get the sense that his jacket is blowing dramatically in the wind instead of whatever the hell it's doing in the original.

Lastly, a small but crucial detail - that final text bubble of Kamina's got cut off in the initial print job thanks to it being so low on the page. Rank amateur mistake. I pay really close attention to print guides and bleed areas and all that shit now, let me tell you.


I WILL RETURN WITH MORE. Remember, books are showin' up on AUGUST 20th. THANKS DUDEZ

Also JESUS those action lines in the last panel are miserable in the original. There's like... no contrast between the truck and the rest of the panel. It looks like they're just disappearing into ACTION LINE ETHER. CONTRAST, kids. It is important. Especially when you're working with black and white.

I also removed a lot of unnecessary lines in the 4th panel. The focal point is the car, obviously, and having that extra negative space helps with that focus. Also, that last panel was a mess. I took great pleasure in cleaning that one up and adding some more detail.

Unlike the previous page, this one got a pretty major facelift. Simon's pose and placement in the original was incredibly boring and static, plus having his left foot stomping on L'arc's head there in the panel below him was a REALLY bad layout decision. Also, his legs weren't CONFUSINGLY SEXY enough in the original, which is a running gag I never get tired of. He is totally workin' it now


- The most egregious problem with the original was the fact that I CUT OFF THE TEXT IN THE FIRST PANEL. What the HELL, man. I still can't believe I let that slide hahaha

- Having the action lines extend to the edge of the page is much more visually striking than what I had going on in the original. I played around with full-page bleeds with a fair few of the new pages, to what i think are very nice results

- Changing Simon's facial expression in the third panel helps sell that line of his there. Plus, it was bad form to have both him and L'arc delivering lines without their mouths open. That's something that I try to avoid whenever I can (that said, I liked L'arc's expression enough to keep it the way it was. i am such a hypocrite ughghg)

- The linework in these early pages was pretty rough, but it was an especially huge mess in the fourth panel there; way too many conflicting textures and shadows. Plus the heavy, super-curvy lines on the Jiiha dude's face make it look like his head is melting from PURE HORROR

The wonderful thing about Manga Studio is that you can do all these teensy, thin lines and they reproduce in print just as well as the bold stuff. The original page here looked ESPECIALLY awful when I first got a proof copy; I can't wait to see how nice the new one will be on the printed page

If/when I do another book project, I'm going to put everything aside from the content itself in the hands of an actual graphic designer so nothing like this ever happens again.

ANYWAY, the upshot of all this is we finally have an ACTUAL, LEGIT SHIP DATE. Books are arriving on MONDAY, AUGUST 20th and shipping over the span of the 21st and 23rd. Thank GOD. I know it's been a long time coming, but rest assured that there actually is months worth of extra work in this book.

And now, to resume the long-overdue unloading of revised pages! DIRECTOR'S NOTES on this one, if you care:

- Aside from the obvious changes in line weight and smoothness, the most noticeable changes have to do with keeping the characters on-model with how they appear later in the story. The fat Jiiha dingbat and Flashdance-mode Asuka changed pretty drastically over very few pages, and that bugged the heck out of me even as I was drawing them. It felt nice to finally have them given a more uniform look

- Simon is rounder and more childish-looking in the new pages; I wanted to give a bit more contrast between here and his brief foray into BADASS SUPERCOP territory. He was just kinda weird-looking before, mostly 'cause (like with lots of the others) I just hadn't really figured out how to draw him yet

- SUPER-SECRET BEHIND THE SCENES! When I posted the original page, I had completely forgot to draw the money the fat guy's holding. I caught on, but I did a slapdash edit job and made him awkwardly holding the bills between his knuckles or something, which of course looks retarded. The new page features him holding the bills like, y'know, a human being might actually hold some money! HOORAY

- Simon is rounder and more childish-looking in the new pages; I wanted to give a bit more contrast between here and his brief foray into BADASS SUPERCOP territory. He was just kinda weird-looking before, mostly 'cause (like with lots of the others) I just hadn't really figured out how to draw him yet

- SUPER-SECRET BEHIND THE SCENES! When I posted the original page, I had completely forgot to draw the money the fat guy's holding. I caught on, but I did a slapdash edit job and made him awkwardly holding the bills between his knuckles or something, which of course looks retarded. The new page features him holding the bills like, y'know, a human being might actually hold some money! HOORAY

THIS, friends, is why I've been quiet for a while now. Many of you already know the story behind this, but for everyone else, here goes:

When I received a proof copy of DOUBLE K: VOLUME 1 in the mail a while back, i was horrified to see how poorly almost all of the early pages of the comic reproduced in print, especially compared to the crisp, beautiful later pages I'd done in Manga Studio. I refused to send out a subpar book, and, with the blessing of the wonderful backers over at Kickstarter, embarked on a painstaking restoration the entire first half of DOUBLE K.

What you're looking at now is a before-and-after of the first page of that process, and along with it, my declaration that IT IS DONE. 51 pages COMPLETELY redrawn, 37 more re-lettered, re-paneled, and thoroughly tweaked to make sure EVERYTHING is completely consistent. It was a ridiculous amount of work, but it has resulted in a truly spectacular book that looks absolutely wonderful and feels like a cohesive whole.

I appreciate your amazing patience during this long drought of content, and while I and my little team fulfill the hundreds of long-overdue orders, I have to ask for your patience for a little longer. HOWEVER, until that's done, I'm going to be phasing these new pages in to the archive once a day, along with these before-and-afters accompanied by "director's notes" about the changes I've made - after which I will reveal the pages that conclude this leg of the story, and we will move on to the abject insanity that will be DOUBLE K: VOLUME TWO.

Thank you all once again for your patience, and that goes DOUBLY for you, Kickstarter backers. You are all outrageously amazing for letting me go this crazy on this book.
