Mama needs some David Tennant wallpaper... and since I can't find any good quality WP around the net, I am gonna make some

David Tennant is my latest infactuation... he's from a variety of things and possibly better known at the moment for doing Secret Smile, Casanova and he is the new Doctor Who.

I know some people like to view my WIPs to get some tips and learn from me, so I am gonna kinda use this as a running tutorial as I go along... more to do with the technic though, not the program. So if you have any questions when I am doing this I will try my best to answer them for you - I will put all of this together in one tutorial at the end for people to put comments/fav for reference - with some good questions which have been asked.

I have done a realism portrait in Illustrator before, but that was finding my feet and I didn't go through my usual processes as I have done before. This is just how I do my portraits, there is no right or wrong way

I always start doing portraits etc... with base layers/paths. I use a medium colour (not the dark or lightest colours of an area, but inbetween) so when I come to shading, I just need to add 2 shades of dark colour and light on it and then lower the opacities accordingly.

When it comes to skin tones, I use the same colour base paths for all skin areas, so they don't look mismatched when the shading is done.

On the subject of skin bases... for a while now I have started to combine the ears and face into one path and then the neck has it's own path.

The hair base is not detailed as much as the final product will be... this is because I add separate stands to it when I come to do the hair.

The reason I do bases is when I do this sort of graphic, I concerntrate on one area at a time and I like to see how that area fits in with the rest of the portrait... do you get what I mean?

I am debating whether to show the lips, facial hair, eyes as separate stages or just have them in one swoop... what do you think?

I have put a lot of this on the image, so you have to full view it to see.

Although this is just one tiny aspect of the portrait - I have just went through the sort of process for shading I do so you can see how the shading would go throughout. Dark shading, highlighting and a darker shading.

Also, I am very stuck in my ways with stuff like this and may kinda have a OCD with opacities (yeah all layers/paths that aren't base layers are reduced opacity). I have talked about this with ~Ilaria84 - the opacities always have to be a multiple of 5 it's rather sad really... I can't bring myself to use any other numbers.

So not so much of a hint or tip there... but now you know Shaz has a vectoring OCD LOL - anyone else like this?

Like before, you have to full view for any tips etc...

What I tend to do is work on my least favourite elements first and work to my favourites. So I wont be doing skin now again until I have finished the clothing... ew.

An old friend once told me "Shit happens, this is shit and it's happened" as a response to why she was romantically involved with my closest friend. They had been keeping it a secret for a while and I got upset that I was the last to know... considering I lived with her and my closest friend I had known since I was about 12 years old.

That night sat in the front of a modded silver Vauxhall Astra...
in a supermarket carpark...
listening to Alice In Chains...
chain smoking cigarettes and joints.

I can't forget how shocked I felt... and how much I felt that I wish I had have been the one with my closest friend. Not because I wanted to be romantically involved with him, but more that I knew she was bad for him and I knew any girl would be the luckiest girl in the world to be with him.

Needless to say, the relationship lasted about a month... well with what I knew of. The friend I lived with became obsessive over my closest friend and I got accused of doing something which I never did. My friend was jealous. She didn't like the fact he loved me... _he_ loved me and not her.

The old friend and I parted ways when it all came out that she had created the jealous chaos and it took me a while to feel comfortable with my closest friend.

9 months infact.

During those 9 months I changed... personality wise, appearance wise and when we next exchanged words and he asked me why I changed so much... my response was "Shit happens. This is shit and it's happened."

True story.

Quicky wallpaper for *Outovsyt and thought this statement was a bit of a confidence booster.

The man has a habit of being a bit emo at times... but there is one tough problem ladies and gentlemen of deviantART, that he has to struggle with every single day.

*joke-art and I have been sitting on Skype tonight and decided to do a 3.5 hour challenge to do a portrait of the other person.

My first try at a human face without reference... I am proud of myself. I didn't think I would be able to do something like this. Granted, the face proportions out all over the place... but hey, good try for a first go right?

I worked from a sketch I did [link] - admittingly, I had many hurdles... the fact I really can't draw, that I only had blue paper and no scanner (had to use my camera to take a photo of the sketch!)... but I am a firm believer that a poor workman always blames his tools. (I used to use that justification when I used PSP to do vexels and everyone used PS ).

Anyway, this one I have learnt more about symbols in Illustrator (Ooooo glitter overdose!) and working more on multitonal hair. As well as working without a reference.

I am definately going to give this a go another time... I did have a lot of fun

I have this habit of reading and pronouncing peoples names wrong... I do it with words also... this doesn't help with my spelling at all.

So many elements coming into place and it's not even half way done yet. Scary.

I haven't been around for a while because I have just moved into my new flat (which I LOVE!) and I only just got my net connection sorted out today.

During this past 2 weeks, I have had to cope with the withdrawl of 3 things... a guy I really like, the net and well... most importantly, I have given up smoking.

After 14 years of smoking, 20+ a day... I have given up smoking... it is a big deal for me. I am currently on day 13 of being a non-smoker and it is very hard to do.

I took this about 5 days ago when I was arranging some furniture in the sitting room and I just wanted to play around with my camera. I am looking _very_ rough and withdrawl and craving just came to mind.

So here is my ode to Nicola O'Teen and the fabulous years I spent admiring you. You fucking bitch.

No I haven't gone mad.

I was having a chat with some people in #artnudes this morning and ^Katerina423 is taking her first step into vexelling... which btw is looking AWESOME so far! But of course she doesn't believe me.

Anyway, I wanted to show her my first ever vexel and how I got into vexelling/vectoring... I couldn't find this image at all... so I had a hunt on the net and found it.

This is Geneva Fox... an old friend from Hull who possibly has the best name ever!

I was going to post this in scraps but decided against it. At the time I was extremely proud of this and I guess I wanna show people that although the work I do now might be a different standard, you don't wake up and become an amazing vexel or vector artist over night.

It often takes a lot of time and practice. Not all of us can create mind blowing work.

If you keep on going and have the passion to push yourself, you will improve and you will be able to achieve more. This can be said about absolutely everything not just vexels/vectors.

I'd love to see some of your first creations, so if anyone has uploaded their first to dA - please show me!

This is our 3rd or 4th day of snow and we're due at least a couple more days.
