League of Legends Commission

DISCLAIMER: I have never played League of Legends so I apologize if my interpretations of the characters are kind of "off".

Anyways! This was a wallpaper commission for @Rilgon on Twitter of his favorite League of Legends characters in his preferred skins for them. The characters featured are Singed, Tristana, Poppy, Zilean and Kayle.

The original is 1920x1080 which makes it, bar none, the biggest art piece I've ever done. It took a while but I did have fun with these characters!

Okay so basically I'm getting ready to e-publish a book I wrote a couple of years back and I need feedback on if this looks like a decent cover or not. I know it's not super-omg-professional, and I know I'm not going to reach that level, but I want something that doesn't look TOO terrible, and that might entice someone to take a look at the book.

In my mind I have a picture of a gloriously epic group shot but realistically it's just not going to look good if I try to do that with my amateur art skills, so I'm just making it simple instead.

What I ultimately decided to go for here was an old-timey leather cover that is embossed or something. And yes I'm using an old drawing I made [link] .

Anyways, thoughts?

Soooo I drew myself as Zakharov, who is the best leader of the best faction (barring the expansion). Also I gave myself a mindworm pet with a bow tie, because that's just how I roll.

Clockwork Powered Hare

Typically when I draw my "clockwork hare" mascot, she is made out of brass-- this time I figured I'd give her a fur coat. Still has a clockwork-powered heart, though. :3 Also decided to experiment with giving her paw-like hands rather than human-like hands, mostly just to see how it turned out.

As usual I'm too lazy to make a background.

And yeah she looks like a bobblehead. :<

I didn't feel like actually drawing the automaton, hence why the levers sort of... dissolve into nothingness. So sorreh.

FUN FACT: This was originally going to be a picture of an airship pirate but I changed my mind about halfway through.

Oh one more thing-- the title of the picture is a line from an Abney Park song, called "Building Steam". I figured it was fitting...

Here we have Profferlink and Windshifter looking decidedly... not like their normal selves.

Human, and not furry (or scaly or whatnot).

Just for fun.

I dressed Windshifter in green because it seemed fitting, him originally being a green dragon and all. But he just ended up looking like a leprechaun. Derp.

I also went against my own STRONG POCKETWATCH ETHICS and put his watch in his right hand pocket, instead of his left. Mostly because I wanted it to be in the picture somehow. I figure I can be forgiven for it because Windshifter is such a spacehead that I'm sure he doesn't exactly pay attention to these types of things.

I have no clue what they're looking at. Probably a floakling doing something bizarre. I have no idea what a human floakling would look like. Maybe a street urchin kid? I dunno. This is why they are usually furries...

So I don't know if anyone has noticed yet but there are about a thousand and one references to hacking/open source/free software/etc. in my book. I mean, Sparktender even quotes the Hacker Manifesto.

Aaaaanyways I was feeling silly so this picture is sort of a tribute to the book's cyberpunk-esque influences. "Windshifter" set about 120 years after the events in the book. I figure the character on the left is one of Sparktender's great-great-etc-grandkids (hence the big ol' watch) and the guy on the right is a Windshifter descendant. He's wearing a Tux shirt (lawls)... also I think he sort of came out looking like Fry from Futurama...

But yeah they're both supposed to be giant nerds so I guess it works out...

Basically this is the type of thing I draw when I listen to The Clockwork Quartet ( [link] ) all day.

The doctor's wife is dying from an unknown disease. After trying everything, he attempts to salvage what's left of her by fusing her with a machine.

So in the picture he's sort of... a few moments away from taking the final steps and finalizing everything.

This was a commission of a roleplaying character of a good friend. The character is an X-men-esque feline featured mutant who is also a private eye.

Tried a new inking technique for this one; instead of actually digitally inking it like I usually do and ending up with a dark, albeit somewhat pixelly line, I took the pencilwork from the original sketch and put it on a top "multiply" layer, while doing the coloring and everything underneath. I really like how it turned out and I think I'll probably do a lot of my art like this from now on. ^_^

First of all crediting [link] for the lurvely background.

Hokays, so I tried a couple new techniques on this one. First of all I attempted "underpainting", aka, I made a layer where I painted the character in with colors from the background, and then painted the actual character colors in over the top of that at about 90% opacity. I was going for some overall color uniformity. I dunno if it made a difference or not. (Probably wasn't the best thing ever to try it out on.)

I also tried to make a fur texture... or hair, I suppose, since he's covered more in short, fine hair than thick fur. I like how the ears came out, the rest... eh, better than nothing...

This scene never actually happened in the book per se, but I always pictured it as being part of a montage sequence that sort of explains a lot of backstory.

Sooo earlier today I was leveling my warlock (in World of Warcraft,) desperately trying to find a group in LFG and not having any luck cause apparently I'm the only person in the world who isn't on her main and in the new raid.

But then one of my sisters... ... said she would run me through Scarlet Monastery with her moonkin. So we did that!

Every so often we would stop to drink in the cathedral courtyard and I thought there was something MEGA CUTE about a moonkin and a gnome having adventures. So, I made this picture.

They're drinking from orange juice boxes for maximum cuteness.

Epic Sparktender Maneuver

Recently I added a prologue to my novel. In said prologue, Young Sparktender does something Very Epic.

This is that epic-ness.

So yeah, when you take the shading and coloring into consideration, this is prrrroooobably the best thing I've drawn ever. And I'm still learning... whee!

Getting the expression, hands, and lighting just right was hard to pull off but I think it worked out. All told I probably spend a good four or five hours working on this piece from start to finish.

I stuck a gradient in the background to sort of give the illusion of light coming from above (I envision it to be a sort of lightning-y sky. He's on an airship, so.)

ChemLab Cast

So when I was younger I came up with this idea of a story about anthropomorphic chemical elements who worked in a giant Chemistry Lab in the sky maintaining the laws of science and nature. I drew these characters a lot and eventually wrote out not one, not two, but THREE different screenplays playing off of this idea.

The characters are all extra-cartoony (Mickey Mouse shoes, kid gloves, etc.) because come on, they're anthropomorphic atoms... can't do much with 'em.

The buttons on their heads are how they trigger their electrons to show-- that way they aren't reacting with every little molecule in the air if they don't want to be.

From left to right: Fluorine, Hydrogen, Sodium, Helium, Chlorine, Potassium, and Cadmium. Looming above them is the villain, Mercury. He's... well if I were going to really finish this piece he'd be blending into the background as a sort of design-y thing. /nod

I always envisioned the story as a Pixar-esque computer-animated movie... maybe someday.

So because of an unexpected hard drive death I had to completely reformat my computer over the weekend. I wanted to test if my scanner worked so I doodled a little something that turned into this picture!

The character is a "liger", because it is sort of a random present for ! She is wearing steampunk goggles and is playing with little mechanical bugs of some sort, it looks like.

Umm, yeah, that's about it. Still trying to figure out this whole shading and lighting thingy.

Yes, degeneration. Because frankly I haven't improved since 2003. Actually I've pretty much flatlined and stayed about the same since then. (For some really REALLY visible improvement you'd have to stretch the meme back to 1998/1999. That's what happens when you're old like me. Whippersnappers! *waves cane*)

Anyways, I'm pretty sure 2003 was my best year for art until... last week. Totally not exaggerating on that. I drew a lot of stuff I really like last week. Too bad the meme didn't stretch into the first week of 2010. (I'm dead serious.)

Other than the smudginess and the fact that Demented-Chinchilla-Thing appears to be floating in mid-air, this is probably one of the better things I've drawn... pretty much ever. Especially Demented-Chinchilla-Thing. I like his goggles.

These are characters from my book "Windshifter", named Snaps and Lexie. They are the engineers of the airship Tempus Fugit. ^^

Ideally I'd actually ink and color this and set it in a boiler room or something, but we all know I'd just ruin it if I tried to do that. Maybe someday.

The Gentleman Water Elemental

Somebody I follow on Twitter said that Water Elementals (in World of Warcraft) were adorable and he wanted to see one in a top hat.

So I drew it.

I originally was just going to toss this in scraps because it took about 5 minutes to make but it seemed to go over well on Twitter so I figured, why the heck not, here ya go dA!

I would like to point out that the picture is probably slightly incorrect because a pocketwatch should be worn in the left pocket. That way, you can do things with your right hand while still being able to check the time. I know this because I am a Gigantic Geek. Also I researched it for my NaNoWriMo.

(or hey, maybe the water elemental is left handed, who knows...)

Also I started too close to the top of the page so the hat does get cut off because I ran out of room to draw. /fail

Anyways, water elemental design is property of Blizzard Entertainment, I just went and messed it up

Two Heads Are Better Than One

An ooold picture of my two youngest sisters which I took in MTA 103, aka "Intro to Photography" when I was in school. Gonna estimate the date to be late 2002/early 2003.

Because it was so long ago I don't remember any details regarding specs on the picture. I can tell you that it was taken with a Canon EOS Rebel and that the film and photograph were processed and printed 100% in a darkroom.

I miss that darkroom...

Cover art for my NaNoWriMo, "Windshifter".

I don't ink/color outside of the computer very often. Mostly because I have a tendency to mess up, and there is no "undo". But I was going for a fairy-tale-ish, storybook feel here, so I enlisted the help of one of my oooold standbys: watercolor pencils.

In the process of doing so, I forgot that the paper I was painting on was not meant for painting and it got all wrinkly. So it looks horrible. I'm sorry. D=

Alternate Title for the piece: "Pike Can't Draw Airships".

And for the record the watch isn't actually jumbo-sized and there's not an airship painted on it. It's supposed to be all abstract and design-y and stuff. *nods* *fails*

So I decided to stop being a lazy noob and actually start shadowing and adding lighting effects to my cartoon characters. This is my very first attempt at it (no, seriously, it is) and I like how it turned out. The jacket coulda been done better, but hey... it could have been worse! I then stuck the character on a gradient because it helped him "pop out" more and added a faux-light source to the picture.

In addition to lighting I am trying out a new style of eye (rather than just the big round circle) which I like thus far.

ANYWAYS, this is a character concept from my NaNoWriMo novel. His name is Profferlink Naronax, he is an alchemist and his design is very loosely based on that of my parents' Whippet dog.

I am assuming he is indoors at the moment because it would be rather unbecoming of him to be outside without his hat!

Mostly just an experiment in lighting. Original tree picture was a very BRIGHT color, so darkened it up and I kinda like how this turned out. Yeah, it's still noob-ish, but baby steps right?

Way back in 1842, Charles Babbage took a pile of gears and turned it into a prototype of the modern computer. Meanwhile Ada Lovelace, a countess in a puffy dress who happened to be ridiculously awesome with mathematics in her spare time, showed up and wrote a bunch of documentation and programs for this "difference engine".

This project never really got off the ground since they were freakin' 100 years ahead of their time, but it was still an Epic Victory, so clearly the only thing for me to do was immortalize them by turning them into cats and giving them ray guns.

I mean come on, it only makes sense.

Yeeeah, something I sketched up in about five minutes. Wash from "Firefly" does his famous dinosaur scene... except... backwards.

I may end up coloring this and making it look like a more "finished" product later on if I feel like it.

Concept sketch of a character from my NaNoWriMo book. His name is Cydar Hailshaker, he's an airship pilot and basically he's a mashup of Han Solo, Captain Mal, and Cid Highwind.

(yes the name similarity to the latter is intentional. I'm a dork.)
