I was rummaging through my old backup files looking for a few studies I did for my website re-design, when I found this one. I have completed this image alongside my work with OrangUtan Comics Studio in October and completely forgot about it.

Ok, have to explain this; with each new character I come across (like Alicia's Guyver47), the first thing i do is to familiarize myself by doing character sheet designs. I wanted to draw Seven in an action pose (she knows kung-fu), but couldn't get the pose I want. This finished product was an accident while doodling her face. i loved the look in her face so much that the body just came into being.

Also, I wanted to do a comicbook cover concept, so the character and the pose seemed appropriate for it.

This is for Becky, which I hope she likes. Sorry took me awhile.

An excerpt from the fiction ' The Shadows Inside' by Daniel Summers describing the character Merec...

Merec was a sight few could stand without feeling a scream rise in their throat. His white, almost transparent skin gave the impression of a stark ghostly apparition, a creature whose natural home was some kind of dark netherworld that never felt the light of the sun. Terecmen almost was. The mountains now were far away.

His hair, the same color as his skin, was like fine spidersilk and it framed his face like the shimmering mists resting on the darkened hills. His face seemed like a lifeless image carved from stone with sharp, chiselled features that surrounded his piercing eyes. These were easily his most dominant feature. His eyes were such a light grey they were almost white. Small lines of a very light blue streaked across them like lightning. The center of his eyes, instead of a dark hole for receiving light, were dark blue triangular slits. They glowed faintly. The thought that he must be a creature caught inside planes where he did not belong, ...something between a corpse and a ghost, came to most who didn't know better. In fact, he was an elf and almost everyone present in the small inn would mark and remember it. They were rarer than ghosts and much more dangerously substantial, from his lean and powerful seven foot frame to his jagged canine teeth.

If his appearance hadn’t naturally inspired fear most would have thought of him as a creature of unnatural perfection. Nothing about him was not purely symmetrical. He was like a fine ice sculpture carved from the glaciers of his northern mountain home. But Merec had been cut too exactly to be the work of any mortal hands. No craftsman could learn their art so completely in a multitude of normal lifespans. Merec’s perfectly cold features melted slowly into a smile.

[EDIT 02.24.05] Trivia: I color using very bright hues, so to achieve this dark look, I "fooled" my eyes by setting my monitor's brightness to its maximum setting (which is usually set to about under 50%), so when I started coloring, I could see the bright colors I'm used to, and yet in the back of my head, I know it'll be darker than what my eyes are seeing. ]]> Merec is © 2004 - 2005 Daniel Summers

The owner showed me previous drawings of this character done by another artist. The drawings were probably done in the mid-90s, and the artist somewhat traced his works using Jim Lee and Marc Silvestri's originals from WildC.A.T.S. and Cyberforce. Seeing as the character's design was probably inspired by these works and those probably done also by Brett Booth (Backlash), I took the opportunity to pay homage to Jim Lee by doing the character ala the Batman HUSH and Superman FOR TOMORROW covers that he did.

Of course, I didn't trace mine from those. Just took inspiration. The buildings and the gargoyle, though, were based on different photos of New York and Amsterdam.

Loved doing this one in particular.

I opted to do a much more painted feel rather than my usual comic book-style coloring, to somehow give homage to the original creator which is a very good digital painter, as well as to the commissioner =Vrykon, and his 'cursed' coloring style (prominent with the background) which he does with only a mouse.

I tweaked the design of the character, seeing that she's basically a naked woman, by adding much larger scales to her forearms and having her hair more like feathers (thanks to =Vrykon for the idea).
