Anyone who knows me, know my feeling towards the final visuals in TANGLED. Especially the final look of the characters. I was never a big fan of the CGI Disney characters, they always lack something I can only find in 2D hand drawn characters, especially in the design. Most of CGI characters are so generic, big round eyes, and always lean towards the comic style. Plus, when came to the Disney Heroes collection, it felt like not much of challenge to take a 3D character, and turn it into a more realistic version, which is what I love the most about drawing the 2D characters in this collection.

The decision to finally take the step and add Flynn to the collection came after I've received "The Art Of Tangled" book as a birthday gift from one of my best of of friends (M, you're the best!), in which I saw again all the amazing character designs of Flynn done by Glen Keane and Jin Kim and I remembered why I loved this character a few years back before they final design in the movie. This is when I inspired to take the original 2D characters design, which is a bit more angular, an way more Glen Keane, and have that to be a part of the Disney Heroes Collection.

Not only that, I had also started to think of how I would use all of what CGI animation has to offer in order to bring that character from the 2D world to the 3D one, if I was the one to design the final movie version. This is when I another one of my best friends, a very special person and a visionary all on his own, suggested the idea of giving Flynn some body hair, and it hit me that this what Disney should have done, if they're already using CGI, why not do something extra, that can't be done in 2D that easy, using the GCI medium to it's advantage instead of trying to imitate the hand drawn style?!

After endless tries and different takes on the famous smoulder, figuring out the right outfit that would fit with the time in which TANGED takes place, the final addition to this drawing was the background and of course the lanterns. To me, the lanterns sequence was the best thing about Tangled. It was magic! All of a sudden, I didn't care about the facts that I didn't like the character design, the backgrounds, nothing was wrong, as everything was right - it was a pure Disney magic moment and there was no doubt in my mind that I had to have it in one of my Tangled fan arts drawings, and which better then this one? (yes, these lanterns took days to create!)

I hope you all love this one, as I truly put my heart into it, and wanted to give it something extra then the rest of the collection, and in one way or another, this will be the new direction for the Disney Heros Collection, and there are many more of them already in the making.

I am currently busy with many, many amazing projects at the moment, and if you want to see previews of all of them then visit my partner in crime page ---> [link] - I would LOVE to hear your thoughts and comments on any one of them.

Once I'll get some free time from work at the studio and get a little better with my health, it is back to the Heroes.

-------------------------------------
David Kawena, 2011
Photoshop CS2

Ever since the first commercial picture of him was released I fell in love with his design - who can resist that smile right?! But there wasn't much to go with his portrait as there was only one picture out there. So I only worked on the face based on that image, and right when the trailer was out I knew I want to incorporate that breathtaking transformation of Naveen into his portrait. At first it was his transformation into a frog that inspired me, but then seeing more and more that bits of animation of him and Tiana turning into humans at the swamp with all that magical water around I knew that this is it! That's the visual I was looking for!

It is not an easy task to do a realistic portrait of an animated character. Not at all! And it's even more complicated to achieve when you didn't even saw the film itself. "What do I really know about Naveen as character that I can put into this drawing?!"

These were my initial thoughts going into creating this piece. Well, I knew this was a lady's man!
A HQ version is now on my facebook page ---> [link]
You are all welcome to follow me there

---------------------------------------------------------------
Straight from the bayou swamp waters of New Orleans, in honour of the spacial engagement limited release of Disney's newest masterpiece, "The Princess and the Frog" I am proud to present to you all the latest addition to the Disney Heroes Collection - Prince Naveen!

Yes people, the time has come!
The first 2D hand drawn animated Disney film in 5 years was released today in New York and Los Angeles.

I've been working on this portrait of Prince Naveen for months now.

Full of himself and charming good looks I guess, but also a fun, life loving guy indeed. That charming smile of him I was talking about before?! I knew it must be there

He really is the Prince of the Swamp, and I also gave him a small necklace with that element from the film's logo, that I really really love as it's a combination or a royalty crown and a frog feet. The first one featured them along a giant statue of Aslan, with Caspian sitting on top of it, and Peter sitting on the floor. That drawing was 90% done, and every time I looked at it, something felt wrong and did not set well into the frame... So I decided to drop it and move on to other heroes on the list.

A month ago I decided I want to re-try doing something with Peter and Caspian. The one thing I set my mind on to, was heaving them together in the same shot!

After a short brain storm, the idea of a friendly arm wrestling between the two popped to my mind and I knew this was it! It was so much fun heaving them interact with one another, as oppose to the first version. The one thing I took from the original version were all the Narnian motives of the armour and crowns and then I added more of them to Caspian and Peter's jokestraps and of course the Aslan inspired table!

While heaving some difficulties fitting the standard "Disney Heroes" background to work with the scene, I played with it a little and decided to add the strong ray of light in - and I am so happy I did! I hope I achieved what I was looking for, in getting a mix of the animated and the real-life versions of Prince Edward.

In a way, I think that after seeing Enchanted for the first time, the initial thought of "How would other Disney guys would look like if the were real?" came to my mind. Maybe that was the beginning for this whole collection of mine.... So, Edward had already had his place in the collection from the start!

David...

--------------------------
Photoshop CS
David Kawena, 2009

            </media:community>
Finally - after such so long, it is time for another Disney Hero post!

This time around I'm continuing the "facial shots" side of the collection, started with Hercules [link] now it's Tarzan's turn to 'make a face'!

I always had the most great admiration for Disney's / Glen Keane's vision of Tarzan! The short movie was released on the DVD title "Disney's American Legends" on February 2002. It was a new short among other classic Disney shorts telling the story of some of America's true pioneer heroes. The DVD was presented in 1.33:1 or full-screen format that was so unbelievably degrading for this short that was created in widescreen (1.85:1). Other thing that I really loved in the short was Henry's over sized body design, that I tried as hard as I could to stay true too, while still keeping it realistic. I gotta say it was so much fun drawing him - this was my first time drawing John Henry EVER - he has great facial features, and using these dark chocolate colours in the Heroes series was such a welcome change and I loved every part of it...

I sure hope you'll gonna love this change too
Have A Wonderful Month Everyone
- David

-------------------------------
Photoshop CS2
"David Kawena" 2008

Other thing that I really loved in the short was Henry's over sized body design, that I tried as hard as I could to stay true too, while still keeping it realistic. I gotta say it was so much fun drawing him - this was my first time drawing John Henry EVER - he has great facial features, and using these dark chocolate colours in the Heroes series was such a welcome change and I loved every part of it...

I sure hope you'll gonna love this change too
Have A Wonderful Month Everyone
- David

-------------------------------
Photoshop CS2
"David Kawena" 2008

Sitka stands for loving brother to his younger brothers He is very spiritual, always there to give you a good advice and he's very true and respective to his heritage - which I really love!

Not giving any spoilers away for people who hadn't seen the movie yet, I'll say this - Sitka's love for his family made him in my eyes the most influential individual in the movie. He is responsible for Kenai's transformation - not only his physical one, but his true spiritual transformation. If it was real life story, it will take a lot for somebody, an older brother, to really throw your younger brother into a world of danger and hurt, sitting back, doing almost nothing to help him, just because you know that by learning a certain lesson he will gain the most important thing in the world - his true self! That to me is true love! I can't tell you I'm like that, but I am working on it...

In one of the most brilliant scenes in movie Sitka got his own song "Transformation" in which he explains to his youngest brother Kenai about the lesson he must learns and the man he needs to become. Phil Collins wrote what I think is one of the most beautiful songs to ever be a part of a Disney film! It's my 3 most favourite Disney song after "Colour of the Wind" and "Just Around the Riverbend" ("Pocahontas"). The fact that the song is being sung in the Inuit language simply brought tears to my eyes when I first heard it.

With the love I share for Sitka you can understand why this drawing was a challenger, and you can see why I chose to make it extra special and different from the rest of the "Disney Heroes". Much like in the movie I wanted to keep Sitka's strong body but natural body-language, I wanted to present him as one with his tradition, so I added the chair, horns spear and furs. It took 6 days to accomplish - including one major Photoshop crash that made me start some of it all over again - but it's all good, as it came better the 2nd time around! But it had a brilliant score - composed by James Newton Howard (who is probably the BEST most ignored composer in Hollywood! He deserved at least an academy award nomination for almost everything he's done so far!) it also had one of the most unique styles of animation and design! As such, it introduced us to a very non-typical Disney characters too - Milo was the leader of the category!

Milo is not all that 'tall-dark-handsome' type of hero. He's older then most Disney Heroes, geeky, skinny, N.E.R.D! I could relate to his passion for preserving the ''Atlantian cloture'' as a theme in the movie and as a message the creative team sent out to the views through it! It seemed to me that towards the end of the film, while we see that side of Milo, he also becomes more attractive, more well rounded in his design too, and his animation all of sudden seem to reach it's highest point.

Milo's design gave me an extra challenge as I don't really find the skinny look to be attractive... so I posed him a little bit to the side to take advantage of the full width of the belly plus heaving some more view on the side of his body, this way he's not appearing as skinny as he is.

- side note -
I wish all who celebrates right now, an enchanted Christmas, happy holydays and a happy, wonderful and fulfilling new year!!!
I don't celebrate Christmas myself, but I love this holiday spirit and mood!

---------------------------
Photoshop CS2
"David Kawena" 2007

But it had a brilliant score - composed by James Newton Howard (who is probably the BEST most ignored composer in Hollywood! As such, it introduced us to a very non-typical Disney characters too - Milo was the leader of the category!

Milo is not all that 'tall-dark-handsome' type of hero.
