So this is the one that started it all. I was working on Punisher Max (did the first 12) and the editor Axel Alonso called and told me he wanted me to work with John and Klaus.

I almost turned it down because man WAS I scared of coloring John, I just felt it was too easy to go wrong on him and mess up his art. I was going back and forth on it and then came across a painting of Hellboy that Mike Mignola did and I instantly felt that that was more of the way to go with John. Focus on the big shapes and then add the painting on top of it.

I ended up doing the cover then the first 6 pages and being rather aggressive with the art, adding in blacks going over the lines. I was all over the map doing it the way I wanted to and had not really seen on John up to that point.

I was ready for them to hate it but if I was going to work with John and Klaus I could not do it without trying to give it my all. If they did not like those pages then I would just bow out and let them find someone more suited to their taste. No fuss no foul. Luckily John and Klaus were happy with it. I did have some nervous moments as I was waiting for their responses to see if they liked it or not. ]]> Pencils John Romita Jr

The cover that started our current (my first) on Spiderman. It was suppose to be 3 times a month, ended up being 5 weeks in a row then 3 weeks off until the next issue. I think it kicked all of our butts. ]]>

So I ended up doing two version of this cover. The first is on the right. We had a slight miscommunication on this one. I understood that they wanted something similar to the Cable cover and was a tad challenged by how to do that with the pencils since they did not seem to lend themselves to that approach but check in to make sure that was what they wanted and went to work on it. I really wanted to make sure Klaus and everyone was happy. So I turn it in and Klaus is happy with it but then the Editors came back and that they thought it was beautiful but that it did not have the mood they were looking for and were expecting something slightly different. More traditional in the digital paint. We ended up finding were we went off the rails in our conversations with regards to the cover. They were great with deciding to use the first one as a pinup inside and pay me for the second version. So I turned around and started over and did the one on the left which was just what they were after. These things sometime happen but in the end the Editors were great about it. ]]>

Johns strength to me are all about his shapes and form. I wanted to play those aspects up more. I was thinking of artist that I like a lot that play with shape and form and design, like Dave Johnson, Skottie Young and Cheeks . I wanted to see how that would work on such a great classic artist like John and if I could pull it off. ]]>

This was the page when I saw it in BW that made me decide to do the series in Watercolor. Risso is such a challenging person to color because he work is so great in Black and White. It is to easy for the color to take away from it. I wish Marvel would give me more books to do like this. I painted half of this book at the park. So nice to get away from the computer ]]>
