Basket of owls - Update

Posting an update on the owls and introducing a new size (XXS) and new eye colors!
Originally I was planning on having them all done by now, but due to my aunt's passing, I had to put them on hold for a couple of weeks and leave for Sweden, as I wanted to attend to her funeral. Since I've gotten back I've managed to finish four owls (one commissioned and sent on the journey to its new home). I still have five more owls or so to go. Making the fluff for the markings and the markings themselves takes forever...
Once finished, all of the owls (except the big one and the tiny prototype) will be looking for new homes to move to!

PMD-E Request - Ikku the Banette

After my latest picture, Hurokita asked me if I would be willing to draw her Banette Ikku. Normaly I'm a bit cautious about requests. "Have to do's" tend to kill my motivation, but since my own team will have a Banette at some point, I figured this would be a good opportunity to get some free practice. So, here you go, Hurokita. I hope you like the way Ikku turned out. I added an extra transparent row, since I think that ghosts should be semi-transparent. xD

PMD-E - Dashing through the grass

Hmm, I haven't done any fanart in a long time and I wasn't really planning on doing so again, now that I have my very own little Siesta Universe with a lot of original designs for me to explore. However, the time I spend on drawing has gone from literary doodling every free minute all year around to several months passing without ever touching a pen (other than to quickly scribble down notes on what groceries I need to buy). My notes used to be full of random doodles. Now they are left empty and I only draw when I set my mind upon doing so. That doesn't happen very often, since I don't feel that I miss drawing, thus, I "forget" to draw at all. On the rare occasion that I do sit down to draw, I enjoy it a lot though and wonder why on earth I'm not drawing more often.

I've been admiring the cheerful Pokémon-art of ~0okami-Rei for some time. At times when I feel gloomy I like to just click around in her gallery. Her style combined with the bright, shiny colors usually manage to cheer me up. Watching her drawings has also sparked my interest for Pokémon that lay dormant for years and made me curious about what on earth the often referred to PMD-Explorers could be. It turns out it's a group here on DA that has adopted the concept from the Pokémon Mystery Dungeon games and has adapted it to the possibilities offered in an art-community as well as RPG.

I've decided to give it a try and after poring over the list of Pokémon (currently over 600 and more coming ) I eventually settled for a team starting out with a Patrat [link] and Shuppet [link]. I still need to come up with a team name, as well as names for the two characters. This drawing started out as an attempt to explore Patrat's design and adapting it to my own style. The painting shows both of my team members, before one of them joins the afterlife and becomes a Shuppet.

I'm hoping that participating in the group's activities might bring me back into the habit of drawing, as well as teach me a thing or two about story telling. So, more Pokémon related art to come and hopefully more original art.

It's relaxing to do some painting in between of crafting, even if it's fanart. I'm hoping to make drawing a habit again, rather than something that only happens on rare occations and so far I feel optimistic. :3
Still tweaking on the history section of the character form for my PMD-E team. Seems I can't settle for quick sketches or speed paintings. xD;

Working on and off on this one. Finally got the hooves done (still need painting) and got most of the filling in place. The chest area is problematic, so I'll see what can be done there to improve the shape. The snout is terribly narrow to, but I'm hoping to counteract it by tying in the cheeks a bit.

I ordered a whole bunch of brown safety eyes of various sizes some time ago. To my dismay they turned out to be a completely different brand of eyes than the type that was shown on the homepage and what was worse: they were red and not brown! Until now I've found no use for them, since they would just make any plush I tried them on look evil. XD
To my big surprice, on this little owl the color actually works without turning it into a bloodthirsty ball of fluff.

Easter greetings from the owl nest!

I started on these owls a couple of months ago after I had raided my local fabric store and discovered two new colors in their modest selection of faux fur (which prior to this addition consisted of three colors...). Once home I got started on twelve owls but got interupted soon after so they've been lying around unfinished ever since.

Realizing that my mother in law's birthday was just two days away and I was still missing a birthday gift for her, I decided to finish up the four owls that were closest to completion and let her pick one. She picked the white owl with a green belly. Oh, and these guys introduce a new size as they are smaller than the original three owls I made close to a year ago. :3

I'm hoping to finish the rest soon, as well as a certain horse plush I've been devoting much of my time to over the recent weeks. In the mean time I wish you a happy Easter!

Chibi pangolins

Hidden Talent - Mobile Horses

A couple of months ago a friend tagged me with one of those random meme surveys. Usually I just ignore chain mail, but since it came from a nice person and I wasn't really doing anything right then and there, I decided to make an exception and give it a go.

This was one of the questions asked and it is the reason that this deviation came into being.

Do you have a talent that isn't shown on DA?
- Hm, I used to make fully mobile paper horses years ago while still in school. I never showed any of those on DA and it's been ages since I made one.

After answering this question I promised myself to go on a very special treasure hunt next time I would be visiting my parents. ;3

As time allows I'll be digging deeper into my old treasure chest and bring more horses to you and the full story behind their development.

Pangolin Fridge Magnet - Sleep tight little one

It's time for another pangolin fridge magnet and this time it's actually 2 pangolins in 1!

I'm really fond of this tiny duo turned out and I love the twig. I'll definatly make more magnets that include twigs! %D

The mother is covered by almost 200 scales and her baby by around 70 tiny scales of various sizes. Each scale has been cut out by hand, cleaned of fuzzy edges before being glued in place. The sizes range between 2-10 mm.

The bodies are split into several sections. This allows me to fit the scales seamlessly and creates a 3D-effect. The mother consists of six separate sections (body, legs, neck and the tongue) and the little one of three (body and legs). Baby and the tongue can be removed.

Materials: Faux suede scraps, felt, magnet, glue, plastic coated wire, acrylics, twig and patience.

Time: 3 days

Pangolin fridge magnet

Update: Sold for $41 which were donated to Equip Rangers to Protect Endangered Wildlife in order to help save pangolins and other animals in Cambodia.

I've been pondering about various ways to further promote the real pangolin's dire situation and ways to raise some funds, that could be donated for their cause.

One of the ideas I came up with was this little two-dimensional fellow here. He can be used as a fridge manget!

This tiny guy is covered by almost 100 scales of various sizes (ranging from 3-6 mm), each cut out by hand and glued in place.

To create the illussion of depht, I've split the body into three parts (head, body and tail) and covered them with scales, before glueing them together. The tip of the tail isn't fixed and can either be wrapped around the body or be left visible in front of it.

Materials used: Faux suede, felt and textile glue
Time: Two days

I felt like trying something else than bellystripes this time and decided on dots instead. It was a lot of fiddling, getting the tufts in place, but I like the outcome as it looks a bit more realistic. It opens up for some interesting marking possibilities. :3

As of the choice of colors... I didn't want to use the exact same colors as the previous owls. But that left me with very few choices, since faux fur isn't very common in the local stores I visit. Black seems like a weird color for an owl... So I decided to use an even weirder one and finally found a use for the faux fur I was ranting about here! [link] It's my highest quality fabric, and by far, most expensive one. %D

Request - Big Owl Plush

The past couple of weeks I've had problems getting some proper sleep at night and it's often resulted in many hours of idle waiting for sleep to come and then waking up several times in the following hours. It's left me more tired and busted in the morning, than before I went to bed. xD;

The prolonged lack of sleep has dulled my sences and I've been making a lot of silly mistakes I would usually manage to avoid. Seriously, one minute I tell myself to pay attention to some detail of importance and how it is to be done and the next minute I discover that I've done the exact thing I wasn't supposed to be doing. >_<

So, after ruining some perfectly fine fabric that I need for a bunch of cussion sheets I've been commissioned , I decided that I can't risk ruining a lot of work, due to lack of sleep and attention. I needed something idiot proof to work with and I remembered this owl here that I was meaning to make some time later this year when things had calmed down a bit.
I still managed to mix up a few things while working with the stripes (like placing the fur in the wrong direction) but all in all it didn't give me a lot of trouble and it feels nice to have it finished. One thing less on my 2do-list. :3

I feel very happy with the way the colors turned out. I wasn't able to find any light colored brown faux fur fabric in the stores where I do my shopping, so in I ended up buying a large teddy bear in a mall and stripped it of it's fur. (felt like such a killer) The largest piece was just large enough for the belly patch.
The quality of the teddy bear fabric was pretty poor I must say. Compared to the other fabric, the fur is less dense and it's not cut evenly. The bottom layer was also made of a very coarse, thin fabric. o.O Must have been a very cheap material no doubt.

Request - Owl plush WIP

Another pattern I researched during the holidays. This tiny owl is the prototype for a much larger version that I'll be making at some later point. For now I've used felt but the finished version will have faux fur instead and will be very fuzzy and cuddly. :3
It's based on the large owl plush that can be seen in the movie "Lost in translation" and it will be roughly the same size but the colors will be very different due to lack of nice colors in the local stores. Luckily for me the one who requested this plush doesn't mind. xD

I'm still alive and I'm bringing you more scales!

Chibi Willy has gotten a brother.
This little guy (to the left) has been a real troublemaker right from the beginning and to very end, thus I've dubbed him Willy's evil twin! (:<

Things that went wrong:
Forgot to sew the folds on his belly before attaching the sides.
Attached his arms waaaaaaay too late.
Covered his tail with scales, only to discover that I had done it wrong and had to tear them loose and start over again (with new scales). The tail went from having less scales than his older brother to more.
Had to remove scales and rearrange them every so often.
Got a spot of glue near the arm. Managed to cover it with scales. %D

I could make the list longer, but I think you get the picture. It's taken me a lot longer finish this chibi pangolin than the first and I'm happy that it turned out well after all. ^^

Here's another update on how the chibi pangolin is coming along. Glueing on the scale is so speedy compared to sewing them on. Nonetheless I'm having the usual problem with getting the alignment right.

Restocked on eyes so now I have smaller ones too that I can try out at some point, since I think the current ones might be a tad too big.

After I had finished the first chibi pangolin and penguin a while ago, I brought them along while visiting my boyfriend's family. They grew very fond of these guys so I was commissioned one of each. :3

This little chubby fellow was commissioned by my boyfriend's brother and I finished him during the early night hours of april the 2nd. One hour later my boyfriend became an uncle and his brother a proud father. x3

The following day we visited the happy family at the hospital and I was able to deliver the plush, aswell as see their newborn bundle of joy!

The unknown peril of the pangolins

Over the past weeks Willy the pangolin-plush has gotten a lot of attention and was even rewarded a DD!
Whilst both Willy and I are very happy with the success, it's become obvious to us that very few people know of the existence of an animal called pangolin. Out of those, an even smaller fraction know that these amazing animals are rapidly facing extinction due to poachery and a never ending appetite for their meat and body parts on the chinese and vietnam black market.

Over the past hours we've gathered information and photos from the internet and it's been a stomach twisting experience. We hereby want to turn the spotlight on the pangolin's plight and bring it to public attention so please, spare some minutes of your time and keep on reading.

8 things everyone needs know about the pangolin's peril and the burgeoning black market:

* The demand for pangolins and their body parts stems almost exclusively from East and Southeast Asia, and especially from China and Vietnam.

* Pangolin meat is consumed as a delicacy, while their scales, blood, and fetuses are used to make traditional medicines. Subscribers of this ideology superstitiously use these substances to treat a number of health issues; for example, to reduce swelling, improve liver function, boost weight loss, stimulate blood circulation, increase fertility, and to enhance lactation in breast-feeding women. Stuffed pangolins are sold as souvenirs and ornamental displays, and their skin and scales are also used to make fashion accessories.

* There is no scientific evidence to support the medicinal claims surrounding the use of pangolin scales or body parts. In fact, the scales—which are one of the most sought after parts of the animal—are made of keratin, the same protein that our own hair and nails, horse hooves, and rhino horn are composed of. Scientific studies on rhino horn have repeatedly proven it to be void of any medicinal properties, which suggests the same is true of pangolin scales.

* All eight species of pangolin are currently listed on the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) Appendix II, which means only limited trade is permitted. However, a zero annual export quota has been established for all four Asian species, which means no pangolins can be exported from any country in the world. Many countries have also established legislation to further protect these animals from poaching.

* Pangolins do not survive well in captivity, which means essentially all of these animals in the illegal trade have been sourced from the wild. This has devastating impacts for remaining populations.

* As with most illegal wildlife trade, organized crime syndicates have commercialized the exploitation of these animals and are the largest suppliers of this black market industry. As pangolins are fairly slow in reproduction, they are being harvested at rates far above what they are capable of replenishing populations at.

* All four Asian species are threatened with extinction. The Chinese and Sunda pangolins are listed as endangered, while the Indian and Malayan species are both classified as ‘Near Threatened’.

* There are, currently, no reliable estimates for population sizes, as their elusive, nocturnal nature challenges researchers’ ability to study them in their habitat. Basically, we have no firm idea of how many may remain in the wild, meaning the most endangered species may be perilously close to extinction."

* The far easiest action you can take is by simply spreading the word! The major reason for the vast poaching of pangolins is the misbelief that medicine based on bodyparts and bodyfluids of exotic animals would have any beneficial effect on your health, sexuality or luck. Plush - Willy the Pangolin

Finally, after half a year Willy the Pangolin is finished! Ballons and cake for everybody!!!

After a strong run for the finishing line, getting his eyes right turned out to be something of a nightmare. But I must say, in the end I'm pleased with how they turned out.

I'll do some research in order to do an estimate of how many hours and scales I've put into this little fella, but for now it's party!!!

It's been a while since I posted an update of Willy. Mainly, because I had to take a break for a couple of weeks to rest my hands and then vacation started... Ever since things have been kind of rushy and still are, so I havn't been able to find much time to work on him.
At the time when I started my break, I was working on the left paw. As you can see, I'm still working on it. xD
Since I resumed, I've managed to add three new rows of scales, cut a bunch of scales and half an hour ago I added the upper part of the arm. So there is some progress, but currently it's coming slow and I still havn't quiet figured out how to do the head (left cheek is visible in front of the attached arm). But I'm getting into the spirit and it feels awsome to be back on track again!

I realized a few days ago, that mother''s birthday was only two days away and I had forgotten to get her a present or write her a birthday card. %D
Remembered to give her a call on her birthday (3 days ago) atleast and finished this cover for her earlier today.

Finally getting the hang on this and had a lot less problems with this cover compared to the previous ones.

Victor the (victorious) Worm might have outsmarted his rival Egbert the Jakana by hiding below the surface, but I think he is starting to realize, that he might have plunged himself out of a bad situation into an even worse one...

For weeks I've been hugging my trusty old hot-water bottle around the clock (especially the last one while being sick). It's a gift my late grandmother gave me many years ago and it's so nice to have it when feeling all cold and frozen... So I came up with the idea to give a pair of hot-water bottles to my nephews and sew individual covers. Here's the second cover featuring one of the river fish and Victor the Worm!

I'm quiet enjoying making those covers (atleast as long as the sewing machine is being cooperative) and might make a couple that will be up for sale, featuring various Siesta characters.

A few days ago I realized that, not only is winter late this year, Christmas Eve is practically around the corner. O.o;;;

Finally the color version is done. This picture felt very different to the previous ones due to the special light and it's killed of every last one of my nerves. xD;;;

Now I'm looking forward to a few days rest from painting anything pink. Seriously, I've felt colorblinded while working on some parts and areas. x___X

I've been looking for some scaly-looking fabric I could use for Pete the Crocodile. So far I haven't found any in the stores I've visited, but I found this dragon plush in IKEA and grabbed it.
Needless to say it wasn't too happy with the idea of surrendering its skin to Pete...

Originally meant to be Rocky from my Siesta Setting, I soon realized that the color of the fabric was way to bright to work for him. For a long time I felt very unhappy with this sick looking little frog, because no matter what I did, it just wouldn't look anywhere close to what I had in mind. In the beginning he still had the crazed "Rocky see's a fly"-look, but it simply wouldn't work, so I discarded the whole idea and enlarged the pupils instead.
79 spots, "eyeliners" and a hand wash later he ended up OK. After adding the fly (was fun to make) I think he looks nice, but definitely not a Rocky. I really need to figure out if I can dye that fabric for feature projects. o.O''

Materials: plush, cotton fabric, fake leather, semi transparent plastic. All details were embroidered by hand.

The Siesta family keeps growing and here's the latest addition; Cornelius' great, great, great, great, great, great, great... grandfather. (You get the idea)

I really thought that making the pattern larger, would solve a lot of problems. Actually, I still believe that's the case. However this fabric really put up a fight and in the end it took even longer, than when I sew Cornelius. xD;;;

After roughly ten nights of hard work he is finally done!

This one has really been hard on me and demanded all my cunning. x_X I thought creating the pattern would be the hardest part. But it turned out to be a lot more easy to do than the actual assembling the plush.

Maybe Cornelius is just paying me back for letting him sit down on poor Pete. One thing is for sure. Making the Cornelius plush has been a real pain in the ass! xD

I'm back from my vaccation at my old place. I had planned on doing a lot of painting, but in the end I never came around to anything of the sort. However, I found my old sewing-kit and enough fabric for a bunch of plushies!

Another Yuki and P-chan has seen the light of this world! Making P-chan's expression was a lot of fun, especially since I had intended his standard angry look, but then decided on trying out something new. Hm, still need to get that bandana done though...

"Playing in the snow" always felt like a drawing, that would do great as a key ring, so here it is!

The cat used in this one is my OC from one of the RPG's I used to participate in some years ago. His name is Arun and he's an Abyssinian, one of few cats still alive in that particular setting.

Originaly meant as a part of a larger painting, I never finished the background and it's been lying around unfinished on my harddrive for years now.

Finished the originaly first clayfigure now. Had to repaint him entierly after adding the bottomsections, since he got all dirty.
Painted his reflecting eyes in the water too, to make it look a little more like water. xD;
