I'm currently working on a myspace project for a local R&B artist named Lily Rubio.

So far, it's a basic myspace with only a header and background involved but in her instructions she requested I take the picture you see above, as the header and make it sort of glamorous.

I don't get many of those requests but I have dabbled a bit in photo manips and touchups, or what I like to call "smooth touch" [smooth for swäv (pronounced suave in english) and swav for soundwav]

I then did some research to find some of the best and natural ways to touch up photos without overbearing them with color and filters.

Here's a small list of what I did along with handy tutorials:

• Eyes: Enlarged pupil, enhanced iris - Tutorial [link]
• Lips: Selected around the lips and used "selective color" to enhanced their redness.
• Skin: Some minor blemishes with clone tool - Tutorial [link] also [link]
• Color: Selective color as needed for greens (shirt), yellows (earings). Also saturated a bit the reds and yellows since I used the "levels" tool to bring them back.
• Levels: Darkened a bit the darks and lightened the lights.
• Blurs*: Used as an extra layer on top of the skin at 40% opacity to give it that smooth look. Also for the edges.
• Sharpen**: Believe it or not, sharpen gives it an extra umph. If you sharpen the layer under the blur a bit. It's sorta' complicated but it works.

*The blurs trick is something I sorta' learned on my own. I'm sure some people have better ways, but this isn't a tutorial, more of like an explanation of how I did it.
**Sharpen is also something I do on my own. Dunno how I ran across it, but all I know it give the pics some depth and texture if used right.

I'm not a professional Fashion toucher-upper dude, but I think it works. Once the myspace is up, you'll be able to see it at www.myspace.com/lilyrubio. I'll let you guys know when it's available.

Regardless of what you may think, McCain is indeed an American hero. His war story is powerful. And now, after seeing the final debate, I have no problem saying that he has my vote. It seems the media hasn't been very fair to the guy and in my opinion, he'll serve as a better president than all the shadyness that seems Obama and his party has. That's about as political as I'm willing to go here on dA.

Okay. So I've been working on this for a while now.

How did this start? Well, frankly, I was fedup and tired of all this Obama hype/propaganda, specially from the Art Community. I say hype, because that is what it is. Obama has been painted as some sort of saviour by the majority of artists because it seems that it is the trendy thing to do.

The online community everywhere has been so hateful and hostile to the McCain/Palin ticket that it really just got on my nerves.

I decided to search to see if there were other artists that supported McCain and I was surprised to find nothing. Maybe it was were I looked. I was just wishing someone would do something.

So I thought, "What if instead of the "Obama Hope" poster, it was the "McCain Hero" poster that was created. So I guess I decided to give it a shot. I'm not big on duplicating anyone's style or even Illustrating this extensive on Illustrator. That is the result.

In regards to the original poster by Shepard Fairey. Like I said above, this is more of a tribute to McCain's persona and Fairey's style. I take no credit for the concept and idea, only for its execution. Frankly, I don't even think mine compares.

The colour scheme was based off McCain/Palin logo available for download at BrandsoftheWorld . com I decided to tweak the dark blue, light blue and creamy yellow so it is a bit different than Fairey's Obama version.

I know I could've tweaked it more, but frankly, I'm tired of working on it. LOL I just wanted to upload it and give McCain supporters a chance to download it. Seems like today was fitting since we just had the final Presidential Debate. If you missed it, you can see it all at the CSPAN page on youtube.

This piece is available for free download. I will also upload an Alternate Piece with the exact "Obama Hope" colour scheme.

Preface
After weeks of waiting to get an iPhone, I finally got my hands on it last Friday. I must say, that it is an amazing piece of technology. I upgraded from a scratched, broken, 4 year old silver Motorola RZOR so the difference is epic. I never owned an iPod so the 16GB is quite nice. The GPS and apps are real sweet. I still haven't unlocked its full potential. I have to admit, it is quite fragile and I found myself returning the FIRST one since the MIC got damaged after 1 day of use. :/ Either way, very good cellphone/GPS/ipod to own.

Enough about my experience with that, on to this deviation.

While browsing through my photos, I decided to make one image photo for a couple of friends in my address book and in turned out to be whole project.

After getting feedback from my featured friends on what a great idea this was, I decided to show it to the masses and offer this as a design service for anyone that wants to make their friends photos on their iPhone look snazzy!

Ok. One of the main reasons I bought my new cam was for this right here. Macro-photography of objects, projects, samples etc. While this one is not quite "macro" per se, it gives a good example of what I was trying to accomplish.

Before I bought my cam, I bought the material to create the box (white foam board) and since I'm in art school, I had all the spare materials handy.

I searched dA for some tutorials on light-boxes, didn't quite find any. But I did find a [link] through *JimmyOblues deviation to this neat tutorial online. If you didn't see the [link] above here is the [link] again.

The site recommends materials, how to put it together, the photography and post-prod. Great find.

What I did, I took a several photos with my cam on and off the tripod of my dope Dwight Schrute bobblehead available at this [link] I love the bobblehead, he always keeps me company and usually nods yes to my questions.

Afterwards, I loaded up the photos and did some very minor editing on PS. Used auto-levels to remove all the yellow tones.

Voi-la, that's it. If you're into photography, I'd definitely recommend you building your own!

This time around it was my 3rd time at the National level. I was a bit nervous and confident at the same time. I wasn't sure how the competition was going to be. It was 2006 all over again.

In this piece we had to create a logo and make a magazine ad. They also supplied a vector template to a phone. The phone would be by Nokia and it would light up. It was also fully customizable.

I really went all out by giving the phones a unique skin and used some cool verbiage. The moderator, after the competition was done, said he really enjoyed mine.

I placed Silver / second in my last year as returning champ. I really don't know how I screwed it up. The design was pretty on point compared to the others and the Gold winner's design was aesthetically missing somethings. I think I screwed up the mechanical part which really hurt my score after it was tally'd up.

Nonetheless, it was a great experience and God knows, maybe that girl that won needed the scholarship more than I. I wasn't bitter, just disappointed.

Notice, my design work evolve in all those three years. Amazing.

Anyway, if you're reading this and searched in dA for "skills usa" I want to encourage you to give it your all and learn all you can from those that know a bit more than you do. Don't ever think you know it all and use Skills USA as a stepping stone to bigger things.

We also had sponsors like Hallmark and the Art Institutes hold workshops. It was held in Kansas City, Missouri. About 15,000 students in attendance.

Competition was pretty fierce here. Tentions were high. You can see which students were good and which were in way over their heads. Some brought simple MacBooks others seemed like they brought their whole studio to compete.

My professor, Tim Martin, was the reason I pretty much made it to Nationals. His encouragement and guidance was amazing.

In this piece our "client" was Hersheys'. They were creating a new frog shaped chocolate bar for girls and boys. We had to create a logo and magazine ad. I also added verbiage to make things a bit more official. I chose brown since it represents yummy chocolate and blue to offset the brown and green. I angled it so its a bit more dynamic.

I ended up winning Gold in Nationals. You can see the video of when they actually called my name here [link] I decided to record it just in case I did win. I was rather confident of my work, but wasn't too sure. I missed the brief so I didn't know how well I did.

I won a $20,000 scholarship to the Art Institutes which is where I've been since Aug 2006. I have to thank and give all glory to God for that amazing blessing. That moment changed my design career and my life. I couldn't/can't thank my professor, Tim Martin, enough. Go Ohio State!

Expose: Shock Aero3D [link] // You can browse through your windows just like a Mac or like Windows Vista

Wallpaper: [link] Some real nice ones to fit all kinds of monitors. All this info is on the actual tutorial also.

Dock: Flyakite OSX // I will change it to another since its a bit slow to RealDock RK Launcher [link] by ~Asdrubale88 since it is more customizable [Now I changed it to RocketDock]

Anyway, I thought it was a nice way of telling people to stop cursing (cussing), in the long run, it only hurts yourself. Words are powerful tools.

So I thought of illustrating a nifty poster and drew a bomb with an F in it to say, hey, its ok to stop cursing, we should only be uplifting each other by speaking life into one another.

"Watch the way you talk. Let nothing foul or dirty come out of your mouth. Say only what helps, each word a gift." Eph 4:9 [The Message]

In short, stop dropping F-Bombs, daggnamit.

Well this project is [I say 'is' because theres 4 more I need to do] a snazzy one. I'll tell you what, I'm really beginning to like my Type Hierarchy course at Ai.

Anyway, this is for that class, another project based on Typography. We need to create 5 posters base on solely Type. We can use pictures and vectors but the theme must be a Font style. So I submitted my Garamond Book cover [link] as one submission and created this one today.

I really had this in mind for a while and this project let me execute it. I really dislike Comic-sans. Me and millions of other designers, so I decided to create a sort'of spoof poster. I think this is the first time I have EVER used C*mic S*ns.

• Program - Adobe Illustrator
• Photos - none
• Font - Helvetica Neu and C*mic S*ns [ugh]
• Texture/Vectors - none
• Brushes - none
• Body text was taken from wikipedia . org
