I've been working on this for a while now and I'm happy to finally get to share it with people. Definitely a labor of love this one and SO much fun to do at the same time. I was trying to think about the first time I could recall seeing the show when I was little and my best guess is it had to have been before I was 4 years old in 1973, because I distinctly remember being aware of the show before the animated series debuted in September of 73'. The series was probably more responsible than anything else in sparking my love of sci-fi and fantasy and i'll always be grateful that I grew up during its initial run in syndication. The trinity of Kirk/Spock/McCoy were the backbone and soul of the show for me. Individually they represented three distinct qualities whose interplay made for fascinating viewing..........Kirk the ethical leader, Spock the logical sounding board and McCoy the emotional confidant. The stories, both serious and whimsical captivated me, the production wowed me and the acting was always entertaining. I've included at least one, sometimes more, character, entity, starship or structure from every episode of the original series, 80 in all including the pilot, in this piece. The technology on display and the premise itself must have been remarkably original and new to audiences back when the movie debuted in 1971, keep that in mind if you ever sit down to watch it. It also has one of the most frightning sequences I've ever seen in a film, when the two lead scientists are airlifted into a town thats been affected by something that they have to identify before its too late. Don't wanna spoil it for you. I also appreciate the fact that Wise cast really engaging character actors for the 4 lead scientist rolls, even the lead James Olson isn't your typical "leading man" type, he was in a ton of TV, as well as the movies Moon Zero 2, Ragtime, Amityville 2 & Commando. There had never been such an amazing diversity of programs like these and they all did their part to expand my love of both genres. These shows had it all, drama, fantasy, high adventure, amazing production design (notably Space 1999 and the original Battlestar Galactica) great actors and actresses, wonderfully designed creatures and aliens (Dr. Who's Zygons come to mind immediately), incredible special effects and in the case of the Incredible Hulk the most haunting theme song ever recored in my opinion. Well, I still need to color this beast but I wanted to show it off at this stage because I'm so damn proud of this one, its taken me an age to reference all the costumes and ships, I just kept adding stuff, if I missed one of your favorites I apologize, Marvels 1978 Dr. Stange almost made it in and so did one of the moon girls from the great old Gerry and Sylvia Anderson series UFO! I could have put in almost every villain from Dr. Who and its almost criminal Davros didn't make the cut but there you go, you got the Supervoc SV7 robot and hes pretty cool too! Let me know what you think, cause I'm dying to hear, of course I hope all you 30 to forty somethings out there have some fond rememberances of some or all of these shows, and i'd incourage anyone unfamiliar with them to give them a shot sometime, see what all us old timers are always carrying on about.
This is stage one of my huge attempt to draw a little bit of every cool science fiction and superhero television show I ever watched growing up in the 70's. I've put together an homage to Mark Gruenwalds original comic book series from back in the early eighties using the characters from the best superhero comic on the stands today, Invincible! It's The Official Handbook of the Invincible Universe, an illustrated guide which attempts to detail the Invincible universe and the diverse collection of characters in it. The book features classic artists from the 60's 70's and 80's and many of the biggest comtemporary names in the industry today, a number of whom are right here on Deviant. I'm literally in awe of the talent in these books and I hope everyone who was a fan of the original Handbook series, fans of Invincible and comics in general enjoy it as much as I have putting it together. I'll follow up soon with a journal entry with more information about the 2 issue series which is scheduled to drop Nov. 2nd from Image Comics. I could sure use all the support I can muster here on Deviant to get the word out about this book, so if you're so inclined, please tell your friends about it, these books defenitely carry my 100% seal of satisfaction approval. If you like comics, awesome art and a book that will provide litterally hours of reading enjoyment, The Official Handbook of the Invincible Universe is for you.
