Princess Celestia Preview

Alright, I am finally previewing my Princess Celestia cosplay design. I haven't gotten back any really good images of the full cosplay yet, and only a few back from my first photoshoot which are mainly headshots.

So... I'll be doing another photoshoot soon, and in the mean time I'll be sharing these pictures here.

Sintra Basics 3 - Sanding down the seams

I know this looks really easy, but this really is my "trade secret". Easy right? Depending on the size of the piece, it might take a little while. Having some sort of power sanding tool would be helpful at those times.

Steps in the Tutorial:

So youve got a sintra piece that needs the seams cleaned up.
1. Using 60-80 grit sand paper, begin sanding along the edges of the trim, where the seams can be seen. Change direction frequently, as to help blend the seam together.
2. Finish off seams and small gaps by applying a small amount of superglue along the edge.

I use a worn piece of sand paper to first spread the superglue lightly, and then with a fresher piece I sand more rigorously to completely remove the seam.

The final result of this process will depend on your particular need and desire to continue sanding. If removing the seam is not that important, you will not need to use this process for long. However, you can completely remove the seam with enough sanding.

Sintra Basics 2 - Cutting out a template piece

So I decided that where I'll be uploading the full tutorial is on a "Foa Cosplay" website. Problem was, I didn't have a website. So I made one. I am hoping to have it up and ready by tomorrow night. It will be complete with this full sintra tutorial. So here is another item which I wanted show. Again, I know this may seem pretty simple to most people, but I try to cover everything when I do this sort of stuff.

Steps in the Tutorial:

1. Draft out all of the patterns the best they will fit onto the sheet youve measured out.
2. Using your box cutter place your non-dominate hand at the top of the sheet, with the blade in front so that you are cutting away from your hand.
3. Score several along the lines which youve drawn, being careful to be as accurate as possible. The cleaner the cuts are, the easier it will be to sand down the Sintra later.

For thin pieces, just scoring may have been enough to cut through the sheet of plastic. However, if you are using a thicker sheet, or maybe the line is shorter or curved, so you cant cut as deep as easily:

4. Once a fairly deep incision has been made, lightly bend the sheet at the cut so that it opens the Sintra, and creates a slight crease on the opposite side.
5. Turn the Sintra over and score along the line which was created from bending the Sintra.
6. Bend along the incision line until the piece snaps.
7. Afterwards I clean up any ragged edged Be Careful!

Sintra Basics 1 - Trimming a Large Sheet of Sintra

Hey everyone, guess what! I've finished writing the Sintra tutorial, so now I'll be uploading the smaller DA pieces of that tutorial, so I can link back to full size images and what not.

This is the very FIRST part of my Sintra Tutorial - how to trim down large pieces of the plastic. I know this may seem like overkill and a very intuitive thing to do(You know, just cut it? whats so hard about that?), and most people would already know this, but I was very unsure of how to trim down the thicker sheets of sintra when I began. I was very worried I would not be able to do trim down the sheets in my house, and would need a heavy power tool to do the trick. But it was very simple to do, so I wanted to include that as part of the tutorials just in case someone felt the same was as I did when I began.

Steps in the Tutorial:

1. After measuring out the size of the sintra needed, locate the line where you need to score the Sintra. Using your box cutter, score the sheet once or twice, depending on the thickness and pressure applied.
2. Turn the sheet over.
3. Lightly bend the sheet against the score line.
4. If the sheet has not broken, flatten out the Sintra, and rescore the sheet on the opposite side, along the original score line.
5. Gently bend the sheet of Sintra again, along the score line.
6. The sheet will snap in two clean pieces.

Again, I am working on the DA portions of the tutorial right now, so I'll be updating this link with ALL of the Sintra Tutorial links and information as I begin to complete it. The final tutorial write up will be posted elsewhere, as I don't feel DA really suits the format that I will need.

DeathScythe Soul Eater WIP Comp

I wasn't sure what everyone would want to see first, the WIP on the scythe, or the Sintra tutorial. Well since the tutorial will actually take time to write, I figured that I could whip up the scythe comp pretty quickly so here you go.

You see my progress, starting with just flat sheets of sintra. I used several layers of both 1/4" and 1/8" sintra sheets to add depth. Once it was generally assembled I started filling in the gaps you notice along the blade with "bondo" (just body filler). I tried a new one this time, which was somewhat easier to use. I still hated it though...

Anyways, after that was complete on both sides giving the scythe a nice clean look, I primered and sanded, and then painted and sanded. I added the little bits of painted detail, and then created the eyeballs with some heated up sintra I molded over a roundish shape... a wig head. Lol!

Afterwards I added the final details to the blade, finished painting, sanded some more and added a bit of clear coat. Since the scythe is so large, it was hard for me, in the space I have available, to get good shiny coverage of the blade. I'll probably be re-clearcoating sometime this fall for a few more cons. I just love this cosplays, so I hope you guys all enjoy it too... because i"ll probably be posting a lot of it. xD

Soul on a Leash

So I went to the weekend Coscom meetup in Houston, and there was this really sweet Soul cosplayer there. For some reason everyone wanted me to put "him" on a leash... But I mean, this cosplayer was so damn cute. I hope to do a real Soul Eater photoshoot with them sometime. I could fangirl over that face. Very soul-ish.

And sorry, it was super humid today, so my hair is HUGE. I ironed it forever too /sigh.

Lan Fan Automail WIP Comp 1: Hand

So it's that time, I've gotten back from my trips and now I've got time to post up some of these WIPs images that I've been talking about.

Since Lan Fan had a lot of little stuff going on, I figured I'd break it down into smaller sections to make it more manageable. I also figured that posting up all of these WIP images will help when I post the Sintra tutorial that I'm still writing /sigh.

So... The Automail Hand:

I created this using wonderflex with Sintra scraps as the knuckle pieces. So this was the easiest part of the automail design. Completed in about 3 hours total, from construction to paint. This is the blessing of wonderflex, it really is quick and easy to work with.

For the paint I used rub'n'buff as a quick base coat, and did a light cover of silver paint when I painted everything else. I also added a little clearcoat as a sealant.

When I wore it I *achem* superglued the finger tip pieces on, since I get really uptight about things falling off my cosplays, and used rub and buff as the silver paint on my hand. I don't know if it is bad for me, I just did it... so I can't really give advice on that xD

Lan Fan Automail WIP Comp 2: Shoulder

So... The Automail Shoulder:

Created using Sintra, layered up to give it depth. Sorry I didn\'t use black for the base color, but I just LOVE silver, gosh! I did attempt to use a lighter silver there at the end for the edges, but it ended up blending in a bit.

Anyways, tutorials featuring this piece will be coming in hopefully tomorrow, but /sigh, we'll see!

So it's that time, I've gotten back from my trips and now I've got time to post up some of these WIPs images that I've been talking about.

So... The Breastplate:

I know this isn't automail, but I really liked this item, I have a thing for breastplates (as you'll see with one of my upcoming cosplays!). This one was probably the quickest thing I've ever done, as there wasn't really any trimming or sanding required. I felt like her breastplate was a sort of cured leather, so I used sintra, and covered it with a textured fabric. I think it turned out great. ^_^ I molded this piece over my body form, and luckily only took 2 mold attempts on the back piece. The front was a winner on the first try!

So... The Automail Arm:

Created with Sintra, layered in a few places. It is two pieces, that I hold together with elastic and velcro. You'll notice a section where I feature the little circle. It looked a lot better before I heated the plastic, but afterwards it warped so I had to attempt to fix it by hand... didn't work so well. oh well!\

Not much else to say, painted it using Duplicolor in two different shades of silver, used a bit of clearcoat and polished!

On a side note, I didn't get any awesome images of this cosplay, all were taken on my iphone on top of a parking garage. So in attempt to make them worthy I used my powers of PS to take my image to Cloudsdale. ^_^

Sadly on this image I lost my work, because my powers of PS come and go, and saved my file down to this low quality version. SO this particular picture can't be easily edited any more boohoo! Oh well, I have a few more to do, I'll be more careful with those.

Spitfire Wig

This is my wig for Spitfire from MLP:FIM, the Wonderbolts captain.

A very quick cosplay I am whipping up for Akon 23. For some reason I just felt like I should do something new, and this cosplay felt like it would be comfortable and do-able.

Pandora's Armor WIP

Pandora from Saint Seiya

This cosplay armor was created using Expanded PVC board, I used Sintra this go round. I used a 3MM board, and in most of the armor I doubled up the main template sheet, as well as another sheet which was sanded down into the main piece to give the beveled appearance.

After the template pieces were cut out, and trimmed to fit each other, I slightly dremeled the edges to give it a slightly smoother appearance. After the edges were ground into each other I heated up each piece for molding. I did use an oven for this, rather than a heat gun.

Once molding was complete, which took several attempts on each item, they were sanded down and smoothed out using several grades of sandpaper. After sanding was complete they were good for primer, more sanding, wetsanding and finally paint... and then more sanding - and finally clearcoat.

Edit: this is super cool, i didn't notice till just now. You can totally see the path I was standing on it the reflection of my breastplate xD how neat is that!

Claymore BW

I am very proud to finally display some images of our hard work the past half year: Clare and Teresa of Claymore. Maria and I spent nearly a full two months churning out these cosplays, and then an additional month to finish up the portions we didn't like with our first pass.

We entered these cosplays to the WCS 2012, and were thrilled to be a part of that event. People should check it out more, it really is a great group of people, and we met so many awesome cosplayers just attending.

Anyways - these cosplays were constructed using a combination of vacuum forming styrene and modeling Sintra by hand. Our claymores are also a product of many hours of hard work - a great deal of sanding and more sanding involved.

Anyways, there really is too much to list. We wore these cosplays to Katsucon 2012 and Anime Matsuri 2012. We intend on also wearing them to a few additional cons this year. I hope you all like them, because while we love to look at them, I sort of hate wearing it. xD
