Most notably, the awkward pipe has been changed to not appear as though it's pulling escher-esque perspective, and other composition-changing elements have been added. Increased ambient occlusion shading, and a push for a more exaggerated atmosphere to really get the original feeling I wanted across.

The original un-revisited version is now in the links below, listed as Step 5. It leads here: [link]

This particular image was an exercise in background making. That is, to make a background similar in quality to what you see in animated movies. (Hence why Maia is NOT shaded here, just as you'd expect in a 2D animation.) I experimented with a new system of brushes and color swatches I created for painting convincing foliage quickly. It seems to work pretty well, so far The city visible in the back was created with a simple underlay of random scattered texture from another brush, then painting incredibly simple shapes of color sticking up from it. And ambient light.
So I did this scene.

This was the first piece I did utilizing my new revamped brush set seen here: [link]

The blurred out background was painted by first laying down solid shapes of color that resembled foliage. I then took a chisel / palette knife brush and painted those colors out to the left and right on a low opacity. Not too much longer, I ended up with this.

The view reminds me a lot of something you'd expect to see in a game like Riven.

(Edit: This was originally supposed to be Maia XD I suppose she looked really really boyish before. It really helped pull me out of a huge artistic rut. So a big special thanks to DICE studios! [Also, the mark on Maia's arm isn't a reference to Mirror's Edge. This has been a part of Maia's design since about 2001. It's supposed to be a scannable QR code -- also visible here [link] . In the past year though, I've slowly phased out of drawing this from her design.] I'd also like to add, that though Mirror's Edge was an influence on me during this era of my work, not everything with a primary color scheme is automatically Mirror's Edge related. It will launch soon!]

Influences: Boston MBTA, Tokyo Metro, Swedish graphic design.

Special Homage: Mirror's Edge for the much-needed influential boost it gave my work during late 2008. Marked by the runner's bag on the suitcase There was just something about the visual approach that game had that made me think differently about everything. XD Prime real-world examples are IKEA and Legos, which are two other things I love!

Check out the process for the drawing of the image: [link]
[kind of a big image]

Also, see how this image was colored in a step by step process here: [link]

Wacom Cintiq 12WX
Adobe Photoshop CS3

*** "Now Arriving" has been awarded the BFA Juror's Award for the graduating class of 2009 in Illustration. A few things have changed over the last 3 years since the last time I uploaded this, and some of them are different just because the original map I had listed some interests at the time rather than true influences. (Sometimes that can be hard to distinguish.) Over the last few years, I've come to realize more of my true prior influences, as I'm always falling back on them to do what I keep doing.

So, quick explanation going top down, left to right:

1. Studio 4C: Ever since I was in high school and early college, countless 4C productions have stuck with me in ways I constantly refer back to. TEKKONKINKREET and "Beyond" two particular works.
2. Scott Wills: I always liked the aesthetic of his work from several shows he did work for when I was a kid, such as Samurai Jack and Dexter's Laboratory. Many years ago I found out who he was, and got to see the wider breadth of his work to absorb. To this day Wills continues to be an influence on my work in terms of color palette, use of light, and scene construction.
3. MegaMan: Some of the best early gaming experiences I ever had. From MegaMan 1-6, and X-X3, I found the creativity of the worlds present in these games fun to try to draw my own when I was a kid. My school notebooks were full of drawings of MegMan, enemies, and robot masters. Unlike the Mario games, MegaMan games were some of the first I felt had true theme and purpose to them.
4. Swiss Graphic Design: I've always been minimalistic at heart, and love flat graphic shapes. When I learned that most of the world's modern design languages came from Switzerland, Sweden, and Germany, I've always looked at what's come out of those countries for inspiration on typography, layout, and color aesthetic in not only my graphic designs when I do them, but even my illustrations. For that reason it gets a bigger spot on my map.
5. Gainax: When I was a kid, (around 12-13 years old,) I watched this weird new thing called Evangelion with some friends. We got a copy of the whole series that was burned to a CD. It ran at 320x240, terribly compressed, with little yellow subtitles. Still, I got really into it. Back when I didn't even know what I was watching was called Anime and it was "a thing." I got into it not because it was from Japan, just because it was unlike anything I saw before on my TV. FLCL came shortly after, and seeing more of what Gainax was capable of blew my little mind. The characters, the interactions, the art design, it gave me a high that always made me giddy and say "I WANT TO MAKE THINGS LIKE THIS" in my head. I mean, obviously not make things LIKE Eva or FLCL, but rather things that replicate the feeling they give me. On some level, Gainax penetrates EVERYTHING I DO whether I'm aware of it or not.
6. The City of Boston: I've lived in Boston for the past 7 or so years. I've explored just about every inch of it and it's had a large impact on me, living in a major urban center, yet one that's so small and varied. Most of my illustrations bear resemblance to parts of Boston I've seen and hung out around. Boston is home to many different architectural styles, including most notably: Brutalism. My love of Brutalist structures and concrete as a construction material comes from Boston. I'll have to leave Boston someday, and its influence will likely remain for a long time after.
7. Packing up & Moving: Oddly enough, I've never lived (outside of my childhood) in the same place for more than 2 years. I'm always on the move. Some of the reasons are family related and personal, but usually it's just because of the nature of how I live in the city. I've had 6 different addresses in Boston. When I move into an apartment, I don't see it as a home, it's just a place to work, eat, and sleep, until it comes time to move to the next place. This has a profound effect on how I feel as an artist, and how I connect to the images I create. I'm waiting for the day I move into a place that feels like a home.
8. Mirror's Edge: In 2008/2009, Mirror's Edge opened my eyes to seeing light, shadow, and color in ways I'd never considered before. It was responsible for a kind of "reinvention" of myself as an artist, propelling me to replicate what I saw in the game, learn from it, and become a better artist to a professional level.
9. Boards of Canada: To this day continues to be the most influential music to my work. All of my artworks have a corresponding BoC track that inspired its feel in some form.
10. Kiyohiko Azuma: Back around the same time I discovered FLCL, the work of Azuma found its way to me and I became interested in "slice of life" story telling, (the notion that stories DON'T have to be all about epicness and saving the world, etc, it can be interesting in its complete everyday normalcy,) On top of this, Azuma's own illustration work resonates with me for his deep understanding of composition, perspective, and again, overall feel. Azuma got me to realize how to make images feel more "familiar," and easy to connect with to a viewer.
11. Alessandro Barbucci: He's been an influence of mine for years, and something of a personal goal. I look up to his work as an artist and storyteller. To roughly as good as him is where I'd like to be headed.

The "Knife" brushes in particular have been removed, and replaced by "Broad Tip 1 & 2" under the Flats Set.
- A fantastic painting set "Triangle Brushes" by Joshua James has been added to the Painting section, and I've been using these on almost everything since I found them.
- Also new are a bunch of sponge / spatter brushes I've been using often as texture bases to painting. Useful!
- The Chalk brushes are also a pretty essential part of Photoshop in general, so I've added a section just for them.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

About This Set
I borrowed an organizational method here that I saw Feng Zhu use in his videos. Create numbered brushes that go at the start of each row. (Note these number brushes are not supposed to be used.) They divide the brushes into the sections seen above in the preview, that way you quickly know which section you're in while browsing in icon view. The trick, however, is that you have to resize your brush window to the correct width to place all the numbers on the left-most column.
The blank 1px brushes are merely spacers. They contain no brush data. These can always be swapped out for your own brushes you'd like to add to those sections, if you like, or duplicate them to make full rows just in case things aren't lining up evenly.

Many of the brushes in this set have been made by me, but a good number of them have also been downloaded or shared to me by friends. I don't have all of the credit information for them. I've labelled brushes in the set with proper credits to their creators as I know of them, but if you see a brush of yours in here and it isn't credited to you, let me know!

Enjoy this new set, it improves greatly on the old set while remaining easy to navigate thanks to organizing it all.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

LEGACY VERSION 2 DOWNLOAD
Still looking for the lighter weight old version? It remains as a tiny reminder XD

Painting the grayscale layer is no different than just using the technique explained above it. This is also not exactly relevant to the actual use of the tablet, but more of a technique of Photoshop or another program. I only mention trying grayscale painting because it's easier than straight-up color painting, and can provide good practice on blending shades together. (Grayscale is like drawing something in 2D. It's easier because you're only concerned about two aspects of the process. Color is like 3D. It's harder because there's more to consider along the way.)

However, I will touch lightly upon adding color to the grayscale layer is a matter of either painting over it intuitively with appropriate values, or use a layer above the grayscale set to something like "Overlay" or "Multiply" and paint flat colors on it. It should take you roughly about a minute to paint a good looking plume of steam, fog, or smoke this way. The purpose of this tutorial is not to achieve photo realism, but instead to get an acceptable result when you're planning to finish an artwork in just an hour or two. Also great for thumbnailing and composition planning speed paints.

Edit - One other tip for consideration: I don't consider this important enough to put into the tutorial, [because you should be able to tell through observation,] but just in case... Remember that steam never goes in a straight line. There's always some winding twist or turn in a plume of steam from the airflow or wind passing through it. Steam is just water vapor, so it's lightweight and lofty. Smoke, on the other hand, is much denser in mass, and will usually billow and spread as it gets higher. Smoke gets blown pretty uniformly at an angle from wind.
