This sweet Wood Anemone (Anemone nemorosa) was growing in the moss on the backside of a boulder near a beautiful little stream. This is, I believe, the opus of my Astral Dreamers series. The dragon design came from pages and pages of sketches, culminating to this perfect shape. It is also one of the largest pieces I have ever done in the series (I had to rig a special tray just to bake it!). This one is dreaming, projecting, a vision quest. Swirls come to or from the pearl floating before it. I took a bit of liberty with the color however, to present him in the colors of a centipede I caught some years ago. I was struck by its beautiful jewel-green back, lemon yellow legs, and orangey head/tail. Scuttling among the moss and fall leaves, pure poetry in motion. <br /><br />around 9.5x15"<br />Dye and gutta on Habotai silk<br />(note, I used water-based resist and Jacquard green label silk dyes. Only the 4 primary colors were used. I drew the dragon design and then used the sculpting tools to "emboss" the aluminum into a 3-dimensional shape. I then gave it a black wash and polished it. No forms were used here, it's all freehand. I had a very specific vision for how I wanted to implement this piece and I feel it came out pretty much how I wanted. You know those beautiful colors you see on a bubble, or oil on the surface of the water? Kind of like that. <br /><br />From the description: <br /><br />"Decorus Letum was forged out of dream and song. To say it was forged at all is kind of a mistake. The sword was drawn out of possibility in a fashion that would have seemed almost passive to anyone unfamiliar with the obscure techniques used. Metal wasn't heated, beaten, and forced to take a shape unnatural to it; the ephemeral forces summoned by the Fair Folk were simply allowed to become what they always were. In this sense, Decorus was never really created; it just always was. This baby American Robin (Turdus migratorius) had fledged a little early, and he did not yet understand that I was dangerous. With a little patience and reassurance he let me get in very close to get his picture. By the next day nobody could approach him. The area there is a haven for amphibians, and in the spring the whole place is like a wet sponge. The Eastern toads come out in droves and you have to actually watch your step!  <br /><br />This handsome fellow is all in breeding color and looking VERY fine in his muddy puddle... There were a whole lot of them stuck in several of the fountain pools, they could jump in but they couldn&#039;t make it back out.  They were very happy to hop up onto your hand to get out of there! I am a deckhand on the Windy and we did a night/day trip to get there. The water was the most incredible color and it was silky smooth in the fading light of day... breathtaking. Sadly, he had been hit by a car and I found him moments later.  His brilliant green eyes had already begun to fade some by the time I got this shot, and within 20 minutes they were completely grey.  The net pattern of his wings is just breathtaking.... <br /><br />I tend to like to identify any creature I take photos of, and from what I was researching this appears to be a Hine&#039;s Emerald Eye (Somatochlora hineana).  Unfortunately I did not get any shots of the terminal cerci, which would have been a definitive identifier!  It is the right size, right markings; but it is supposed to be EXTINCT in the area I found it.  The Hine&#039;s Emerald Eye is the *only* dragonfly that has been placed on the Endangered Species List, and if anyone could help me positively identify this little guy I&#039;d be very grateful! This is a Rove Beetle, I&#039;m not sure which kind.  I couldn&#039;t help but notice those ruddy marks on his back as he scuttled through the debris on the ground.  As you may guess, I spend a lot of time in nature looking at the ground. <img src="http://e.deviantart.com/emoticons/w/wink.gif" width="15" height="15" alt=";)" title=";) (Wink)" /> He was fast, as it was a hot day, but I did manage to sneak a close-up shot of him.  I&#039;d say he&#039;s probably 3/4" inch long or less.<br /><br />Edit: Likely Staphylinidae Ocypus but I don&#039;t know which species. Up to my chest were various weeds, including dogbane.   I was taken aback by the gorgeous little walking rainbows there were eating the leaves in the sun.  Luckily, I had my trusty camera with me. This is a Dogbane Beetle (Chrysochus auratus). The action was fast and furious, and my camera is slow, I must have taken about 30 shots but only this one really lived up to my standards.  I am terrified of wasps, so shooting these was a very hair-raising experience!  But SO WORTH IT!  Wasps are very clean animals, you can see they have really been at it by how dusty they are.  Between &#039;rounds&#039; they would dust themselves off.<br /><br />AGGRESSIVE WASP IS AGGRESSIVE.  DEFENSIVE WASP IS DEFENSIVE.<br /><br />Update: OK according to my research these are European Paper Wasps (Polistes dominulus), which are an introduced species.  I had not seen these much before, I am more accustomed to the native Paper Wasps (such as Polistes fuscatus).
