This series within the "Frail" series touches largely on the wretchedness of the subject. Malformed and discarded by whatever brought it into this world, it is mindless to all but its own suffering. These pieces work their way out of me when I feel them.

Why does it live? Why can't it die? Why was it abandoned? How long has it been alone?

Though this work was inspired by concepts in the H.P. Lovecraft story, "The Case of Charles Dexter Ward," this series can also be taken as an allegory of abuse and neglect, especially of those who should have been protected, the most vulnerable of us all. ]]>

This is a centipede loosely based on the design of the Giant Red-Headed centipede. I took a bit of liberty with the color however, to present him in the colors of a centipede I caught some years ago. I was struck by its beautiful jewel-green back, lemon yellow legs, and orangey head/tail. Scuttling among the moss and fall leaves, pure poetry in motion.

Here's my pretty all finished! If you think my color choices look impossible, just try looking up "veiled chameleons." I think this experiment was mostly successful; I used a different type of silk paint and a chemical fixative. I lost some color depth; I think I'll attempt a steam fix on the next one.

Later I did a pencil drawing on it, then put on some colored pencils, then some gouache, then some alcohol, then uhh I don't remember anything else.

This piece is small, about 3.5x3.5". And already spoken for ]]> zyphryus which she then covered with clear gesso. I tend to like to identify any creature I take photos of, and from what I was researching this appears to be a Hine's Emerald Eye (Somatochlora hineana).
