This is a step by step of a piece that is included in a new Star Trek book just released this week. [link]
Starting at the top left moving l to r

1. Start with mid range flesh tones gradually building the shadows and plains on the face. I use about six different colors for this working from mid to light.
2. Same as step one do the hands then adding light cool shadows
3. Go back in with cooler shadows and darker areas like eyes and hair. No pure black
4. Spock undertones like step one.
5. Cooler shadows
6. Darker areas like eyes and hair. no pure black in this stage.
7. Pure black shadows then building out with warm grays on Kirk's shirt. Dark to light. I have also taken the mid range dull ivory to do the shadows of the wrist bands and trek logos on their shirts. Neutral grays on pants.
8. Spock's shirt done in tonal grays again from shadows to highlights.
9. Drop in background and darker shadows. Also hit the whitest highlights with a white gel pen and white water color.
10. Digital colors on the shirts and a slight tint to the background. Balance the skin tones and the contrast.
11. *Final piece.
