But while converting tactical espionage action into a turn-based card game sounded interesting, too many key elements were lost in translation, making for a game too clunky for stealth and too random for action.

The first strike against AC!D is that it's not canon, which distances about 75% of its audience. And not in MGS: Ghost Babel's 'alternate sequel' bent of non-canonicity, either - aside from a main character who vaguely resembles Snake and another model of bipedal tank, the characters and story have barely any relation to the franchise. AC!D has its share of militaristic circus freaks, but gimmicks like 'goth lolita with teddy', 'missing an arm', 'female Decoy Octopus' and 'a really good ventriloquist' come off more irritating than memorable, particularly since there's no voice acting.

Its real problems lie in its collectible card-based tactics. Movement, weapons and equipment are all drawn from a deck of at least forty cards, with a maximum hand size of six. The issue is that doing anything beyond moving and skulking involves a great deal of time and luck, either to draw duplicate cards or a certain combo, and then hope the resultant dice rolls turn up your way.

Using cards costs a certain amount of...well, 'COST', or time units. There's not a set COST limit per turn, but incurring too much forces you to wait longer while the enemy does more stuff. But the kicker is, Snake (who is alone for a third of the game) can only use two cards each turn, which means he can't pull off much of anything without giving the enemies a turn in between. Something as elementary as setting up a Claymore mine takes Snake an entire phase: move to the space you want it (one card), set the mine (two cards, so your turn's now over), stand right on top of it and hope to buttfuck that the enemy doesn't set it off on their turn. Sure, you could move to the designated spot and wait till next turn to place the mine, but most enemies don't move on their patrol routes until you're very close and do tons of COST-heavy actions each turn, meaning you'll spend multiple turns in a row standing around milling through your deck and waiting for the enemy's move if you want to play a reactive game.

Weapons are even worse; since their accuracy is pathetic (50% chance to hit with a sniper rifle? Really?) and each attack requires a duplicate gun card as ammo, you'll often spray an entire magazine at an enemy's back from point blank, missing half the time and barely getting them to half health, then be unable to follow up with another attack or retreat to cover until after the enemy takes his turn, calls the alarm, and five guards rush to empty their AKs in your face.

Since earning an S rank on a mission requires low total COST used and damage taken, the only way to get through a level that quickly without kills/alerts is to abuse Stealth Camo and COST-reducing cards so you can take move after move without ever letting the enemy have a turn. That's right, Stealth Camo - a game-breaking cheat in past Metal Gear games - is now an essential element of stealth here and is available very early on, while classic techniques like choking out an enemy or tranquilizer pistols aren't available till halfway through the story.

Indeed, judging by the multitudes of +HIT (accuracy), +max health, +% chance of reaction shots, healing and attack evasion cards in the game, it almost feels as if the game is trying to encourage sweep-and-destroy tactics, a la X-Com: UFO Defense. But I didn't want X-Com from this game, I wanted Metal Gear, and that's absolutely not what I received. And I will certainly not be playing any other Metal Gear spinoffs in the future.

EDIT: No, there's even more to whine about! Completing missions awards points for buying booster packs of random cards, which means getting what you want involves grinding early missions for more points and more packs. The game attempts to make past missions more replayable by imposing one of these conditions each time:

Kill all enemies in the level.
OR
Reach the end without being detected, or it's mission failure.
OR
One of the enemies has a keycard to the exit. Kill guards until one of them drops it, then finish the level.

The problem is, the selection is always random. And since doing anything is such a hassle, your deck can only be focused around either combat or stealth, not both. So when you load into level with a deck filled with Stealth Camos and COST reducers and are told to kill everyone, your only option is to quit and reload the mission until you get the objective your deck is built for. He's touched your life in more ways than you know, and it's the bad kinda touch.

His birthday's actually May 8th, but I wasn't gonna wait a whole month to post this. So...uh, お誕生日おめでとうございます!

Pictured above is the main cast of Mad Bull 34, an R-rated buddy cop comedy set in the mean streets of 1980s New York City - and one of my favorite Koike works. From left to right, we have:

John "Sleepy" Estes: A hulking officer of the 34th Police precinct notoriously known as "Mad Bull", who upholds the law in his own fashion: killing suspects for no reason, and moonlighting as a pimp for the entire district. This puts him at odds with organized crime, but be it sharpening the beam of an office chair or tying grenades to his pubic hair, he and his partner Daizaburo manage to cheat death time and again.

In the OVA, Sleepy seems perpetually angry, but in the manga he usually wears a comically cheerful, nonchalant expression - even when murdering criminals.

Daizaburo "Eddie" Ban: Mad Bull's straight-laced Japanese-American partner. Daizaburo is in constant distress over his partner's criminal streak, rampant bloodlust and insatiable libido, but over the course of the series he begins to understand Sleepy, after learning that he donates his pimp money to rape clinics and local hospitals. Whatta saint, am I right?

After discovering Daizaburo is a virgin, Sleepy repeatedly tries to shack him up with any number of his prostitutes, but as signified by the headband, Daizaburo only believes in true love - namely,

Perrine Valley: Daizaburo's heartthrob, and police lieutenant of Queens' 110th Precinct (don't listen to the Wikipedia page, they say it's 110th in the manga). During her first appearance she comes across as quite the femme fatale, but over the course of the manga her sole purpose becomes being taken captive and having all her clothes torn off to spur Daizaburo into action - by the latter chapters she's spending more of her time in lingerie than anything else. Also, because the OVA was dubbed in the U.K., Perrine is given a conspicuous British accent, despite supposedly being from Brooklyn.

Mad Bull 34 is perhaps best remembered by its four-part OVA produced in the 90s, which can be found in its entirety on YouTube.
A happy pre-emptive birthday to esteemed manga writer Kazuo Koike (now 76 years old), author of such...er...fine works as Lone Wolf and Cub, Lady Snowblood, Mad Bull 34 and Samurai Executioner, as well as mentoring such creators as Yuji Hori (Dragon Quest), Tetsuo Hara (Hokuto no Ken), and Rumiko Takahashi (Inuyasha).

However, I remember the series much more fondly in its original form, the manga drawn by Noriyoshi Inoue; as you can tell, most of my references came from the printed version, and I tried using as much hatched shading and bolded outlines as possible, to imitate Inoue's wonderful style.

The scanlation can be read here ([link]), and is VERY NOT SAFE FOR WORK; unfortunately, it only goes up till Chapter 27, and given that the homepage the scanlator gave is a dead link, I'm guessing that unless someone gets their hands on the old tonkubans, we won't be seeing more of the series over here (this ran in 'Young Jump', can you believe that?). The H6K is an internally developed design derived from the venerated HM assault rifle series (primarily the HM5 and HM6), and saw widespread use as the staple weapon for Kiryu-kai special forces in the latter half of the war, thanks to its compact size, durability, and cheapness to manufacture in the city's war-torn infrastructure.

However, the net result is a weapon of mediocre accuracy and anemic penetration. While an ideal weapon for the Kiryu-kai guerillas, any modern military would do well to develop more powerful ordnance.

The H-6K offers a selection of attachments, including a skeleton stock, detachable sight and silencer - useful for ambush tactics, but exacerbating the gun's poor accuracy.
H-6K

Standard issue infantry submachine gun.

As such, most troops prefer the vanilla version - or a different gun, whenever possible.

As a favored weapon of squad leaders, the H-6K accepts tracer magazines, for ease of marking targets; these are marked with a red tab. However, Z.H.P. does cut you a break by adding your accrued experience to your "base level", so that you get a bit stronger each time you revert. While Ito led his lieutenants to victory in the capital during the final hours of the Grand Battle of Kazuo, Sam held back Anaheim reinforcements at the front lines. After inflicting grievous losses from a fortified sniper nest, she was caught in a massive airstrike that left her injured, unconscious and declared KIA after days of picking through the rubble.

What I hope will be the final design for the Marksman (and later, Sniper) CO. Her design is probably the one I've changed the most throughout. Still not sure about the eyes, though; do they make her look evil? It's been quite a while since I've worked on this.

If someone does notice a discrepancy b/w this uniform and the Heavy Weapons one, it's b/c Bouquet's still a cadet, so her outfit lacks the beret and shoulder emblem exclusive to commissioned officers.

I found out only recently that the rifle I gave her in early sketches ([link]) is aesthetically identical to an M14 EBR, so I just gave her that, instead (minus the magazine, of course).
“Sam” - Professional assassin and soldier of fortune.

Since guns can get upgraded and swapped out in the game, it doesn't really matter, anyhow.

I drew this over one of my earliest sketches ([link]), though I made some changes to accommodate uniform designs.

Someone told me once that I like to draw large thighs.

DOWNLOAD FOR BETTER VIEW.

EDIT 3/28: I KNEW something was missing!
