These are fairly early, and were part of a "pitch" for a 2D Saturn Sonic (strange that it was 1997--I am sure I was planning it earlier than that!) with some level concepts. Notes on the paper indicate that these look "nothing like I wanted" or "not very sonic-like" but I can definitely remember being really proud of them. These were drawn specifically to be sent to my friend, so I apparently didn't have any real qualms with folding up the page they were on and sticking them in an envelope (the folds are visible).

Anyway, I felt this in particular was a thing that needed to go on my DA page. Nothing like admitting your plans for what would surely have been "the best" Sonic game possible (I remember writing up a huge document and emailing it to Sonic Team, which of course I'm sure they ignored completely). Anyway, these are the levels I had drawn:

The Train Zone, where you would alternate chasing after Eggman's train and also riding on it.

Unnamed Highway Zone, which was supposed to be built out of 3D polygons and the idea was that it would spin crazily and appear really complex as you moved through it with a 2.5D-type camera. When I thought of this, I'd never seen a game like Klonoa (or even NiGHTS, though obviously I had played it by the time I drew this) so I remember it being a difficult thing to explain, but noted in the description "you can see the 3D effect," and you can.... sort of...

And Disaster Zone, which was supposed to have dynamic platforms collapsing and rising up from below or tilting or whatever as you ran through (and also lots of explosions and stuff--meteors falling, etc). I don't think I ever saw anything in a 2D game that matched my vision for this until New Super Mario Bros Wii, or possibly Donkey Kong Jungle Beat (some crazy platforms in that game!). ]]>

Tiny Barbarian is swarming with real enemies!

What I'm setting up right now is just one of those "fight forever" kind of deals, the real game won't have this kind of insanity (or will it?!) The attack system still does the same moves as the first game (plus some new ones) but it feels a lot better--connecting all hits from the combo is a breeze, and it's not so easy to go careening into enemies if you get reckless.. Just beating up hordes of enemies is quite fun!

Matsushita is probably best known as the cover artist for Famitsu magazine, seriously, look it up and you'll see some awesome stuff. I think my favorite of his earlier works especially are his covers for the Japanese Adventure Island titles, with their mix of goofy monsters and hottie jungle babes... I just focused on the latter for this one.

Anyhoo, the result is this, just practice, trying to figure out how to make some good use of the airbrush tool in Photoshop. You probably already know I avoid the airbrush, I prefer the more painterly brush options, if not just a circle with no brushy attributes at all! Making use of it at all was a lot of work, and for a single character, this is undoubtedly the most layers I ever did (each breast even has its own layer!) so I could more easily simulate the "masking" effect of real airbrush use. I'm so used to just going straight in and painting "directly" what I want, this was a real stretch for me!

I pretty much went at it without any direction, so if you can point me to some good airbrush tutorials or have some tips, (or if you just want to drop a line about a time you challenged yourself to a different style!) I'd love to hear about 'em! ]]>

The titular Dungeon is where most of the stories take place as adventurers from all over are drawn to test their skills and gather treasure, but they are all inevitably defeated inside the dungeon and whatever valuable items and treasures they were carrying being property of the dungeon, making the inhabitants richer and the dungeon capable of attracting even more adventurers, and so on.

These are two of the dungeon's monsters, the perpetually-hungry Gro-gro and the aggressive, heavily tattooed Zongo.

Astroman is so frustratingly close to being done! We thought we were ready to go but our testing has determined that easing up the difficulty may be necessary. Easier modes will have different enemy placement, more checkpoints, and other concessions to those who don't want to play a game that is pretty hard.

I wouldn't say I'm the greatest fantasy reader out there or anything, far from it in fact, but after a steady diet of Eddings, Brooks, Goodkind, and Jordan (to say nothing of the JRPG genre!), it actually blew my mind a little that there could be fantasy that wasn't "high." The day-to-day, "unimportant" adventures of rogues like Fafhrd & the Gray Mouser were a huge breath of fresh air for me and now I feel like I can't get enough of the low-fantasy Sword & Sorcery genre. Really, it's highly recommended.

I initially drew a much cooler skull in the background but I felt like it just took over the whole image. You can see that skull here: [link] ]]>

This is what I've been working on for the past few months, along with programmer Daniel Roth and musician Jeff Ball, and it's coming close to completion (or at least deadline) pretty soon! It's a 2D platformer with some exploring elements, soon to be available on Xbox Live Indie Arcade. It's about a lone astronaut marooned in space trying to recover missing parts of his ship. Not shown in the video, you'll actually fly from planet to planet in the rocket in an asteroids-style minigame, increasing its range and abilities with the items you find.

I'm especially excited because I finally figured out how to capture and edit game footage, it was a lot of fun. Naturally Youtube compresses the poo out of it, the high-res images here show what the game actually looks like.

It's going to be really cool guys!
