The scan loses something of the original, particularly the subtle, deeper hues in the neck. This not-so-great photograph hopefully gives some idea.

Although the word 'peacock' has come to signify both sexes in common usage, it only properly refers to the male. I use 'peafowl' for the bird itself, and 'peacock' and 'peahen' for the male and female respectively.

Unlike the more famous blue peafowl, where the female is startlingly drab by comparison to the male, both sexes of the green peafowl are extremely alike. Apart from obviously lacking the long train of covert feathers, the green peahen is just as beautiful as the cock, with only subtle differences. In the wild and during the moult, it can often be very difficult to tell them apart. Just one of many reasons why I maintain that the green peafowl is always superior to the blue. ]]> Pavo muticus). We had a really lovely day of drawing, punctuated though it was by yelling children and a sudden call for evacuation. I never did finish the story and have long since mislaid what there was of the manuscript. Just as well. During a small tidy-up, I've unearthed a few sketches I made of some of the principal characters, and this was the most complete of the small set. In fact, it was because I wanted the chance to draw some very extravagant or unusual breeds of fancy pigeons that the story was conceived at all. I forget how long ago this was now, but it was at some point between 2003-05.

Operetta buffs may enjoy my purloining of the names of this pair (who are lovers, as though you hadn't guessed) from Johann Strauss II's Die Fledermaus. ]]>
