I've started painting on a very skew canvas - warped a bit by the self-made wooden frame that didn't come out as straight as I meant it to. I intended the artwork to be a mess-around canvas that I will keep reworking and improving. BUT now it seems to be an artwork in its own right, with blues and greens flowing into each other with different blending textures lending it a very expressive quality. The size is about 840mm x 400mm.

A comp of 4 pictures. The only digital editing was cropping and putting them next to each other.

The images were all done in camera - 2 of them with a Lomo Colorsplash camera, and the other two is from a film first exposed in my Pentax K1000 and then rolled back and exposed in a Fisheye camera.

Lomography is fun.

My entry into the Absa L'Atelier 2008 Competition.
Couldn't decide whether I should put it in Political or Landscapes as catagory...

Rationale

Dominating the memory

In the respective two scenes nature, and then the human-built environment is reduced to a mere memory – like a black and white film or old photograph. Man dominates nature and builds factories, cities and roads, dwarfing nature and making the natural environment of an area obsolete, a faint memory of what it once was. When nature reclaims an office block and forgotten car in a ghost town, the human element - the building, the metal, the materials - become a distant memory and nature repositions itself to dominate the once-inhabited area.

During the process of creating these contrasting, but similar scenes I have experienced it more challenging to draw nature into and onto the built environment. This struck me as relevant, since we as humans easily and in short periods of time rise up buildings and build more roads, while nature takes centuries to decompose unnatural materials and truly reclaim an area that we have exploited.

12/03/08 My entry was not accepted and I'll be going to the gallery tomorrow to fetch my work. There's always next year...and the year after that. And the year after that.

We don't always realise just how much we're polluting the air we breathe. Deforestation contributes, since there's less trees to use the ENORMOUS amount of carbon dioxide we produce.

That's a real rusted exhaust. And at the student exhibition I had a lot of cleaning to do to remove all the bits of rusted metal from the venue's floor.

Just a little progress update... I'm working on stuff for two art exhibitions, a commission for a bread board painting and some other random projects. So...i'm not just sitting around

As yet unfinished works - From left to right:
(i) tree in acrylic and pastels on canvas, (ii) tree in charcoal on paper, and (iii) ink and acrylic abstract on canvas.
