Song Kangho (송강호) is one of my favorite korean actors. you may have seen him in countless asian cinema including the good bad weird, the thirst, foul king, number 3, memories of murder, but his performance in sympathy for mr vengeance was nothing less top notch next to any world class actors. and yes, that film happens to be one of my all time favorite of all time of alllll time. all time! now that i have developed the taste for caricature quickies... another installment of portrait series!

ive been working on sequential for this project lately, and i once again realized how challenging it is to make a comic.

about 3 years ago while i was in Portland oregon, i got an invitation from EA tiburon in Orlando florida to potentially join their massive clockwork. i had much respect for the art director there, Phil Straub, and i gave my shot shot at it.
we both knew it won't be fun job for me, doing concepts and illustrations for sports game.
i pass this offer, thank you very much.
me doing sports star pin ups... right.

this turn of event certainly open the new doors in my head, that in fact, game industry wants what i can offer.

this piece is done using the face reference of football star.... i can only remember his initials RM. but who cares? not exactly one of my proud piece.

the center piece of this painting is most certainly Kingo, the thief boy holding up a holy calligraphy (부적, 符籍, a talisman or an amulet) to repel the creeping demon ninja. facial expression captured on the boy is what makes me enjoy what i do.

Kei, Ninja girl illustration was done for a package design for ball jointed action figure created by Local toy company Triad toys.
i never got paid for this work, and cant seem to get ahold of my client... one of many reasons why i am now a mere employee of video game company

character was designed by Triad, so i dont claim any involvement in character design process. its a bit plain design for my personal taste, but making a ninja girl beautiful is always fun thing to do.

Ashaire-Ninja Talkshow concept

Ashaire, wandering blue blood who is worshiped and followed by homeless and stray dogs.

as you can see, this character is rather detached from rest of the Ninja Talkshow cast in style (lack of eastern infulence in her costume?) but i wanted to add a stand alone tale of a young girl, who was born in a loyal family who travels the harsh side of the world helping those who are in need. eventually building her own army of people in unfortunate circumstances. maybe this could be a tale told in a talk show.

i gotta get to work so i can add too much descriptions now, but i will try to add a little more later.

Last year i had privilege to to work with talented indy film director/writer Michael Ojeda, from Reigning Pictures.
this picture, is one of the early visualization of key moment in the story, and developed for cover art for Graphic novel adaptation.

as of now, this Project was put onto SLEEP mode, because both Michael and myself had to move on to different project, but now we feel that new life is being inserted into this potent project. hopefully, on next piece i would be able to tell you more about this project!

Featuring your future talkshow host, Epitaph.

Hobums, one of the most intelligent beings roamed the continent of Nine Tortoises are now the only inhabitants of the mysterious Clock tower near Goa Forest. Once theyve discovered this isolated lethal sanctuary, they were no longer traveling the continent to televise their wisdom, but they have settled where hallucinogen, Devil sprouts flourish. For over decades, Hobums have been saturated in addiction of Devil Sprout smokes in this very same spot. In return, they have gained illogical thinking process and laziness. They have become the beasts without claws, the wisdom seekers without consciousness. Epitaph, new comer to this barbaric world put her first step in the worst place imaginable. She could have been an early breakfast for these creatures, but Hobums realized great talent hidden within this young human girl; The Healing magic. Its still raw and unpolished ability, but her music with bassy down-tempo chill-out rhythm and melodies certainly is tasty enough to soothe these poor souls psyche. They all understand Epitaph cant stay here forever, so Hobums demand one last, ENCORE or DIE performance.

Ninja Talkshow Character concept #03, ARIYAN

The youngest daughter of Hokuichi Bloodline, the Lord of Sullen dark ninja clan, Ariyan is everything but the kind-hearted. A little sister of Hokukage [link] and Hokugen brothers, She has been one of the most leathal, and silent assassins well known in the industry of assassination. however, her weakness comes from her fragile mentality, firy temper and jealousy towards other talented, and beautiful femme fatals. her agressive persona has brought up many duels in recent years, and that very evil nature also brought EPIPHANY in her proximity which lead her to an end of her own beauty.

This is the third addition to our ninja talkshow concept collection. you can see some of the rawness in design and color, but it was one of early characters we designed, and i particularly liked the expression on her face, so we decided to keep her in the list.

Taj Lotus: NTS concept

Taj Lotus, One of a few elite beautiful girls who were under the care or Epiphany.
Epiphanys teaching is now being practiced only by Taj, and she is one of the most influential merchant in the market district, operating a franchise of sauna/bath houses in multi-complex establishments. She has upgraded and brought a new standard rules on entertainment/business scene, and considered as one of the most admired woman of today. Her wealth, and her sense in beauty is mimicked and worshiped, as well as become target of jealousy, yet her financial control over many industries and her elegant martial art ability kept her in place on the summit of many competitions. Although, her position is neutral between the force of good and evil, she promises no harm to Epitaph, the only true blood line of Epiphany.

ive made 10 PSD files while i was developing this piece, capturing each significant milestones. may not be for everyone, but i will attempt at making an advanced-tutorial using this meterial in near future. (im in portland oregon right now, but i will be visiting Bayarea california for a week, next week. that will give me some free time while hangin out with my old folks. ill see ya soon MOM!!!! )

id like to dedicate these series to my very dear friend, Stacy. Aka JUJIKA, in spirit of celerbrating her health recovery.
i think the technical achievement in these recent semi-realistic approach was only possible by stacy being there to help me focus on our career together, and her recent absense help me to put together things we've learned together into a series of solid techniques.

the phrase " the angel's here to stay" fits so well for this situation. little sister stacy has been in bed for past couple of weeks, and some of us worried that she might be walking on such thin ice, but she was indeed strong, and choose to stay here with us. Your friend stacy is FINE. she is in recovery phase now, and she will be back in no time. she will continue to mesmerise you with her beautiful art. Our endeavor to share imaginations and visual expressions with you will have no expiration date.

when Lan agreed to join Epiphany's risky endeavor to infliterate the evil army of dark ninja, they all knew this seemingly impossible mission might actually be something they can bet their hopes on.
it has been many years since LAN attempted to apply the rules of civilized society in this world. a little step at a time, those who without the blades, and sharpened shuriken found themselves protected around the continent of 9 tortoises.

Okii Jijin, A (shaolin) monk, an Inspirational speaker, A Stand-Up comedian has a different point of view about the world of "nine tortoise continent." Mess studios' very own mascot Hashi hime, aka Chopstick princess

created and drawn by me, and painted by talented and lovely

this picture has many significance as far as our studios' recent growth is concerned. this character will represent our upcoming online store visual junkyard.
those who bought IMAGINE BOOKS from messs studio/visual junkyard, have got a print of this character design! so some of you may be familiar with this image already ^^

we have created 3D, real life apprx. 9inches tall sculpture for the first time! its a big new step!!!!

having said that, i would like to bring your attention to very talented and very charming artist among us.
is a gem u should keep your eyes on. if you havent seen her work, you havent been searching hard enough to find true talent in this community.
alena, aka Mumbojumbo and i had great time collaborating on this project. it was our first collaboration, and we made such an excellent progress, that our collaborative endeavor will continue. what you see here, and what you see on alena's page is just first step we took together. and yes, please look forward to more stuff in the future!

PART OF Lycéenne Fatale project

A collaborative effort between myself, and talented painter PEACHYSTICKS! woo~

okay. this one is little bloody.
Im not into macabre, or monster type stuff in my work though, when the story demands such, anything can be done.

This is something our mess studio has been brewing @ the back burner for some time now, and you have seen afew character concepts. (Morganne Lefeyétte: [link] )well, typical way of developing stories and projects are usually done behind the closed door, but our approach on this is little different. sort of community project @ [link]

thanks to talented writer along with we have quite interesting progress in terms of developing stories.

with 's help, we were supposed to meet one of the publishers in Europe at san diego comicon this year, particularly aiming for french audiences, however the publisher has canceled their trip to US, and at the same time, we ended up with other great gigs, so this project had to put aside again. its only seem natural such a side project like this get less attention when other bigger games require attention.

a new character portrait for Ninja talkshow concept.

drawing and painting.. seemingly appealing DUDES isnt my kind of fun, but telling stories requre all kinds of things.
and i dont remember actually doing anything like this before, so i might as well share.

all the character illustration for first volume of ninja talkshow was done long time ago with stacy, but having a new set of character portrait seems like a good idea
especially when its a quicky.

this particular one was done in PHOTOSHOP CS, about an hour. no references

this is fairly new piece which im quite happy with.
a design of my future studio.
already some of the mess people got leased, and planing on moving in.
we also call this place SANCTUARY.
tomorrow when i wake up, im gonna crack open my piggy bank, and start building this little dreamy working space.

part of ninja talkshow: ashcan concept.
completely done freehand on PSCS. no vanishing points, grids, nor line tools to guide and visualize imaginary depth of field. hoping this picture will eventually get painted, and detailed oneday..

its been a while ive done any paintings or drawings, but i went to Phil and Miro's space monkey mansion. and got to paint somthing in limited time. painted with miro's wacom.

New perspective on perspective

this i believe, could be a key for many style oriented, talented artists. many young and upcoming artists tend to focus on a few elements in drawings, like cute face with big eyes, or big round boobs. (ohh wait.. thats me!) but there are a few things in drawing, its so technical, at first sight you get lost and just ignore there is such technicality involved and applied to most of your drawings. (if not every single ones.) technicality in PERSPECTIVE drawing, the main subject of this tutorial, is actually quite simple. afew principle and tricks can get put you on a new perspective in drawing without a doubt. my intention here is to cover than principle and tricks.
unlike life-drawings, (human figure study) perspective drawing is as simple as binary, 0 and 1. just gotta find away to depict this two bit structures.
though my english isnt the best, and i didnt even bother to proof read, but this will certainly convey the message, and i do hope you get something out of it.
this tut is made using Photoshop CS, and without any use of references.

well, some pointed out her head is too small, but also some pointed out that she has big paws so making her face look relatively small. thats correct. and i'd add that she has big.... package all around.
