This piece is part of a series I did last year for the officially licensed KoF card game. It was very recently 'spoiled' to the public and features Vice performing a variation of her 'Gorefest' drag and throw move on Daimon. Expect more art from the game as it's revealed.

The game will be available at stores within the next few months. It was an honour to work on a such an awesome franchise, many thanks to Jasco!

A super-fast punch combo (Fist of the North Star's Ken- style!).

Part of the "Vincent Grey" illustration set I drew for the "Universal Fighting System" card game. He is a character in the alt-universe sci-fi "Red Horizon" (a stylistic cross between Soul Calibur and Blazblue), an original property of Jascogames.

In this story, Grey (the M. Bison-esque bad-guy) is the president of the US but is under the influence of a supernatural evil force so rules it under a sinister dictatorship (yet believes he's doing the right thing).

UFS KoFXIII - Mature's 'Heaven's Gate'

Following the set of "Red Horizon" card game illustrations I did for Jascogames, this piece is part of a series I did last year for the officially licensed KoF card game.

It was one of the first to be 'spoiled' to the public this past week. In this image, 'Mature' hits 'King' (from the Art of Fighting) with her "Heaven's Gate" move, leaping back with a smile as her opponent gets scorched!

Springer Tribute for Transformers RG1 vol.1

I little tribute piece of one of my all-time favourite Transformers. This can be found at the the back of the TF Regeneration One Trade PaperBack Volume 1. OUT NOW AT ALL GOOD COMIC AND BOOK SHOPS!!

I was saddened to see Megatron blow Springer's head off in cold blood in the official TF continuity but, unfortunately, it was needed. It was the moment that Prime needed to realise that he must finally put an end to Megatron's tyranny.

Springer didn't have an heroic death befitting of his character and reputation but it was significant in what happened moments later... however, laying down his life for the greater good - and his fellow wreckers - was typical Springer.

I just HAD to do this piece for the book - my own personal homage to one of the greatest, most honourable and courageous Autobots (& his most famous line from the Animated Movie!), a character I've been a big fan of for decades.

"Believe it or not, that was the fun part!" Thanks Springer, my boy!

'Delta-Fae' Original Character concept

Original Character Design from forthcoming original comic "KDA" by Jason Cardy

I'm currently putting together some ideas and designs for an original story I've come up with called 'KDA', based in a ruined post-apocalyptic Britain.

Delta-Fae is one of the first characters I've designed for it and she will also appear as a character in the collectable card game OFF PANEL: Indie Comics Battleground, coming out in the UK in a few months.

This is her character description on the card -

A lone voice of truth and honour in a ruined world, Delta-Fae is a courageous vigilante and highly-skilled fencer, fighting to protect the oppressed. A mute from birth, she communicates with lights built into her face-mask. Hydraulic boots give her increased speed/leaping ability and she fights with super-heated blades using angular strikes.

Delta-Fae's mask can display simple text or icons with the grid of lights which is controlled mentally. The 'wings' of her outfit are spare blades for her thermal-swords.

Her role may end up being slightly different in the comic as I'm still working on it but I hope to start putting up some more details, characters and samples for KDA over the coming months. I hope you like her and thanks for reading!

Transformers RG1 issue 85 came out a couple of days ago, featuring the first (and LAST) proper fight Prime and Megatron have had in official G1 comics. Here's the cover -

To celebrate this monumental issue, I did the above A4 (297x210mm) mixed-media art piece at the Cardiff International Comic Expo. It's an original, one of a kind piece - I drew it straight onto both sides of the glass in the frame using markers, with graphite rendering on tracing paper underneath.

I am selling this on ebay at the moment, and it will come with a copy of the rare RG1 #80.5 introductory comic and the brand new RG1 #85 (with the cover featured above), both of which are bagged, boarded and signed by me!

Transformers ReGeneration One #85 cover

Optimus Prime versus Megatron. THE Transformers rivalry that has been told dozens of times in comics, animation and film. Unbelievably, this issue (which came out about a week ago) is the first time Prime & Megs have had a proper fight in the G1 comics and the outcome of this match will me FINAL - only one will stand... but who?

I'm the regular cover colourist on this series, with Andrew Wildman providing the awesome line-art, he absolutely nailed this issue and it's an honour to be involved with it!

Transformers ReGeneration One #80.5 cover

The first official artwork for Transformers ReGeneration One (formally know an as TF81), THE direct continuation on the old 80 issue Marvel run (from 1984-1991). TFRG1 is written by Simon Furman ([link]) and is due for launch mid-2012.

This is a stop-gap issue (hence 80.5) leading up to issue 81, the proper start of the series, and will be IDW's contribution to "Free Comic Book Day" (May 5th).

TFRG1 covers are drawn by Andrew Wildman ([link]) and coloured by me. I don't often post anything on DA that I don't draw myself these days, but this piece is quite significant- I used to read these comics as a kid (sorry to make you feel old, WildFur!) and it was an honour and privilege to be asked to colour this cover!

Old-school TF fans wanted a continuation of the old Marvel comic and IDW has obliged. I hope those who remember the old stories can't wait to see how they finally end!

A little while ago I was approached by a US company Jascogames to produce some artwork for the UFS (Ultimate Fighting System) card game. The game originally started back in 2006 and has included such franchises as Street Fighter, Darkstalkers, Tekken, Soul Calibur and King of Fighters.

This relaunch of UFS is focused around Jascogames original property "Red Horizon", which is set in a near-future alternate reality with heavy doses of science fiction and the supernatural.

The image above is one of 18 illustrations I produced of Vincent Grey, who is the main bad guy of the RH story. He is the president of the US but is under the influence of a supernatural evil force so rules it under a sinister dictatorship!

It was an honour and privilege to be involved with this property, given the reputation of UFS and the amazing quality of the other artists who have been illustrating Red Horizon -
Gonzalo Ordóñez Arias (Genzoman) (who provided nearly all of the character designs)

Terminator Tutorials

Terminator Salvation Illustration guides

This deviation takes some explaining! -->

These are illustrations I did a few months before the launch of the Terminator Salvation movie back in 2009 for the tie-in UK comicbook.

I was asked to explain the process of illustrating these things for the comic readers so I've included it here with a very rough guide to the steps.

The process below is VERY SIMPLIFIED and BASIC so you may not learn much from it but these files have been sitting on my comp for a while and I figured someone might find these useful, especially beginners to illustration or digital colouring.

1) Pose Sketch -
Start with a quick, light pencil sketch to rough out shape, form and pose of a character using lines, boxes, and ellipses.

2) Rough Anatomy -
Once you are happy with the size and shape of your character, you can start thinking about anatomy, making sure limbs and bodies are the correct proportion as you draw over your sketch. Add more boxes and cylinders if it helps to think in terms of a 3 dimensional character.

3) Developed Form -
You can now 'sculpt' into your boxes and ellipses to get more realistic and accurate looking shapes. In the case of these Terminators, I referred the concept art and production stills to see what the limbs and bodies should look like and how they work. Finding suitable reference is always good practice!

4) Detailed Lines -
You can put in as much additional detail as you like. While I had to keep them relatively simple, these Terminators called for extra details in the joints and movable parts. You can complete your drawing in pencil here or, if you're confident, do the finer details when you ink with a pen/s.

5) Inks & Shadows -
You can trace over your drawing with black ink on a clean sheet of paper (if you can see through it) or, if you want to work on the same page, use a soft eraser to take out your pencil lines after the ink is dry. Alternatively, you even just scan it in and darken the lines digitally.

For these illustrations I wanted to decided to use hard black shapes for the shadow areas to simplify the characters, emphasise and make them more crisp. I decided where my light source would be and how it would effect the figure in 3D.

The drawing is now ready to scanned for digital colouring (or even coloured by hand, if you wish!). Scanning artwork at 300 DPI should give you a high enough quality image for colouring in detail.

6) Colour Flats -
We now need to lay down the basic colours for the character. By creating a layer of 'flats' (individual flat areas of colour) we will be able to select a part/s of the character to shade with a brush without the brush render 'flooding' out of the selected area.

Here is simple way of doing this- In Photoshop, copy your illustration layer then switch to 'Multiply' in layer effects. This makes the white parts of the illustration transparent so you can colour underneath it.

Delete the bottom layer then separate the key parts of the illustrations (with the pencil or selection tools) with different colours on a new layer underneath your drawing.

If you make your colour edges hard (not blended using an anti-aliased tool or brush) it will make rendering easier since you can select each coloured part can be selected with no fuzzy edges.

7) Renders & FX -
Create a new layer, again set to 'multiply' (for your shadows) and another set to 'screen' (for your highlights). Using the magic wand tool pick one or more coloured areas from your 'flats' layer and brush in some shadows and highlights on the appropriate layers you just made.

Keep brushing or add layers until you are happy with how the character is rendered. Don't forget to save your image as a layered PSD or TIF so that you can make adjustments in future. Otherwise Image Menu > Flatten Image to complete the illustration!

TF Beast Wars Con Print

Gary Chalk and Scott McNeil, the voices of Optimus Primal & Dinobot in Transformers Beast Wars, were guests of honour at the show, so I thought I'd have a go at drawing their characters.

Transformers UK2.10 Cover

This is the cover of issue 2.10 of the UK Transformers comic. The numbering system restarted after Revenge of the Fallen came out so it's issue 10 of series 2.

The cover required Optimus Prime to be breaking out of chains, King-Kong style, and I thought making them electrified would make it a bit more interesting!

I quite like drawing movie Prime but like to make him a tad bulkier with a touch of G1 in the head design.

If there are any Tecmo Koei fans coming you may like to know that I'll be sketching characters from Tecmo Koei games (and well as other things!) to raise money for the charity. 100% of the donations will go to care and education of underprivileged kids in developing countries.

Auto Assembly 2009 Convention Artwork

I was asked to do some movie Bumblebee artwork for this year's Auto Assembly (Europe's biggest Transformers con) back in August. This illustration of Bee appeared on the cover of the Cybertronian Times (the con magazine), mugs and other stuff although the original pic was just Bee on his own (I slung a background in there to make it look more interesting).

It was also the cover image for a CD by the band 'Next of Kin'. sold at the show. They were guests at AA and played various songs from the TF animated movie among others and totally rocked the place. Singing 'the Touch' with these guys (along with Simon Williams, Nick Roche, Liam Shaloo, Kris Karter and a host of other bods) was an experience I won't forget in a hurry! O.o

I enjoyed doing this piece, hope you guys like it too!

Darkstalkers Tribute

"Under the Spell of Marionette"

This is my entry to 's Darkstalkers Tribute Book (see more details here and it's on Amazon here). It features Huitzil, the Aztec mecha, under the command of an aggressive, and slightly crazy-looking, Marionette (a secret bonus character in DS3).

I wanted to produce a piece that didn't feature one of the main cast from DS (I figured Udon would have been inundated with hundreds of entries for those) and was intrigued by Marionette. Although she doesn't have any moves of her own (in fact she has ONE sprite with NO animation!!!) she takes over the body of another character (or, to be more precise, a replica of the character she's fighting..!).

Finding no official art of the character, I thought it would be fun to bring her to life and, since I had just drawn some Transformers covers at the time, Huitzil seemed a natural choice as the character she would be controlling. I suppose I also wanted to echo the Bumblebee & Michaela pic I had done earlier...

This drawing isn't really accurate as to what happens in the game, more like a concept piece, but I thought it would make for a good image. (Hey, if I get some spare time in the future, and feel inspired, I may do a couple more pieces of Marionette taking control of other characters -but who...?).

Amazingly, this was the only instance of Marionette that appears in the entire book so I'm kinda glad I picked her otherwise she would've missed out on the party!

I can honestly say that it's a great honour to be part of this book, sharing it's pages with so many awesome artists from around the world (including some very big names such as Adam Hughes, J.Scott Campbell, Yasuhiro Nightow, Mark Brooks and Sean Galloway), and there are some astounding and beautiful images to be found here. If you love Darkstalkers / Capcom, and if you love art then this book is for you!

I'm also very happy to contribute something to the Darkstalkers universe, so thanks again to the kind folk at Udon for picking my entry and to everyone who supported the book!

TF RotF-style Grimlock Concept

For a number of years I've guested at Auto Assembly (Europe's largest Transformers convention) with a host of comicbook artists, writers and voice actors who have worked on TF over the past 25 years. This year, Gregg Berger, the voice of Grimlock in the G1 Transformers cartoon, attended the show and I thought it would be a good opportunity to do a Grimlock piece since I've never drawn him!

I thought I'd have a shot at re-designing him to fit with the movie characters, and this is how I'd like him to look. I wanted to get a design of his robot mode done for the con but ran out of time, maybe I'll do it in the future if I get a slot in the schedule!

A big thank you to the fans who liked this piece! I took a load of prints of it to the show and sold every single one of them! Cheers, guys!

Here's to Grimlock in TF3!!! (and hope he looks like a T-Rex!)

Transformers UK22 Cover

Transformers 2 : RotF opens in the UK today (Friday, June 19th) so I thought I'd celebrate by posting another TF cover I drew / coloured a few of months ago.

This is part of the Transformers UK comic continuity and Starcream's been calling the shots in Megatron's absence (after the first movie). Here, he leads an airborne assault on Prime with Dreadwing and Thundercracker.

I'd never drawn a plane before this so I had to get quite familiar with my Raptors and MIGs! I'm happy with the viewpoint on this one, went for something a bit different than most of the TF:UK covers.

Again, tried to achieve a glossy 'Movie Transformers as high-budget anime' look, hope you guys like it!

Unfortunately, looks like IDW have stopped their 'Saga of the Allspark' series so it looks unlikely this will be printed in the US now, just the UK.

Thanks for taking a look! I'm off to watch TF2! Here's hoping it rocks!

My first FULLY ORIGINATED cover!

Late last year I was priviliged to be given the opportunity to draw my first cover for Transformers UK after they liked my vision of 'Movie-Transformers-as-high-budget-Anime' as seen in my Mikaela & Bumblebee pic [link] .

I had been colouring strips and covers for them since issue 6 but producing the line work as well was a whole new challenge! The main problem I encountered was knowing when to stop moving things around! When I'm colouring someone else's work the art is fixed and there's only so much you can do!

This issue is on UK Newsstands now (but not for much longer) and I hope it will be reprinted in the U.S. in IDW's 'Saga of the Allspark' series at some point later in the year. I'm happy to say that Titan liked this enough to ask me to draw the next issue's cover and I'll be uploading that next month!

Just to explain what's going on here, in UK continuity, Jazz has been rebuilt by Ratchet (without Prime's knowledge) but a tainted fragment of the Allspark was used in his resurrection. Now Jazz is a bit off the rails and after Prime's head!
To sell.
On ebay.
Probably.

Anyways, I hope you guys like it! I'm planning to draw a lot more this year now that I'm getting the taste for it again!

This is my forth entry for 's Fighting League, a just-for-the-fun-of-it tournament that deviantartist's original characters against each other. I colour a lot of comics as a profession but don't get to draw much so I figured it could be good practice!

This is by OC, RGB [link] up against my forth allocated opponent 's chara Ragdoll.

Loura's got a wicked, clean art style but her chara Ragdoll is just MEAN. She's been dismembering and slicing up nearly every opponent she's fought in this tournament so RGB (not normally the ultraviolent type) thought she'd teach her a lesson! (Don't worry people, it's not that gruesome! Ragdoll's an entity taking control of a doll, hence the stuffing everywhere!)

Baxtar's wearing RGB's hat continuing a theme 's had in his fights, whereby his OC, Bounce, stole her hat and it's passed to various characters from one fight to the next and Baxtar was the last to have it.

Colours- Frankenstein GN cover

This is the official coloured cover to the Frankenstein graphic novel that and I spent the last half a year colouring. The lovely churoscuro inks belong to top Irish geezer Declan Shalvey who did a consistently excellent job illustrating this book.

Colour-wise, we decided to go for lots of big washes, filters and textures to give it a dark & moody atmosphere and I'm really hoping the pages will come out nicely in print!

It's due out in at the end of September and can be pre-ordered at Amazon UK. We're looking forward to the launch of this one at the Birmingham Comic Expo!

BTW. Lens flares are NOT big OR clever and very '90s. Unfortunately, I was requested to do this by the Editor... I wasn't going to use a filter though, hell no! Home-made lens-flares are slightly less offensive...

Optimus Prime portrait Sketch

This is a quick, photoshop line sketch of TF Movie Optimus Prime. Another piece that I took to Auto Assemble 08, I've officially coloured a lot of Prime recently and wanted to find out what he's like to draw!

As I've said in the other posts, this year is the 3rd time I've guested at Auto Assembly, Europe's largest Transformers convention, which took place at the beginning of August (08). I took this opportunity to produce some new artwork for the con and this is the 1st of 3 pieces. I colour a lot of the UK TF comic strips so to actually draw them was a step out of my comfort zone!

It was quite a challenge to do these pieces, I haven't drawn a Transformer for well over 15 years (since my early teens) but I don't think they've come out too badly!

Megatron portrait sketch

This is a rough, 'churoscuro'-style photoshop sketch of TF Movie Megatron. Another piece that I took to Auto Assemble 08, the first time I've drawn anything in this style and I quite like working so loose (mistakes become part of it!).

Mikaela and Bumblebee

EDIT : Bumblebee got an upgrade in Revenge of the Fallen so I thought I'd give him an upgrade here too! I've changed his chest to look more like the 2009 Camaro and now matches the Bumblebee pic I did for the Auto Assembly convention magazine / merchandise. I hope I've improved it!!

A lot of the strips I've worked on lately have paired up Mikaela & Bumblebee (sorry Sam Witwicky, Simon Furman has been neglecting you in the UK comics!) so I wanted to create a piece featuring the two.

I usually colour TF UK strips in an anime-esque cel style and my intention with this pic was 'what if the TF Movie designs were in an anime?' and this is what I came up with!

I had to draw Bumblebee in his battle mask because I noticed that when BB used it in the movie 2 little 'horns' appeared on top of his head like his original Gen1 design! I thought that was a nice touch from the movie TF designers.

Spectacular Spiderman UK 170

Cover/Poster for issue 170 of the ongoing British Spiderman comic.

I saw this on the shelves the other day but the issue was bagged with so much stuff in it you can't actually see the cover! If the inclusion of the Hulk in the story was to increase sales with the release of the Hulk movie, I'm not sure it's going to work if the cover's almost completely hidden!

For those interested, here's what it looks like without the obligatory freebies and supplementary junk!

Wow, I've drawn TWO pics in TWO weeks! It's becoming a nasty habit!

I did this as a present for the lovely , who keeps me sane inside and outside of work, as a kind of anniversary-valentines-celebration-type thing.

This is my take on her "Dreamwolf" character which is a vision of Kat as a superhero as originally designed by the talented
(as shown here).

It's a bit messy, but once again I drew it straight into Photoshop coz paper scares me (and I don't have a scanner).

EDIT : I've altered some of the background/abilities text so it reads better and, er, corrected some spelling errors (Photoshop needs a spellchecker... or I need to proof read more!)

This is my first original character since school (that's close to 15 years ago people! lol)
I'm submitting this to *AngelCrusher's Warm up Jam this month (and if I've got time, I'd like to also enter her into the fighting league next month!)
This is just a nice break from professional work for me, because I don't get much of an option to draw these days.
I'm quite happy with the way that the character came out at the end, and the concepts and ideas around her, she's the strong silent type, who takes no pleasure in kicking the snot out of the bad guys... but she's just so damn good at it!

NOTE : I've used the ENGLISH spelling of the word 'colour' (not 'color' ) because, well, I'm British.

Uh oh, she's missed the head shot and is gonna get clocked by Chun's left peg! That's what's supposed to going on anyways.

This was my entry to the Udon Street Fighter Tribute contest (#UdonCrew).

The winners are to be featured in their upcoming book but, alas, it didn't make the grade. However only 163 were chosen from over 1300 so the odds were quite remote! Unfortunately, my Frankenstein deadlines meant I had to work through an entire night to get this in on time!

I'm attempting to get all the deviantart entries that Udon didn't choose collected in one place so, if you've done one, please drop me a note at ~streetfightertribute and I'll stick your entry in the favs gallery!

This pic was the last ever Actionman ATOM poster featured in the last issue of the Actionman ATOM UK comic, which had a VERY limited print run. This poster was a rare thing indeed! ^-^
